I Want to Build a Fence

What's the go to place in Melbourne for fencing supplies?

Neighbour wants to replace the side fence and I'm looking at how much materials cost so I can gauge if it's worth doing it myself. It's an access side fence so we barely notice it. Thinking of possibly a colorbond fence, or a colorbond clone, but its also worth knowing what the cheapest timber paling fence would cost.

What's the go to place in Melbourne for fencing supplies? I'll have to get it delivered so store location is not important.

You're probably wasting your time doing the research. If it was your own fence, sure. Since it is a shared fence you would also need to get their approval.

I know I wouldn't accept a neighbour's offer to do it purely to save some money, I would want it done professionally. The fence should be there for years to come, I wouldn't know if you'd done a lasting job and you could sell the house in a years time and I would have no recourse if it came down after you left. A tradesman normally warrants it for 5+ years and I think colorbond is usually longer (I may be wrong on that).

I'm guessing that will happen. Well actually I'm pretty much certain of it as she told me so, but I still like to have as much information as I can before dropping a grand down. If nothing else it allows me to feel like I know what I'm doing.

For the record I think your reasoning is faulty, but it does seem to be the prevailing opinion

Also I can't go past without throwing this in

You're probably wasting your time doing the research

Thats impossible, because my time is worthless!

  • if it's worth doing it myself.

are you fit with reasonable upper body strength? do you suffer from any back problems? do you have the tools to dig fence posts or do you need to borrow/hire? have you worked with cement before? how about string line and spirit level? how much are you hoping to save and how much is your free time worth compared to your work?

    • Lot of questions there Chief. Some of them seem a bit premature but I'll indulge

      Yes
      No
      Yes got tools
      Yes
      A little
      Anything over $25/hour is fine

I just rebuilt a section of our fence. Think it cost about $900 for 7 colourbond panels, some treated pine sleepers, concrete, jackhammer hire etc. installed quotes were around $3k. it was hard work, but worth it knowing there were no shortcuts taken like was the case with another fence I repaired a while back. If you can get your neighbour to help then even better. My neighbour confessed that he hires a handyman to hang a picture so he was no help.

    • Nice saving. Where did you buy the parts from?

    • Unless you live somewhere remote, it's hard to understand why the installed quotes were that high.

      • No access for machine, so all hand work didn't help. Not quotes as such, more guesstimates which probably included a surcharge for not wanting to do it.

Got my materials from a local fence supplier (not Melbourne). Two suppliers were similar prices.

    Dont forget tip fees
    Replaced a short fence recently 12 fence posts/concrete was 1.3 tonne $220

Advice. Unless you have one other person helping that's replaced a fence before high chance it won't be straight ;)

I managed to bust up a bit of the concrete and feed some into the weekly bin. Been doing that for our renos, little bit in each week while I can stand it, then save the tip run for when I get a lot.

When I took the old colourbond fence to the tip I had it in the trailer a bit sorted, most of the metal was on top. The tip guy said to take all the metal off for recycling then go and re-weigh and then go and tip the rest off. it dropped my tip fees by half.

  • I wouldn't bother with the timber fence, they deteriorate to fast.
