Which is why Melbourne's bike-share will fail.

Among all the countries that have bike share (and are very successful with the program), Melb is the only one that requires a helmet (which is why it is failing so badly).

      • I grabbed one a few weeks ago when I was trying to find an open takeaway restaurant whilst staying in the CBD. I didn't care about the lack of helmet, and I'm guessing overseas visitors wouldn't even know about our helmet laws.

It might fail, however, because it's technically difficult to even hire the bike. I'm a very tech savvy 34 year old male who's always setting up computers and hi-fi systems for family members, and I struggled with the hiring instructions. I paid via credit card, then had to dig quite deep with 2 fingers into the chute where the receipt was ejected, to get the receipt with the 4 digit code. It took me a few attempts to work out how to input this code into the system.

I can't for the life of me understand why the designers didn't make it so once a user has paid, a bike automatically becomes unlocked.

        • That's because you are using a daily/weekly, short term loan.
I think they expected most people to pay $50 for a yearly and they will send you a key.
For yearly, there isn't a need for receipts and codes, you just slot in the key and the bike gets unlocked.

Hey, I say, have you tried one of those ultra-stylish foldable bike helmets that fits in your handbag?

Yes, I thought you would say that.

I was wondering why 8 out of 10 bikes were missing out of the rack at Flagstaff gardens today - this must be the reason. Have only ever seen one or 2 bikes gone.

    • +3

Nah, it's not cos of that.
Basically, the bike company has to ensure that at every bike station, the racks are half filled, and half empty, so that ppl can borrow and return.

The company has a fleet of trucks which basically remove bikes from places that are FULL, and dump them at places that are empty.

They should just give people a lift around the city on the trucks then! It would be better for the environment and cheaper ;-)
