Warranty Replacement iPhone - Screen Protector Replacement?

Hi all,

I'm gettting my iPhone replaced under warranty tomorrow (already had it assessed and approved).

I currently have a $45 screen protector on the phone that I bought from the Apple Store. It's my opinion that I shouldn't have to pay for another since this is their hardware fault - has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks

  • buy one from aliexpress for $5

    • buy 5 for that price

  • You could ask their customer service guy to see if they can throw one in for free.

Screen protectors are also very cheap, can buy one for under $4 on eBay.

In reply to the above; I work with phones and I know there are cheap protectors out there. This one is the Tech21 Impact Shield with Anti Glare which is superior to the trash on AliEx (not ten times superior as per the price, but superior to an acceptable degree that the price is justifiable).

    • "trash on AliEx"? My $2 Glass screen protector once saved my phone.

And you know it saved your phone how?

I love people that buy tempered glass screen protectors because they seem to have this belief that when the protector breaks it means it saved their phone. Unfortunately, common sense reveals that a thin piece of glass requires far less force to break than a thicker glass designed for crack protection.

It's the biggest rip off in the accessories market but it makes me money so I don't complain when people insist on it.

How thick is your $45 screen protector?

          @BrodenIt:

Damage protection involves decreasing the force of deceleration. Thickness matters not when the materials absorb shock (which is a roundabout way of saying they increase the stopping time/decrease the rate of deceleration).

          Force = Mass x Acceleraton

Decrease acceleration (deceleration is simply acceleration in an opposite direction) and you'll decrease force. The lower the force, the better.

The protector I buy contains polymers that assist with this - glass does not. It attempts to increase stopping time by putting something fragile and incapable of handling high force in the way of the device's glass - nothing more.

  • Had a glass one on for a good guys warranty claim, they gave me fee plastic ones to replace it

    • Did they stock the glass one that you initially had? Just wondering if that plastic one is the default replacement for items they don't stock, or if it's all they'll do.

      • Nah they didnt
Gave me the closest they could which were Samsung branded ones

  • Take it off and apply on replacement

    • Adhesive won't be as effective, not to mention the probability of not getting any dust caught on it is effectively nil.

        That's pretty much tough tts

      • If you get dust, wash it off under tap. Then stick it back on. Have done it, and was perfect once reapplied.

Ask nicely, expect nothing, thank anyway.

  • took my wifes i7 in a few weeks back with a dud silent switch.
she had a cracked screen protector (bought on ebay) which the assistant happily replaced with a new Belkin one along with the new phone.
They even have this cool tool to fix the protector on the screen for you.
This is why im happy to pay a little extra for Apple products. Second to none when it comes to customer service.

That's good to hear. I might press them to see if that's somewhat of a policy, but I imagine it was a "one off" done for you.

  • Just ask them for a replacement. I mentioned it when I got my replacement phone for a warranty fault at the Apple Store and they gave me a new one no questions asked.

  • It used to be that if you actually bought the protector from the Apple Store (like you say) that they would replace it if a warranty repair occurred, like for like. Imagine that rule hasn't changed. Just ask them.

Thanks to everyone that has commented here.

As for the downvotes on my negative comments towards glass screen protectors, its basic physics as to why they're a rip off. Granted, sub $5 options are not too bad, but anything from a store front is terrible value based on misconceptions (to be fair, these are easy to make). Feel free to keep downvoting the comment but I'm trying to do people a favour.

I thought you were here to ask people for help not trying to do us a favour.

I asked for help and returned the favour by correcting misconceptions. If you took issue with this, then that's your call; likewise if you had a problem with any perceived tone of mine.

However, you don't get to pick and choose the laws of physics; what I said is factual. You can have your own opinions but you can't have your own facts, I'm afraid.

i have a 24c glass screen protector on my iphone 7+.
i purchased 100 of them for 24 bucks from aliexpress, i replace them twice a month coz i end up chipping or cracking the protector.
if you were in sydney id give you five for free.

    • OP is paying $44 for the screen protector brand. Apple get their screen protectors made overseas cheaply and rebranded.

      • tech21 are not an Apple brand; your agenda is showing

    • That's a smart way to go about it. Seeing glass protectors being flogged for upwards of $40 in some stores makes me feel ill. And thank you for your offer.

      • welcome :)

  • My daughter's new iphone 7+ has cracked on the side twice (she purchased in Jan 17) and each time Apple replaced it she asked for the same $45 Belkin screen protector and got it without an argument

    Update:

They no longer stocked the identical product, but were happy to provide a free Belkin protector "valued" at $24.95 which I was happy with for the time being whilst I seek a better alternative. Keep in mind that I forgot to bring my receipt yet they went ahead with the free replacement anyway.
