Issues with eBay Seller - Return Damaged Goods to UK

Purchased an item from a seller in UK had great feedback and item was a good price new and sealed.

He currently in hospital and said wife would be dealing with stuff.
I asked kindly to pack very well due to the distance and item being fragile.
The packing of item item was just as important as the item inside.
They used global shipping.

It arrives packed in a jiffy bag yes jiffy not a box and its all banged up real bad.
Even item I'm unsure if damaged inside but as said packing is just is just as important as i shows off piece better.
Contact seller pretty rude told me to return most would just refund you.
I said why send such item to Australia packed like that and started calling me idiot etc.
I knew I would have trouble dealing with guy so started a return with eBay.
He has not respond yet still another 3 days before eBay step in.

But who is responsible for paying postage back? I already paid this and for it to be delivered here and if I had to send back I be out of pocket.
Also who in there right mind seller or eBay would want to send an item back damaged which more likely not get anything or much for it in state it is.
I don't mind sending back if no cost to me and get my money back but not out of pocket.
He said his wife never knew it was going overseas?
Surely they know where seller is from when buying and anyway even sending this item in jiffy bag within same company is a no no.

Whats best method here as aint eBay and Paypal separate companies? I just want my money back personal I would throw it away but shipping cost cost as much as the item did.

you paid with paypal - follow this

      But it says this:

As long as your refund request is in line with the seller’s return policy, you’re eligible for a refund on your return shipping.

According to ebay it says seller said no returns but this depends on how seller lists an auction but i opened a case with ebay, seller not yet replied and if not ebay can step in.
So do i leave this as is due to return policy by seller, should i have done this through paypal and not ebay even though it said about return policy.

And here was me having doubts about buying item from seller stuck a last min bid in and won but wished i had not know as obviously did not care to pack well.

If you paid with paypal they refund you the return postage up to $45. And the seller should cover it once they accept your return, they may said they cant give you the return label then you will need to get them agree to refund the postage plus the original cost, if they dont ask ebay to step in.

    • Im confused i already started this issue with ebay?

  • If and when its sorted and item does get returned i probably sent it like they sent to me in jiffy also why should i care?
But what gets me why seller, ebay or paypal would waste a return on a damaged item make no sense.
If i had been seller I'd just refund end full costs. But saying that sellers payment and global shipping is two different payments and i would want both those back as shipping was as much as item itself.

    • But what gets me why seller, ebay or paypal would waste a return on a damaged item make no sense.

How will the seller know if you broke it or the shipping agent or if it's even broken? There are too many scammers these days.

      • The item is still sealed but box is crushed and yes not a box it was packed in,its the unique packing which makes the item unique.
I may just send the seller the pics see what he does but i know from past response he does not give a crap.
They cost of me sending this back will be at least half if not more that total price and to be thats not suitable.
Problem here shipping cost had nothing to do with him but global and they keep that.
Really annoys me when people go to trouble of listing things take you money but dont give a crap how they ship.

  • Can't you just open a PayPal dispute?

    • +1

But does it not have to be open with ebay first? If i already started with ebay do i need to drop that before paypal.
When it says seller does not do returns and paypal says as stated on my above post that paypal only refund postage if seller accepts returns.
Is this whats shown on there listing or if seller says send back.
If i stick it out with ebay i suspect ebay will require me to pay postage back which is not going to happen im not going to be out of pocket on this.
Should i drop it with ebay and dispute with paypal.
Never lol been required or told to return or have to return most people just deal with it but this guy thinks different.

dont like my advice, then just move on. Jeez..

        • @tuzii: What advice? Can't exactly dislike what wasn't there in the first place……

    • Fair point. Any bargains we should know about, OP?

  • If not mistaken UK post has this special rate if item is packed in either certain way or weight of no more than something grams. Thus why they is the padded bag to avoid the higher charges. You may just tolerate if it's just packaging damage issue but if product is damage then open return request to seller. Let seller know how much is it to return that product with Auspost. Don't send it back if seller do not provide return cost. If seller do not want to do anything you can escalate the return to eBay customer service to get your money back.

Assuming you pay with PayPal not credit card in eBay checkout as money back doesn't work if paid with credit card in checkout.

  • I have no idea how global shipping works but i have had items sent rrom usa,as well as other countries and asked to pack well and it has, shipping costs are listed on the auction.if seller picked a cheaper option im not sure as i don't know how it works.

Its not a case of irs just packing damage item lookung through its box has come apart but this probabl would click back together who knows as item still sealed, but its packaging is not just a box or cardboard box its what makes the item more special or nice to look at,most people are not after whats inside its the whole thing.

