Ended up getting a HTC 10 (because it has a headphone jack) and looking for a 3.1 Type C to Type C cable to hook it up to my desktop, which also has a single Type C USB 3.1 connector. No good reason for doing so, don't really need 10Gbit speed, but it's there, might as well use it right? Yes I am aware that the storage on the two devices will limit transfer speeds (I have a Samsung 950 PRO NVMe, but I imagine the phone will be the rate limiting step) but damn it, I want to do it.
Before anybody says Blitzwolf, their ampcore seems to be USB 2.0 only and their marketing material for the Type C to Type C mentions a mere 480Mbit transfer speed (i.e. USB 2.0 speeds), for reasons that are completely beyond me; why would anybody make a USB 2.0 Type C to Type C cable?
JB HiFi have a belkin for $40. Amazon's amazonbasics 3.1 Type C to Type C cable comes to $24.39 USD/$33 AUD after shipping.
Anybody know of anything cheaper? Would settle for USB 3.0 Type C to Type C I guess (if such a thing exists?), but that extra 5 Gigabit/sec of speed…
Cheap USB 3.1 Type C to Type C Cable
Comments
Yeah I agree, go with the AmazonBasics cable. At least that meets the specifications and is USB-IF compliant (that is built to specification and won't fry your device). Cheap unknown brands skip this to make it cheaper. They are expensive to make because of all the specifications they have to meet and its a long list. This was similar to when Thunderbolt 1 came out - expensive to make but with the exception that it also required intel's licensing. It's hard enough to convince people of the new interface but we're slowing transitioning.
USB-C right now is a mess and many people are getting confused. IT companies really screwed it up with the marketing.
USB-C is the interface or the plug. It solves the problem of which way to plug in the cable and to make 1 Cable for everything. But these can be USB 2.0 or 3.0
USB 3.1 Gen 1 is 5Gbs (USB 3.0 + Type C interface = USB 3.1 Gen 1 + other additional specifications like power delivery, display etc).
USB 3.1 Gen 2 is 10Gbps plus other additional specifications like faster displays. As such only devices that support this mostly RAID storage and they cost a premium already.
Then theres Thunderbolt 3 is 40Gbps. That's shares the TYPE C interface but supports all of the above but is an Intel Technology that manufacturers have to licence.TL;DR USB type C gen 2 cables are expensive to make plus right now we're in a phase to going onto the TYPE-C Interface.
EDIT: Also not many people have USB type C yet, until thats mainstream cables will be a bit expensive. Micro USB is mainstream and they cost $1.
The whole thing is a huge mess
3.0 (5Gbps) was the original name, they then released 3.1 (10Gbps)
Then renamed what was 3.0 to 3.1 gen 1, and what was 3.1 as 3.1 gen 2
So when you see something labelled as 3.1 you have to look at when it was made to figure out if it's 5 or 10 Gbps
Power delivery is completely separate, and is also compatible 2.0.
Then if you throw in the spec-breaking (with type-c) quick charge there's no chance a regular consumer will be able to figure it out.
I can only comment that I have the blitzwolf one, got on Banggood.
Only use it for charging in the car, the car charger has a QC3.0 usbC port. This is to charge a LG V20.Did you not read my post? Not looking for charging cable, looking for a USB 3.1 compliant, 10Gbit/sec, or failing that USB 3.0 5Gbit/sec. Blitzwolf don't make them (right now).
Yes I did read it that's why I said i have only used it for charging. Just adding a little info if anyone else ever reads the post.
reviews are reasonable in terms of speed and quality
That price is awefully tempting… but Benson Leung didn't have a glowing review for their earlier 2.0 A to C products. Might just roll the dice anyway. What's the worst that could happen? Fry my motherboard and my phone I guess? Worth the risk to save $20…
Being sarcastic though, unlikely to fry a port using a C to C cable, worst thing that could really happen is that its an overpriced USB 2.0 cable in disguise.I have a few UGREEN cables for my ssd enclosures. Works well, can't say for sure if it's blistering speed or not but the cable definitely is of usb 3.0 manufacture (and most definitely not usb 2.0 speed). Connectors fit well and the strain relief of good quality.
Interesting. Thanks for the feed back, will try my luck and post my results when my phone finally arrives. Probably won't be able to run any benchmarks due to android's MTP transfer protocol though :(.
@serrin: 1 month with the cable and no fried hardware. (Yet?)
No way to benchmark the cable as all I have is 2 computers with USB-C 3.0 (well one with 3.0 and one with 3.1) ports and the phone. I reacquainted myself with the fact that you can't link two computers together using USB without some weird hacks/bodges which I wasn't really too keen to try.
But it's USB 2.0
Can the HTC even support 3.1 speeds? I know my Nexus 6p can't. Even spent a decent chunk of money getting 3.1 USBC cables for no reason.
Cable I bought is this but I got mine from PC Case gear.

Actually I have no idea, GSMArena says it supports 3.1 (whether they mean 3.1 Gen 1 or proper 3.1, that is 3.1 Gen 2 I dunno). Most MicroSD cards out on the market won't be able to make use of those speeds (especially not the old first gen 128GB SanDisk I have) nor can I be sure that the MicroSD card reader/internal storage on the HTC 10 make use of the speed either. More of a
epeenbenchmarking thing.
Go for Amazon basics. At least they are fairly well known and reputable . It's known that cheap USB-C cables have issues.
