Based on the real-life women who have inspired Mike Mills (Beginners), 20th Century Women is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us and the times that shape us, showcasing the director's unique visual style, a terrific soundtrack and three beautifully realised leads played by Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning.
Set in California in the summer of 1979, the film centres on Dorothea (Bening), a single mum who is raising her teenage son, Jamie (Zumann), at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. To help guide him through life, she enlists the help of the two women in their lives; Abbie (Gerwig), a free-spirited, punk-loving photographer living as a boarder in Dorothea's home; and Jamie's crush Julie (Fanning), a savvy and provocative teen.
