which booking agent would you recommend is best?

    • Id like to know too. Ive always booked direct with airlines in the past, never heard of any of these agencies.

    • I booked direct on the JAL website, and the price is only $10 extra. I'd book direct =)

      • Hrmm, if you fly direct from Mel then it definietely seems so. If I book from Canberra then it is $1000 extra per person. dang

      • Yeah I thought that would be the case :)

Great deal, but be warned Cherry Blossom Season is only late March to mid/late April. Don't pick random dates from the list and expect blossom.

  • +1

Japan airlines just started flying direct from melb to tokyo from $695

  • Good price during Christmas!

For those interested, these dates coincide with the Tokyo Game Show. I've never been but heard that its amazing.

    • Awesome! Any more details or website around this?

      • One of the largest Video Game shows in the world, September 21-24, though I think the first 2 days are press only days.

I usually go to E3 every year but can't make it this year unfortunately, so thinking of attending this instead.

        http://eventr.jp/en/events/tokyo-game-show/

  • Good

  • Great to see Japan Airlines arrive in Melbourne. Now Melbourites have two options per day to Tokyo. A day time departure with Qantas or a night time one with Japan Airlines. Only bummer is both these flights fly into Narita which is a long way from the city centre (some 60km)

Only just got back from my first time in Tokyo after the Jetstar deal. I want to go back every year!

    • +1

Same here! might try a different airline though… Jetstar flights were quite uncomfortable although you pay for what you get lol

    • It is a lovely country!

    • I'm in japan now from that jetstar deal. Fair warning to anyone else they didn't give me my reserved seats with extra leg room. Support gave some bull shit line about operational requirements and refused to refund..

      • If they can't supply what you paid for surely they have to refund you the upgrade fee. I would be pushing it further when you return to Australia.

  • The flights from brisbane have stopovers in melbourne! I'll rather pay the extra to avoid that stopover.

    • jetstar from GC. I paid $350 for my ticket.

I'd rather pay less to avoid a stop over in Melbourne

  • I usually fly Cathay Pacific after spending a few days in Hong Kong. Always wanted to Fly Japan Airlines! Prices from Melb are a bargain

  • awesome!!!

  • Looks like a great deal, hopefully it is an annual thing :D

  • Thank you sir/mam - 25 Dec To 7 Jan was $927 ex ADL.

  • +2

All this travel deals makes me want to travel on an almost monthly basis. A week here, another weekend there.

  • Nice deal

  • +3

This is a good deal! Especially for Easter 2018!

Advice: You can book a Japan Airlines flight through the AMEX travel website.

I ended up paying just $590 for two people using the $400 credit that I had with the Amex Explorer (+ the additional $400 that my partner had too).
    Thanks

    • Awesome tip! Booked!

  • The Perth-Tokyo flights have a stopover in…..wait for it…..Melbourne!!

If Thai Airways is the same price, give me that option every single time. Stay one night in Bangkok (makes a hard man humble).

Sydney prices are a ripoff! Even they are for direct flights to Tokyo but $147 more than direct flights from Melbourne. I am sure the price difference is not due to high Sydney Airport levies and charges.

    • Supply and demand, my friend.

    • +1

This is a promo from Melbourne. JAL are starting the direct MEL-NRT service from September this year, its an introductory price. The Sydney to Tokyo service has been running for years.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Just booked! March 28-April 15 from Melbourne. Taking my parents on their first trip to Japan! Came just under $2100 in total, pretty good deal =)

    • +1

that's the best time to visit Japan as well. Well done.

      • Most expensive for hotel though

  • +1

Thanks OP! Any idea when the promo ends?

  • Cheap as!

I was hoping there would be a one-way equivalent (or a return flight a long time in advance), as I'm considering doing a working holiday in Japan - alas, no luck. Will have to keep an eye out for a decent price on a full-service airline.

If you're in a position to get these fares for Cherry Blossom season 2018 however, I can't recommend this enough! Cheers OP

  • Great deal, finally some decent prices for December! Now time to persuade the family :)

  • See you all in Japan ozbargainers!
I flew JAL last year, great airline.

  • Thanks OP! Booked and ready to go. Second time going to Japan, still as excited as the first time I went!

  • Is it worth it to fly domestic down to Melbourne from Sydney just to take advantage of this deal?

    • How much is it from Sydney?

