16 months old phone stuck rebooting (Google Nexus 5X)

I have a google nexus 5x that I bought from kogan 16 months ago, so it is outside of the manufacturers warranty.

It was fine until a few weeks ago it randomly turned off and wouldn't turn on again. It eventually started a day later but now it is stuck in google loading screen repeatedly.

I try boot from the safe mode and have tried the recovery setting but it still happens.

Its started a few times but then it goes back to the google load screen loop.

Not sure what to do, I imagine it would be a costly process to get it fixed, but it is still a $400 phone.

Kogan wouldn't replace/repair it, would they?

thanks

Try getting into recovery and flashing rom again.or a different rom.
If problem persists then you don't have much options mate.

Hopefully it's just a corrupted file in your system.
If you can boot to recovery, you should be able to copy important files (photos/documents) across to a PC via USB. I don't know of a way to backup your SMS/MMS.
If Google's recovery allows you to make a recovery image, try that, but I suspect you'd need a third party recovery.

After backing up as much as you can, try a factory reset from Recovery.
If that fails, you will need to boot into Download mode and flash a fresh copy of the ROM with Fastboot (Tutorial below).. this does require a small amount of computer skills and familiarity with command line interfaces, so if you're not comfortable doing it, find a geeky friend willing to give it a crack, or take it to a phone repair place.

If none of that works, then you may have some hardware fault and it would be worth contacting Kogan to see whether they're able to assist you.

    • Solid advice. Although I think the OP should be careful to relock the bootloader after fastboot flashing if they do end up sending it to Kogan/LG, and that particular guide is not very clear on how to do that for the N5X.

Section 10 of this thread has a little more targetted information for the N5X.

  • Most stories on the web about the infamous LG bootloop (Nexus 5X is made by LG) point to the problem being a hardware issue that is pretty much impossible to repair. There are some solutions involving heating / cooling the device which would make it possible for you to load and transfer any media on the device you want to save. Here are some interesting articles on the topic:

There is an expectation that your phone would last longer than 16 months, I'd be reaching out to LG if I were you. Good luck.

  • thanks for the replies, I'll try LG (wasn't sure if I try LG or Kogan)

unfortunately I never read about that issue before purchasing, I even recommended that phone to a friend who also bought it!

    • It doesn't happen to every phone, the LG G4 is the worst offender and my mother still has one that hasn't had this issue yet.

  • It actually does start up on occasion - it is on now. I am not sure what I can do if anything to fix it when it is on though.

    • I suggest you just get everything off the phone that you want to save while you can. Perhaps your phone is facing another issue, maybe LG will be able to fix it. I suggest you contact Kogan if they have any other policy to cover this common problem, they will likely direct you to LG but you never know.

      • I did contact LG who told me to contact Kogan, so will have to wait for a reply for them.

    • I've got the original Nexus 5 and it went into a bootloop two years ago. The problem is actually a stuck power button - constantly holding onto the power button causes the reset. After some banging on the power button, it actually booted up. To get around it ( I am still using the phone to date), I have stopped using the power button by installing a gravity screen app, which uses the front facing cam and the gyroscope to replace the power button to turn the screen on and off, respectively. Not really a fix, but a compromise.

  • Like has been mentioned already if it's Lg and bootlooping it's likely a hardware fault and needs to be fixed. Because you bought from Kogan you're not covered by Australian consumer laws but it's still worth contacting them to see if you can work out a resolution with them.

  • Actually looking at the Kogan website I might be wrong if you purchased from Kogan Australia instead of Kogan Hong Kong
    "22

Kogan is an Australian company and therefore Australian buyers are still protected by consumer laws

Looking at their website they sell from both their Australian company and Hong Kong company. Do you know which one you purchased from. The Nexus 5x they have listed now is from Hong Kong but the model they were selling 16 months ago may have been Australian.

        • It is definitely an international model as they gave me an aud/other country power plug. I remember when they sent it they didn't even include the plug so I had to wait for a week with a new phone I couldn't charge.

        • @Atre: Being that LG is so well known now for this problem they should offer you something, I'd be surprised if they didn't.

        • @Atre:

It is definitely an international model

Therefore most likely you bought it from Kogan Hong Kong and therefore you're not covered by Australia Consumer Law.

        • @scubacoles: It says right here that Kogan products are covered by consumer law even if they are bought from HK

        • @Atre:
          Surprisingly excellent news for you!

Having said that, the linked articles don't seem to provide much supportive evidence that you will have a hassle free experience.

        • @Atre:
But I think that means that Kogan will be responsible for repairs etc under their warranty, which has now expired.

But it's be great if they did fix it.

        • @kiitos: yes I realise that, but there was some confusion between whether items from Kogan were protected or not, so I posted the link

  • I had a very similar issue with a Nexus 5x purchased in Australia. The phone was 15 months old. I contacted LG customer support directly. I sent them the phone. It was repaired with a new motherboard and returned to me in less than a week. No charge except for the initial postage. Very quick. This is a known issue with the Nexus 5x.

    • groarke not sure they would do the same for me, as LG support first question was if it was an australian or overseas model

  • I also just had this problem on a 18 month old Nexus 5X. I bought the phone via google store.
Rang google, they sent a new phone and organised a pickup of the broken phone. No problems at all and no out of pocket.

  • Same issue, bought from eGlobal 14 months old, submitted a request, waiting for them to reply

  • Had a similar problem on my mi max i no its a different phone but is there any flashing tools for pc where you can flash it my phone wouldnt even turn on had to take out battery for a few minutes then phone had a heart beet and finally was able to flash it back thru pc
