Car dealers posing as private sellers on CarSales.com.au

I've contacted a few sellers from carsales.com and when I have spoken to them they seem to actually be a car yard dealer. Seems a tad dodgy to me especially when you don't get the warranties of buying it through the card yard. Anyone else had this experience? Are car yard dealers allowed to do that?

Wouldn't worry too much about it. The car is still the car and you should do the same due diligence checks on the car whether its second hand privately or from a dealer.

  • I think not. A guy at work had bought an sold a few cars after fixing them up. He went to RMS and they told him if he kept doing it he'd have to get a dealer licence.

I' sure ther are ways around it though. Just because it is advertised as privately doesn't mean it's not going through a dealer. The dealer probably gets the ad cheaper or something.

    • Ah right. It's not just car yard dealers that need dealer licenses?

The trick when ringing them is to say "I'm calling about the car you have for sale", don't mention the make or model. If they say "which one" you can be sure its a dealer.

That's why they pay JIMB0 the big bucks ;)

    • Had a guy msg me about an I was selling on Gumtree. Had to ask which one. The bike. Which bike? Black one. Which black one?

      I'm not a dealer.

Do they actually go to the lengths of taking photos in a street/private driveway instead of in the car yard? Pretty sneaky!

Wow it reminds me of my first car purchase experience long time ago. Got this old model Ford from a car dealer, when I asked for the engine number to check history, the dealer told me 'look bro, I'm a car dealer, not private seller, we never sell cars with problems'. Well, that's my first car purchase, hence I trusted him and paid the $3.5k. After driving it for 6 months, the car started to show all sorts of major issues. I had it checked by a mechanic and was told it was a scrapped car and only worth $200 something. When I took the car back to the dealer he told me that was my problem. The car dealer is in Punchbowl btw.

I think it's likely the cars have been assigned to various sale staff as the first point of contact. Like those property posters giving a particular real estate agent to ring. As long as you are buying from the car yard, your statutory protections are unaffected. You'd have to do the same due diligence anyway.
