    Good for Gopro?

I got burnt when I thought I was smarter than OzBargain and got the 128GB Evo Plus ~$10 cheaper than on eBay's Shopping Square deal…turns out it was a fake! …and a very very convincing one at that!

So, I've been holding out for another deal and this seems to be it!

    Thanks, OP!

    • How did you find out it was a fake ? I bought one from shopping express and it was in chinese packaging.. made in china maybe for the domestic market.

      • hey, I replied below…its a wall of text so be warned.

      • I've been in this exact situation a few times and the last one I had was extremely convincing.

Ultimately I'd use a tool like this to verify that all of the address space is actually writable, since fakes often "pretend" to have more capacity than they do:

        https://app-universe.net/en/fakeflashtest.1476.html

    • Yes please tell. I bought 3 from shopping square myself.

      • +4

I think he was saying he found it elsewhere cheaper than the Shopping Square deal and it turned out to be fake.

        • Ah cheers.
It's hard to tell the legit ones and fakes ones. I bought a fake led Lenser flashlight once on eBay. Didn't know it was fake until a few years later when I was able to compare against an original I bought in cotd.

        • +2

@harkoliar: Might be other way around, the one you bought from cotd could be fake as well…. lol

        • +2

@dlovep: funny thing is the fake one I have is still going strong I haven't used the original one yet.

        • +2

          @harkoliar:

fake one I have is still going strong

          Genuine fake.

        • +3

@harkoliar: Good question…and if it wasn't for the fact that I needed to print some photos that day I might not have known. The packaging is absolutely flawless. I am confident that if I bought a legit one from any local shop and returned it with the fake one they would not question anything. The only thing that made me question its authenticity was the fact that the printing on the included SD card adapter was slightly offset. The opposite side of the SD contacts where it is a straight line followed by a 45 degree angle is supposed to have the bottom half covered in grey but the fake one had an offset of ~1mm from the edge where as the cutaway was slightly less but I chalked it down to it being a printing defect and didn't think anything more of it.

Anyway, I tore it open, plugged it into one of those awesome Lexar USB micro SD card readers and transferred my photos. However, it wouldn't read in any of the photo machines I tried, with or without the the adapter, and in different stores as well! So, finally, I walked into JB HiFi and plugged it into one of the laptops and sure enough it read fine.

After that, I went home and checked it again and it worked. That was when I remembered the SD card adapter thing. Fortunately, I have an micro SD EVO card so I pulled it out and compared them side-by-side. Sure enough, the printing on the fake looks like a photocopied, shrunken, version of the logo with a few pixels in the white space that definitely shouldn't have been there. Furthermore, the printing on the numeral was extremely slim and while completely legible it indicated poor quality printing. The authentic one on the other hand was crisp in every way.

Even at this point I wasn't entirely convinced. So, I copied large video files to gauge the transfer speed. It would not read nor write about ~7MB/s, much lower than spec. The genuine one performed exatly to spec. So, I complained to the seller who refunded me within 10 minutes but before I could do anything the seller had pulled all their listings off eBay. What sucks is that there were already positive reviews for the same listing from other buyers who were unaware and so s/he would have still made a profit on the scam.

My intention was to wait it out until another identical deal came up so I could photograph them side-by—side and give a rundown of the inconsistencies that buyers should look out for. However, when this deal came up I couldn't pass it up. I still have everything from the fake which I will at some point document to help unsuspecting buyers…

256 GB or bust. Still waiting

    • +2

512 GB or Go Home I say.

    • 256gb for what, these are much slower than an ssd for a bit limited for nuc or laptop purposes , and a bit big for cameras …. who has 200gb of contents interesting enough for friends to watch.

      • The only thing I can think of are DAP (e.g. Cowon J3 in the past, the FiiO X-N series, etc.) users with huge libraries. If you do on forums like head-fi.org you'll find people with two 128GB (sometimes even larger) in a single device to store their lossless libraries.

With that said, I guess even a class 10 is more than enough to play music just fine.

      • +1

        Phone.

        -lots of photos & videos
        -large apps/games
        -music collection
-tv shows or movies to watch on the go

Could easily fill a 256gb card with those (and need a fast card for photos/video, particularly taking burst/RAW photos and 4K video).

      • +1

I would put it in my Surface Pro. Cheaper than paying Microsoft's prices for a higher capacity model. It's $500 extra to go from 128GB to 256GB. So $128GB extra storage for $500. You can get 256GB for $67. That's a big saving to put stuff on. Speed is decent.

