  • Looks like a good deal, would go for it, except for the fact that it's from shopping square. been stuffed around by them enough, without waiting for a $50 cashback that they will never sort out.

    • how does the cashback work exactly? is it instant or do you have to jump through hoops to get it?

        SOLD OUT

  • Most likely a WD Caviar Green inside.

    • are they any good?

      • +2

Slow data read/write due to 5400RPM spin speed but they're reliable and energy efficient.

        • +2

Just remember though guys, we're talking benchmark "slow", not stopwatch "slow"; the reliability, heat, noise & energy benefits far outweigh any performance deficits! Just food for thought! ;)

          • @StewBalls: I had one, and I'd say it is stopwatch slow. The HD would idle after some time and take time to restart which was pretty annoying. I returned it and got samsung hard drives, and they were noticably faster when accessing files. If all you're doing is treating it as a backup storage device, then it works just fine.

            • +2

@Saaaaaad: The WD gren drives conserve energy by parking the heads when not in use which is why they would take a bit longer than a conventional drive to start up. No doubt the Samsung drive you got is a normal 7200RPM drive and by the sound of it you were using it fo your OS drive which is not really what they are designed to be used for.

So there is nothing wrong with WD Green drives at all, they are fine for storage drives which is what they are designed for. If you need speed then you need a WD Blue or Black drive which cost more because they are faster drives and designed for usage as an OS drive.

I hope that doesn't sound like I'm having a go at you, because I'm not. ;)

              • +1

@TheWiz: on top of that we are using them with a USB cable, that isn't that fast real world anyway so it shouldn't make much difference in the real world

  • The usual ShippingSquare rip-off Shipping applies too.
$20 to Adelaide. even so this is a very good deal if the $50 Cashback comes through.

    • although…if you bought the 500gb, shipping would only cost $18 - 2 bucks cheaper
      http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_8866_500GB_Noontec_S3352_…

Can't imagine there would be too much difference between the two in terms of weight/size.
      Course….the 500gb isn't on special…..which may shrink it slightly…

      • +2

$20 to syd city seems a bit rich

still a great deal though, picked up a wd green from msy the other day for $136 or something the that effect. $119 aint bad at all for a 2tb enclosure delivered. this is a bargain but only because of the paypal cashback

      • +1

if you bought the 500gb, shipping would only cost $18 - 2 bucks cheaper

That additional ~1500gb of empty space weighs a fair bit you know dude! ;)

        • indeed…..a $2 gouge…

  • So the $50 cashback is from whome? PayPal, Noontec, Shopping square?

    • from what i understand its a paypal promotion

      • nope

"PayPal is not affiliated or responsible for any of the promotions offered by Shopping Square."

I don't trust SS promotions after being burned with the facebook one, so no buy from me.

  • Quite tempted.
I just want the drive inside really.

  • +3

Good price but not interested without eSATA or even USB3.

  • can u open up the case and just take out the drive and install it into your PC?

also, is there a problem with the WD Caviar Green drive? Heard someone mentioned it but not sure what's wrong with it.

    Cheers.

    • I found them very slow to spin up when in my NAS. Seagates in the same NAS are much quicker.

      • +2

good luck with those seagates lasting. wd's appear to be the better drives in the last couple of years although ive heard wd greens arent that great in raid/nas etc and some newer wd's (particularly the 2tb versions) dont even work with raid systems at all.

        • +1, even after refurb/replacement, my two Seacrate 1tb 7200.11s are ridiculously slow to spin up, regardless of power settings! Clunk, whirr, wait! :p

It's actually faster to get stuff off my external USB WD Elements (well, small stuff anyway)! ;)

  • +1

    Well I ordered 1 :)
Used my reward points from the other day too ($50 credit for $25… paypal offer too)

    • But they require you pay with Paypal, will it be a problem for the cash back?

    • lol! ur gonna get burned :P

      • I guess SS probably will invalid the $25 cash back

  • how does it work actually?
just "add in cart" and "check out"?
do i have to enter any Coupon Code?

  • +5

Sold out. So another dodgy by Shopping Square with almost no stock?

    • Yeah would have been a decent deal if they had any left. Cashback isn't deposited until sometime before the 31st October though. I don't see why it should take that long, but these cashback offers always do.

  • USB2.0 only? no eSATA?

    • +2

USB 2 only. I'd just take the hard disk out and use it. Crap case anyway.

      • +1

I think that is what most people would be doing, considering the price is cheaper than buying a 2TB HDD on it's own.

      • lol good idea

  • hmm…. doesnt support win7

    • "or latest version"

    • "or latest version"

  • After two really bad experiences with Shopping Square I'll never touch their bargains again. Not worth waiting six weeks for something from a local dealer.

  • Aah, would have gotten it if it had firewire or something faster — but alas at 2TB you would be looking at using it as a backup disk and unfortunately it would be too slow for me.

  • Out of stock.

  • out of stock :(

  • Bought 1 with Paypal before it sold out!
