Android 2.2 vs iOS 4.1

I’ve spent some time reading about both the Android 2.2 (Froyo) and the iOS 4.1 update recently. Although it’s a pretty close race, looking at a side-by-side comparison of the two leads me to believe that Android is actually winning by a nose.

One of the main problems that were holding the older versions of Android back was their issues with speed. This problem has now been solved with changes that give the OS a 2x to 5x times performance boost which is epic, and there are even rumors that Google is just being modest and that the speed boost is more like 4x-5x. Can’t understand why people are still freaking out about the iPhone 4?

  • Probably because 2.2 isn't officially available on most devices.
I have a Galaxy S still running stock Samsung Firmware (2.1). I've thought about flashing it, but figured I'd wait for the official 2.2 firmware to come out before doing so.
For most people, they aren't even aware that there are different versions. If the device works, it works.. iPhone has the added bonus of millions of peripherals designed specifically for it including peripherals bought for all previous generations.. Peripherals can be a lock-in as much as the old Fairplay DRM'd music from iTMS was/is.

    • Can you still flash it once you get ota froyo?

      • That would depends on whether the ota froyo is rooted. In a normal scenario, its more advisable to flash with clean versions of ota froyo instead of the stock froyo.

    • To alleviate any iDevice peripheral lockin you are suffering from. There is a device called an "ANYCOM 82599VRP FIPO Bluetooth® Module".

Its basically a small bluetooth receiver that has a iPod dock slot in it, ie. it pretends to be an iDevice, and so can plug in to anything your iDevice could.

So you can simply plug that module into whatever peripherals you have, and connect it to your non Apple phone via BT. It supports AD2P and the controls profiles. Only extra thing you need to worry about is charging your phone, small price to pay I reckon.

They are quite cheap on ebay, especially if you bought something like the VW Golf iPod Accessory!

  • People are keen on iDevices precisely because they are NOT keen on comparing the relative strengths and weaknesses of operating systems and handset hardware. They want someone else that they trust to assure them that they are buying the market leader, and don't have to worry about anything else.

This is what the Android fanbase simply refuses to understand - the vast majority of the market simply don't care about the tech details.