      • Porn. My HDD for the porn collecion was just under 500GB.

Dont judge, had a lonely life before I started going out. The irony…

Shut it, it's difficult enough :(

  • Thanks OP, bought one

  • How does it compare to the Evo Plus? Still got one in packaging I got for $52.95 from a recent deal I saw on here

    • EVO+ has a write speed of 20mbps

  • These would be equivalent speeds for 4k video recording for the new samsung s8's as the 256gb Evo+ right?

Main thing is the UHS-3 i assume? I have an Evo (UHS1) - the orange entry level, seemse to record 20 secs of 4k on my sony xperia z3 ok? I assume it's not advisable to run with that ? That said shopping square is $56 or so for the 128 gb evo- so getting the evo select would be a step up for the same price.

IS the evo select a different geographical name for the evo+? I dont' see it advertised on aus samsung's microsd cards?

Can't see who fulfills this amazon order - if it's going to be a genuine seller?

I have bought sd cards off shopping square too which seem so cheap - i have noticed alot of micro sd cards questioning if their stuff is real.. i never noticed with my samsung evo - are they known for fakes?

  • Perfect! Was looking for a MicroSD for my S8+. Thanks heaps OP!

  • Evo select is the Amazon only version of the Samsung Evo +. You might want to check speeds. The Evo + only goes up to 90mbs for the 256gb version, the 128 is significant slower. If this is really as fast as the Samsung 256gb, I'd be all over it like a cheap suit. Waiting for 256gb version to reach normal human territory!!

    • It days 100 and 90 read and write speeds on the product page so it is faster than the 128gb evo+.

      • yes just checked Samsung website and the me128Da is the old version that does 80/20 and this is the me128Ga version that does 100/90, so that's me sold then (damn that crazily priced 256gb!)

        • cool! But is this seller on amazon genuine? or is this fulfilled by amazon itself??

I too was looking at the 258 gb and it came under $179 on shopping square - which some claim is fake, some real. I have bought a 64 gb evo before and was fine.. but the next alternative for the samsung s8 was a sandisk ultra 200gb version. but apparently this is similar to the 80/20 speeds you mentioned?

So this would be equivalent to the samsung evo (the sandisk ultra 200gb) and not compatible with 4k video recording?

That said I doubt i'd 4k video record, but if it's $67 aud delivered, this is pretty much shopping square price for the evo, but with 4k quality. I assume it would speed up photos and all other day to day tasks by just having faster write speed? With 4k video the main feature that would benefit from this?

Still mostly interested in how safe buying off this amazon seller would be?

        • to save myself money i have been telling myself to buy a 128gb and wait for a price drop in 258 gb too haha.

        • @SaberX: Shipped from Amazon itself.

        • @lostn:

ok so it seems trustworthy/legit then to buy this, as surely they'd be genuine if vetted by amazon?

        • +1

@SaberX: I can't guarantee that, because Amazon can be duped by their suppliers also. But they have a good refund/exchange policy (among the best I've seen) so if it turns out to be a fake, you're not SoL.

        • @lostn:

thanks mate. i ordered it anyway in the end… taking a chance :) but like you said, if it turns out fake then i'm more safe than other sellers.

to check, would you just run crystal mark for speeds? And fill up with dummy files totalling 100gb?

        • @SaberX: That's a good way to test, yes. But make sure your card reader supports those speeds and isn't bottlenecking the SD card.

        • @lostn:

oh yes, that's probably where my cheap asia bought 'all card types' reader fails.

I have one built into my laptop - how does one determine if it's of decent quality to not cause bottlenecks beyond the SD card's native speed bottlenecks?

    • interesting. so evo select is an amazon only model? According to the next response it is as fast as the Evo+ class 3 cards (in the 258gb) - which is also confusing, as i only just realised today after research that the evo+ below 256gb came in UHS 1 up until recently, so hence why the subtle move up to UHS3 (4k video recording compatible) in the 258 gb model.

  • Filled the card in my A6000 last weekend, swapped to the backup card (Sandisk Extreme Plus 32GB) and it refused to record video in XAVC-S. Photo computer said Noooo.

Needless to say, this will be #1 card and the 64GB moves to #2. Thanks OP. Finally bought an SD card when I actually needed one.

