  • I have one of these but personally prefer something bigger, i.e. http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/90137701/. They also have actual 'whiskey' glassess too: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/80216303/.

The larger glasses are better for drinking with ice. And those are brandy snifters, not normally associated with whisky. If anything, the Glencairn has become the definitive whisky glass in recent years. But at the end of the day, whatever works for the individual.

    • You kids have no idea until you chug it through a yard glass..
They didn't name the London MSP Scotland Yard after nothing!

    • I have a box of 6 Emir crystal tumblers that I bought from Harris scarfe for about $29 for a pack of 6. I liked them (look and feel) but like others mention, this glencairn has become the definitive whisky glass. Im really glad I got it, really helps with the nose =)

  • Love these sorts of glasses, but I think like any drink you really want to smell properly, its better to use a wide glass like cognac or red wine glasses.

    • Yeah cognac/brandy works well. Great your nose right in there.

    • Depending on the whisky you're drinking, I think a wide glass would allow the characteristics to change too quickly. Having a narrower glass helps slow the rate of oxidation, but I guess it depends on what you want.

      • Sounds like you're drinking too slowly ;)

        • I definitely do drink slowly. Good whisky isnt cheap, especially now ive found a type that i really like. Different flavours come out at different times, up to 30 mins with balvenie. Its a complex drink lol, too much of a rush to drink it fast. Once I get a bottle of Nikka 12, Yamazaki, Macallan, I definitely want to be "savoring" it, at $200 a bottle.

      • 1 malt
        2 fingers
        3 ice cubes
        4 minutes
        5 sips

        Repeat

Wankerise all you like, but scotch is a 5 step program :-)

        • Step 3 makes me cry. Ice removes flavour. I've never tried a whiskey that is improved with ice that is worth drinking at all.

The glencairn focuses the aroma the most for a small shot, with its tapered edge. If I remember correctly it also has a good thick weight on it's bottom so it holds well in your hand.

    • The weight and shape is also supposed to prevent the glass from tipping over easily, and if it does it should not spill depending on how full the glass is

      • Or how full you are

Sometimes on sale for half price.

    • Thanks for the share, but not exactly the same product!
Also not saying that the linked product is inferior, but the Glencairn is the original design and the yardstick. Interested to know what opinions are, for those who have both.

  • Already have two and will get another two for when i have a few friends over. Make no mistake these are fantastic for nosing the whisky. The wide style glasses dont allow you to get the full palate of aromas. Plus once you throw some ice in you wont smell a thing.

If you're looking to do more than just drink pick up one of these.
