Buying a Second-Hand Car for Wife - Recommendations under $6500

Hi All,

I am trying to find a second-hand car for my wife and wanted some recommendations:(Qld, Brisbane)

  1. Should I go for Toyota Ascent 1.8 auto or Mazda 2 auto, Suzuki Swift 1.5L auto (note at minimum need 1.5L engine)
I have seen the reviews mostly you have to pay more for toyotas but they last long, Mazda 2 has been one of the good ones apperently, suzuki swift was voted best in this range (toyota excluded)

  2. My budget is around $6500 and I am after car with less than 150k

  3. Can I also get a list of things which I should be aware of while checking for a used car.
I know the usual accidents, log book servicing, insurance claims, kms. any other which I have missed

  4. What is the norm for negotiating with private seller or dealer.

Any other things which I should consider

  • The Corolla is in a different class to the mazda 2 and swift.

For around that price if you're after a sedan rather than a hatch i would also be looking at Nissan Pulsar and Mitsubish Lancer.

Also may be worth considering the Honda Jazz. I believe they have a 1.5L version out there. It's actually quite good at lugging around large items when you fold the backseats down.

    • Thanks was looking at Jazz but they seem to have a regular issue of CTV

I would go the corolla. My father in law bought one recently with 10,000km on the clock and got it for 14k - it's bland but it gets the job done. As with any secondhand car purchase, always exercise caution - do the appropriate checks, tests before putting any deposit down.

Toyotas are notoriously long living. I've had a few and they just keep running. Plus parts and service should be cheap due to their popularity.

  • note at minimum need 1.5L engine

Is there a specific reason for 1.5L minimum? some smaller engines are more powerful like the 1.2 ltr VW.

more kw, but have to work harder during it's lifetime.

      • Not sure what you mean by "work harder during it's lifetime".
Do you mean to say the turbo has a higher failure rate?
Usually forced induction helps in achieving higher torque at lower RPM.

    Toyota

you can't go wrong with a toyota.

    1. Which one do you like most? All have good reputation.

    2. Search carsales up to $6500k and 150k km.

    3. It's been asked before and there are plenty of reputable web pages giving you a list of things to look for

    4. The norm for negotiating is for you to offer lower than they advertise, then negotiate until you are both happy, or you walk away. Don't start too low, it is insulting for both of you. Know how much the model you are looking at is going for and make an offer they might accept.

You should consider reading all the other threads about buying a cheap car.
