Coles Woolworths Thai Indian Food Recommendations

Has anybody found any good or can recommend any Coles, Woolies or Aldi products that are any good in the Indian or Thai cuisine range.

I ask because I have tried some of the simmer sauce jars and pastes and even with my own adjustments I can't get them anywhere near restaurant food quality.

So has anybody had any luck with their purchases or know any maybe good hidden gems.

Cheers thanks

A restaurant won't use a simmer sauce from the supermarket.
They may also employ someone with better cooking skills than you.

    • :( gifs did buying for my good cravings haha lol :(

with a tiny bit of tweaking, they are absolutely delicious !!!

and i have nothing to do with the company, just a fan of decent curries

Just checked out this place, they are literally a 5 minute drive from my house and I didn't know they existed! Might give em a go

      • bloody oath !!

my favourite is the tandoori - overnight marinade for a dry curry (like skewers on bbq) or quick marinade with yogurt then into pan for a wet curry

  • Many restaurants may use 20, 30+ ingredients in their sauces. Also food made in a commercial kitchen is different to a home kitchen.

  • the pre made indian ones from woolies are ok, their not frozen their in the fridge part just don't get the Nan bread better go to an indian restaurant for them.

  • Thai curry pastes are okay. Flesh out with coconut cream.

  • Personally i think the indian pre made quality has dropped off a lot (especially once they house branded them at Coles and Woolies - a race to the bottom). They are all a but dull now. Im back to getting it from a restaurant for the odd Friday takeaway.

Please elaborate.. the main reason I say coles and Woolworths is because ask the great asian grocery stores are like an hours train ride away.

      • Just mix some spices together - cumin, coriander, fennel seeds, ginger etc. idk

Lol haha what idk? Lol thanks

  • I'm a big fan of passage to India sauces, vindaloo and balti in particular. Pity they discontinued Madras though.

Anyone recommend a good Madras sauce you can buy? Tried sharwoods and it isn't great

    • get one of your new local pastes ! and add some chilli powder for a bit of a kick

Honestly, your local Asian grocery store will be a. cheaper, b. better tasting. Don't be afraid to ask the store people how they make their curries (and what ingredients they recommend), you'll be surprised at how much you can find out.

    • Wish there was one near me.. An in the blue mountains so pickings are slimming.

The Spice Tailor range is pretty good and authentic = https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/everything/search/fieā€¦

  • My Mother used a certain curry paste in a sachet from IGA but when I tried to cook with the same one it turned out way worse haha.

    • Haha sounds like my same problem.. tried cooking with same ingredients as my grandmother.. no dice.. turned out really bad really terrible