  • Is this overkill for dslr? Don't use burst mode or 4k video

    • It is really. The most you can make use of at 1080p is generally only 40MB/s, and you would only use that with a hacked firmware like Magic Lantern on Canon. It is a limit of the interface chosen in some cases, or artificially limited so as not to compete with a higher model etc.
So short answer way more than you need.
This thread is for a MicroSD which are generally cheaper, and in this case it looks like a good price. It will be hard to find a slower, reliable brand card for cheaper.

  • Any good for a nintendo switch?

    • +2

      It's overkill for the Switch.

Digitalfoundry and others benchmarked game load times with Switch Cartridge, internal memory, fast microSD and slow microSD. Faster microSDs did not load any faster than slow ones. There is no point going for faster cards. Spend that money on capacity instead. Whatever card reader they put in is a crap one and has bottlenecks, not taking advantage of the faster speeds of expensive cards.

Save money and just buy an Evo.

Incidentally, the slowest read times was cartridge and the fastest was internal memory.

      • Sweet, cheers for that!

  • +2

Really tempted….but I really don't think many (if at all) electronic devices actually can write anywhere close to 90mb/s.

  • Really tempted….but I don't think many (if at all) electronic devices can actually write anywhere close to 90mb/s.

  • This will record 4k on my sony action cam right?

  • dropped the money on this one, as it seems faster and delivered by amazon. cheaper by US$1 to have it delivered to my nearest post office, than to my door, which would just get taken to the post office anyway, via their parcellocker feature!

  • Really tempted….but I don't think many (if at all) electronic devices can actually write anywhere close to 90mb/s.

    • To me it would only really be 4k video….

That said, for $67 it's one of those 'buy and wait for 256gb to come down in price' decisions. I mean previously 128gb was an evo at $60 give or take, now your getting this card for $67.

It's pretty hard to argue biting the bullet and dealing with less capacity for now. MSY had the sandisk ultra 200gb at $119… but even then this is $0.52/gb as opposed to $0.595 for the sandisk. That and you don't get an UHS-3 card that "could" technically goto 4k recording. The downside is I probably wouldn't do much recording on it as it'd eat into 128gb i'm sure pretty quick (once you remove half of the space you proabably have filled with music, movies and pictures/videos already recorded).

But yeah, hopefully the 200gb and 256 gb options will be closer to $100 in a yr or two to make upgrading worth it (this will probably be $30-40 by then though! haha)

  • Is this card good for the Canon powershot G7X-II?

    • Sure, but it's also a major overkill.

      • Does it affect how it operates?

        • Check out this site . Don't know if your camera is on there but basically the limiting factor is the camera in a lot of cases, and you can just buy a card with lower write speeds for less.

  • +2

Thanks, OP just bought a 128GB for my S8+

    • +1

I did it also… Are you liking your S8+? ANything I should do add subtract? The awesome thing is… Hardly Any bloatware… I am enjoying the photography on it.

  • +1

Thanks op for 'Blowing' this bargain to us ;)

  • I'm struggling to understand how this evo select being just for amazon works versus samsung's global lines? Evo, evo+? there's even an evo select pro, but won't go into there.

The evo itself for 128gb is UHS-1 but listed at $59.99 on amazon. Yet this evo select is $44.99? how on earth does this work? Yet it's UHS-3?

Per posters above this card is on paper, specifications wise superior write, read speed, and would assumedly have the exact same functions and build as a normal samsung evo line? So you're basically getting a porsche for cheaper than a toyota camry? I just don't get it? Or is this just priced bloody good?

    • Sale on this line, but no sale on the others, thus better one selling cheaper than slower card.

      • I'm sold… in the checkout now. Seems like no cashback. apart from that given this is USD based (amazon.com) one would need a no forex fee card right? amex would convert at their rates plus the % fee they usually charge? so 28 degrees for best price?

edit: when you compare this to the evo line this is a real big sale then… glad i didn't drive into MSY today during lunch for their 200gb for $119,would've been spewing. Their crappy phone service (not picking up/getting through) probably saved me.

        • All good - bought now! Here by june 6 to june 9 - jeez - seems fast! not too shabby..s hould survive another week or so into june :)

          Thanks OP

        • Any idea why the cashback doesn't work?

        • @OldKing: I'm not aware there ever was any CB on Amazon.

        • @OldKing: Scrap that! Only "Home" products (Bedding, Bath, Home Decor, Wall Art, Vacuums & Floor Care) are eligible.

        • @OldKing:

haha yeah at the time i fell into that trap too. it has it, but in fineprint its for categories that were completely different to this deal. so yeah i just bought it and screwed Cash rewards haha.

  • Good price for performance but according to camel it's the regular price?

