New Ryzen Build

Hello everyone,

I am looking to build a new system.

Reason : Video/Photo editing (Personal use, home/travel videos)
Content : 4K and HD content off a lumix camera.
Software : Davinci Resolve for color grading.

I already have the below :
RYZEN 1700, RX480 8GB, DeepCool Kendomen case, 250GB SSD and 650W PSU (I think Antec)

I'm struggling to settle on motherboard and RAM. I will not be using more than one video card and not overly concerned about SATA ports. So, I'll stick with 350 boards. Want it to be stable/reliable.

This system will not be used for gaming. Please suggest me few options.

Thanks in advance !

  • have you looked into a mini-itx build?

  • 32GB RAM
    ASUS PRIME B350M

  • What's an RX490?

  • 4K content eats up a lot of space. A 250GB SSD may not be sufficient. Go higher with at least 512GB minimum. 1 min 4K footage can eat up 5.8GB - shooting RAW/log for colour correction would eat up huge storage space.

Also I dont think there is a RX490. RX480/580 are the best from AMD at the moment.

    • Sorry about the video card.

Thought of using SSD only for OS and applications. I have a spare 2TB hard drive for videos

      • The 2TB HDD is ok for backup storage but not editing 4k, i would follow the other suggestions and get a larger SSD, you really do need fast disk access for the video/audio cache and direct video access to avoid frustration.
Also 32gb of ram (16gb is minimum but with 4k you should aim for 32gb)

        • Oh sure. Thanks for the advice. I'll surely go for a larger SSD.

Since, I am after 350 boards, I was looking at this motherboard:
          https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B350-PC-MATE.html

Any feedback on this board ?

@sundeepguntu: I don't think it would be much of an issue with regards to mobos. There's very little difference between mobos unless you're into tinkering/over locking. I'd be looking for future needs in terms of expand ability and ports available

At least something with 4 RAM slots or more that can support more RAM for future needs.
PCIe slot for GPU, maybe an extra slot for RAID.
Lots of SATA ports for extra HDDs
RAID Support can be beneficial if you want it on the mobo, but you can get cards for it.

          Thanks a lot !!

Hey sundeepguntu, I've just purchased my Ryzen 1500 and paired it up with an Asrock AB350 Gaming K4.

This thread was particularly useful, even though its on the Asrock forum, it's not Asrock specific:

Theres a link there that shows Ram, Mobo + Speeds they are getting.

    Good luck!

    • Thanks a lot !!

Perfect link for me check out combinations. Was having a tough time selecting MB/RAM combo.

  • Guys, I am weighing between MSI Tomahawk and PC Mate. Tomahawk is costlier but read through a few forums of it being stable. But other specs look similar to PC Mate.

Keeping price aside, is Tomahawk a better board ?