      • $100+ return at least for the domestic flight so it can reach the same price as just flying JAL return from Sydney…unless we follow chl15's idea to use free flights =\

    • I am :)
Using anz reward free flight to head down there :)

  • If we wanted to visit Tokyo for a week with a 13 month old, would we want to bring along a stroller? Or somehow hire/buy a stroller in Tokyo? If so, what kind of stroller?

    • I would bring a stroller and a baby carrier. The stroller may need to be folded up on the subway during peak times. However, if you travel outside of rush hour, there's usually quite a bit of space. Plus there are designated carriages for strollers/wheelchairs. All the subway stations that we went to had elevators.

For easy manoeuvrability, the Steelcraft Holiday stroller is great. Plus it has a full recline for comfy naps. Weighs around 7kg and is quick and easy to fold up. Goes on sale at Big W for around $85 from time to time, so you won't be too sad if/when it gets trashed by the baggage handlers. If cost is not an issue, there are really small travel strollers such as the Mountain Buggy Nano, Babyzen Yoyo or GB Qbit. You won't be able to fit your stroller in most ramen/sushi train style restaurants, which is where the baby carrier will come in handy. We used our double stroller all over Tokyo, and found the footpaths to be very navigable.

      • Thanks undercut for the detailed response. I'll look into the Steelcraft Holiday.

By the way, what are your thoughts on the gb Pockit for $199 (Baby Bunting), for Japan? The gb QBit is $249 as well so it's not too much more, but less compact and not carry on.

        • The GB Pockit is really small and portable, but it won't be as comfortable for your child (no recline, very little padding, no suspension, tiny sunshade). It's also shorter in height, so may not be enjoyable to push if you or your partner are tall. In other words, it will be fine for short trips, but not so suitable for your little one to nap in or to go for long walks.

For $50 more, I'd go for the Qbit+. It can be handy to check your stroller onto the flight, but a baby carrier will work just as well at the airport.

Just booked to see cherry blossoms over Easter in Tokyo. Thank you OP, just under $700 for this is acceptable to me :) Dreamliner, 2 pieces of luggage, JAL, DIRECT from Mel, cherry blossoms, and Easter made me pull the trigger!!

  • +3

Just read the media release from JAL.

2-4-2 configuration in economy, roomier seats compared to the 3-3-3 configuration of other airlines.

In flight wifi available at a cost.
    1 hour US$10.15
    3 hour US$14.40
    Full Flight US$18.80

Here's the kicker to help you get prepared for Japan..
Warm-water Toto Washlet will be equipped in the lavatories in all classes.
An electronic toilet seat featuring a water-jet function for washing, jointly developed by TOTO LTD, JAMCO Corporation and the Boeing Company.

Better hope they don't run out of water and paper at the same time!

Has anybody else noticed that all the flights from cities other than Melbourne have overnight stops in MEL on the return?

    • +1

I noticed that too. Also, the flights from Narita leave in the morning so it would be an early start getting from Tokyo to the airport. Not difficult, but if you have kids I would factor that in.

  • Of all the flights to Japan, they have the best economy class in my opinion!
    https://www.jal.co.jp/en/inter/service/economy/seat/skywider…

  • does this include seat fares and checked luggage?

  • Very tempted but accommodation in Tokyo sure seems expensive! Any recommendations?

    • Airbnb have a heap of affordable options. All our accommodation was booked through it when we traveled in October last year. All places were clean and the hosts were helpful. We had two bedroom apartments for about $130 a night.

  • When does the sale end?

    • +1

The nonstop service between Melbourne and Tokyo starts from September 2, 2017 with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

It might be a normal price for Melbourne to Tokyo from now on? Not sure tho.

      Edit: I'm wrong:

      Special Fares
In celebration of JAL’s inaugural flight, special fares for flights to Tokyo for Business / Premium
Economy and Economy Class are available until July 31.

    • +1

Don't wait too long, my exact flight is now over $800 and I booked it for under $700 :)

      • ^ This. Prices seem to be on the rise the longer you wait.

  • Booked Dec 23-Jan 7 - certainly wasn't $659, but managed to get mel-tokyo, tokyo-hiroshima, osaka-tokyo, tokyo-mel using tokyo as stopovers on a multi-stop booking. didn't increase the overall price of the ticket, so it's like the internal flights were free!