    • +2

it's the regular price because it's the new version. it'll go up up once the initial stocks have sold to around $59.99 US$ I'd imagine. It's to replace the 2016 ME128DA version with a GA version, so brings speeds into line with the 2016 256gb version.

The evo select is the amazon rebadged Evo+ from Samsung (Amazon is the only retailer big enough to warrant Samsung doing this). The specs are the same. Make sure you compare the ME128DA to the ME128GA to ensure you're getting the right card. This speed increase is significant, and the smaller (64/32) sized cards are still slower. The main difference is sustained write throughput to UHS 3 I think. It'll do for a year or two, then filter down my gadgets from the phone to the tablet etc.

If you can't find the evo select on samsungs page, look at the 2017 evo + line, as that's what it is.

      • how do you know they will increase the price? are you just guessing?

is it possible that they are just replacing the U1 models with U3 models, keeping them at the price point?

(genuine question, not having a go)

        • as RRP is US$99.99 and from past experience, this is the way they always do it. Having been an amazon us and amazon uk customer for the last 15 years, it seems to be a pattern they adopt. Maybe they won't, but probably they will. supply and demand.

      • How do you know its the same as the Pro's though? Perhaps the pro uses MLC and the select uses TLC? Much like the SSDs, the 850 series use TLC and PRO uses MLC, similar performance but write cycles is another story. Not entirely convinced we're getting Pro's for regular price TBH.

        • I didn't say it was the same as the pro's, I said it was in line with the evo select 256gb (or at least closer to,) rather than half as fast. The pro line, I'm not sure, you'd need to ask a true geek. probably to do with small read/writes but who uses these for an os? (other than pi maybe) . Most phones won't support the speed internally, but it's good to reduce the potential for bottlenecks.

As far as good sized reliable brand storage goes that can decant via card reader at good speed when full, these look like they'll take some beating!

      • +1

If you can't find the evo select on samsungs page, look at the 2017 evo + line, as that's what it is.

The advertised speed of 128GB Evo Select (100/90) is much faster the 128GB Evo+ (80/20). In fact it is slightly faster than the 128GB Pro+ (95/90).

This speed to price ratio kills anything from Sandisk, which would need to be Extreme Pro.

But admittedly Samsung's speed ratings and branding are very confusing. The 256GB Evo+ is 95/90 which is the same speed as Pro+ despite the Pro line being their premium range and Evo being budget range.

        • Look for 2017 model. It's the me128ga. Samsung do call it the Evo+. Very confusing as exactly same name as the me128da from 2016 which was a lot slower. . Evo select is what amazon call the evo+ that is made specifically for them (hence the 'am' at the end of the model). Pro has better small 4k and randoms but will still fall way behind ssd and volatile memory so for recording and file storage it's irrelevant.

        • @seraphim2017: So Evo+ is now packing the speeds of Pro+? What happens to the Pro+? Do they discontinue that line? Does Evo+ 2017 carry the same price tag as Evo+ 2016?

        • @lostn:

I didn't say that either?!?!?! I don't work for Samsung or amazon, it's easy to just google the model number and work out by logic and manufacturing dates.

best thing is to think do I need this? if you do, just buy it. it's not exactly expensive! :)

        • @seraphim2017:

yeah, what confuses me with all these brands: samsung, sandisk etc. is all the model names and 'purported' up to speeds of read/write.

They realy need to clean up the industry for the less informed so you can just hop on and choose a card simply.

I've bought this select anyway. seems decent enough to use until a 256gb card becomes cheap enough with 4k speeds (U3)supported for recording.

    • Yeah, is this a deal or RRP?

      • It's a definite deal.

  • will this play nice with blackvue? i tried Sandisk and blackvue's original and they both came up short "check the sd card"

  • Thanks Op. Just got one for my A119S.

  • Edit - Removed comment.

Can anyone tell me if this SD is fast/reliable enough to be added as permanent storage (e.g install applications & games, not just play media) to this laptop I bought:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/306386

I once had a laptop with the Sandisk Ultrafit USB 3.0 used as perm storage but it died after a couple of months, I assumed it was the constant read/writes to it but also that particular model I found out was notorious for over-heating. So not too sure if was wear & tear or heat that broke it.

I'm assuming SD cards don't have the heat problem but also arent has fast as usb 3.0?

    • +2

It wasn't designed for that purpose, but it would work for a while I guess. It's not fast enough for a boot OS if you ask me, so I wouldn't recommend it.
