AmEx Card - Which Companies Don't Charge a Surcharge?

I'm interested in finding out a list of companies which don't charge a Surcharge for using Amex.

I know that Coles & Woolies, which is great because AMEX give 3x points per dollar spent. Does anyone have any other companies? (I live in Qld).

TIA

Depends what you view poor workmanship as…

The Great Western Hotel in Cobar doesn't at the dining room.
Also Tenyasu in Shimokitazawa, but we struggled without English menus.

Is this helpful, or is maybe the question a bit broad?

  • i'd also like to know this so I can update my list of companies i'll avoid doing business with

    • BP
    • Bunnings
    • PayPal purchases (withdraw your funds before you purchase anything)
    • BP - it depends on which ones you go to. I've been to BPs that don't charge a surcharge and BPs that do charge and surcharge.

    • PayPal adding surcharge if you try to add money to account using credit card.

      • You do not need to add money to PayPal to use PayPal. All you have to do is add your card to it and when you purchase, they will charge your card without surcharge. This what happens to me.

  • mcdonalds

    • That's a good list. So, do all of the companies on that list have Zero % Surcharge?

I've just gone through a couple of Amex statements and here's where I have used mine with no transaction fees. Note I'm based in Perth so have excluded a few shops/chains that I don't think are national.

Woolies (including buying 5% discounted gift cards via CashRewards)
    Coles
    Kmart/Target/Big W
    Officeworks
    Dan Murphys/Liquorland/BWS
KFC (no support in Xpress app yet, but accepted if you choose to pay in store)
McDonalds (not sure about self service terminals but have used it multiple times in drive thru)
    Hungry Jacks
    Harvey Norman
    Superpharmacy
    Coles Express
    Caltex Woolworths
    BP
    HIF insurance
    Myer
    David Jones
    Wilson Parking
    Uber
    Grill'd
    JR/Duty Free

My other cc is a Bankwest MasterCard and to be honest I find that I use the Amex in more places than I do with the BW card. I have the Amex set as my default payment method on my phone with Android Pay, and sometimes I'm a bit cheeky and pretend I don't see the big "NO AMEX" sign plastered on the credit card terminal in some shops and I just tap it anyway to see if it works. Sometimes it does, other times it beeps at you and I have to say "oh whoops, I need to try that again" and switch to the BW Mastercard.

Add your Amex card to your Paypal account for sites online that don't accept Amex and it solves that problem.

Edit: One other thing to note, some terminals don't like to accept Amex contactless, they will insist you insert the card. This happens with Android/Apple pay as well as simply tapping the card. So don't automatically assume a place doesn't accept Amex, try to insert the card first if you aren't sure.

    • Wilson Parking

I'm pretty sure wilson has a surcharge (at least in Sydney CBD)

      • I'm just going by what's on my credit card statement. I don't use my Amex at any business who imposes a surcharge.
The place I work at is a large 'campus' and has thousands of bays in a multi story and on the ground spread around all managed by Wilson, there is no credit card surcharge here for staff or the public. There is probably surcharges at your normal multi story carparks in the CBD but in my experience they don't discriminate based on what type of card you have (ie. same fee for Visa, MC, Amex, Diners etc)

      • Yeah, that charge applies to whatever credit card you use to pay.

    • My local VIC KFC doesn't take Amex.

      • Maybe it's a Collins store thing? WA/QLD/NT has a different franchise owner to the other states.

    • Great list! Thanks.

Big W, and also get 3x points there on Platinum Edge.

  • I'd argue there's too many places to list. Amex acceptance isn't that rare - try Diners Club for a slim list (which is my corporate card).

    • Yes, I know it's accepted at many places, but I'm after a list of those who don't charge a 3% surcharge

    • Do they still issue Diners? never ever seen one, even when working at retail that accepted them. I assumed they were pre visa and mastercard

      • Yes they do and you can still sign up to one on their website (and like I said its my corporate card :/ )

I think the back office stuff is all handled by Citibank though.

  • Do the 5% discount Wish Gift cards still get the 3x AMEX points?

  • I found most Japanese owned Japanese restaurants do not impose any credit card surcharge in Sydney. Try your luck in QLD.

  • I find most places either accept it or flat out say no. Only a very few places have had a surcharge and I'm talking no name random places.

  • ..and don't forget http://travel.americanexpress.com.au/ either. You won't find any of the bargain flight lists, just the regular price without any CC or booking fees on flights, hotels etc. I always compare them with Trivago, Booking.com, Webjet, Qantas, Virgin etc and very often they come out the cheapest. Amex Travel may only be 1.5% cheaper when booking a domestic flight, but hey, 1.5% off is still cheaper than booking direct with the airline.