At first i did say to seller about it damaged he asked to see pics then before i could got rude and said i was idiot which i got pissed off about so said i get ebay and paypal involved even to try and get him to sort something out i said i give also feedback it requires for this purchase said fine do what you want.
He has mostly great feebacack one reason i got this from him.
But does not care less if i neg him due to this.
I have been with ebay since days they started and not once have i left bad feeback but sometimes if people are just hard to deal with send a item not packed right etc then they deserve it do warn other.
But i need my money back first

You may have missed the part seller does not care and at first did not offer to pay its return then said do it through ebay and that
    Way i get postage back.
But that's not the point i paid for this item which seller gets and paid for shipping which global gets two payments to two different places.
I want both that back as well as if anyone wants it returned be it ebay, paypal or seller i get paid or refunded that also.
I really dont see the why anyone would want something back party damaged im just trying to follow rules.
I did say that i opened this up with ebay to deal with after several days seller has no done a thing and ebay says on it if seller does not by 23rd they step in.

But what happens there its who pays to send it back to seller as i sure aint i already paid for it and its shipping to get here its not my issue to pay send back.

Getting a quote from australia post etc what am i supposed to do with that?if seller is not interested.
Its in ebay hands right now but what happens or will happen as never had to return or deal like this before

Hi I assume you replying to my message. You may have missed: " If seller do not want to do anything you can escalate the return to eBay customer service to get your money back."

eBay is doing much better these days on returns.

      Good luck with the return.

I really dont see the why anyone would want something back party damaged im just trying to follow rules.

I would want it back, so I can resell is parts, keep it for myself and just to verify your claim. If seller agrees to refund you, he has every right to demand it back. It's not your job or position to understand why he wants it back.

If you bought a tv from JB hi-fi and it broke on arrival, are you going to argue that you should be able to keep the tv?

      • That different and item that cost me as much in shipping to get here as it did for item.its not any good as parts and to a collector who would buy this sort of thing would stay clear also you want one thats at least new or like new or if used at least acceptable but for it to get damaged in transit to not using or caring how to pack least they can do is refund or part refund.
If i have to pay to send this back there is no chance of that.
Paypal says it pays your postage back but does ebay as it probably cost me close to of more than half it cost me to get in first place and to me thats far from right.
Its like your tv you mention i would expect they to come pick up.
Just like a few years back when i had a new fridge delivered guy dented the front getting it in the door, but thats as far as he got i wanted a replacement. Ok i know this is different but a buyer who had done nothing wrong buys it and seller packs poorly, item arrives in a mess and your expected to pay half the money or more you spent to get it on first place to send it back come on.
Sounds like ebay is on sellers side here if thats how it works.

        • its not any good as parts and to a collector who would buy this sort of thing would stay clear also you want one thats at least new or like new

That's your opinion. One persons trash is another persons treasure. Just because it's no use to you, don't know what to do with it and/or has no value to you, doesn't mean others see it that way. If everyone thought the same way as you do, there would be no innovation and creativity in this world today.

Just curious, what did you buy?

        • +1

          @Ughhh:

Lets hope you dont get something off ebay then not in the shape or condition you wanted.
If your buying a new sealed brand new item you expect it that way not a mess cause it was not packed right.

        • @bwatt99:

My point wasn't even about that… Please re-read what I had quoted.

  • If the buyer changes their mind about a purchase and wants to return an item, they may need to pay return postage costs, depending on the seller's return policy. Sellers can provide a return postage address and additional return postage information for the buyer in My eBay.

Sellers pay for return postage if there's a problem with the item. For example, if the item doesn't match the listing description, is damaged or defective or is counterfeit.

    https://ocsnext.ebay.com.au/ocs/sr?query=1552&topicName=Who+…

    • There is no way in paying to return a damaged item which you sent a link for,so a seller can just sent it anyway they decide and they expect buyer to post at own expense back and that will not be cheap from australia to uk.
They probably had a deal with global im sure that not be the case with auspost.
So in other words to get my money back in full need to spend more by sending it back damaged to get my money back but loose out on whatis costs to return.
Thats not right i personally dont want or am not interested to return but i sure want my money back in full end of.
And i believe to do this it needs to be sent back.

      • Thats not right i personally dont want or am not interested to return

No one ever does but even if you bought something locally, it needs to be returned to get a refund.

It's definitely more of a hassle dealing with someone who is in the UK, but that is the risk of buying online.

        • Yes but you expect them to pack well not in a jiffy bag anybody who had sense would know that.i have sold loads of stuff over the year items that are very fragile and last thing i want or wanted was to have issues and have to give money back. But saying that these where items that where not cheap his in the other hand is not. What makes it expensive was the shipping.
So you expect when you ask them to pack to pack well but a jiffy.

        • It is up to the seller on whether they request an item to be sent back or not and also who pays for the return costs.
The majority of the time I send a replacement item when an item is received broken. I do have one at the moment where I am inclined to do diddly squat though due to the persons attitude. After 5 messages in 12 hours with the final one saying I am ignoring her and she is going to report me to the ACCC, EBay, PayPal, Fair Trade, unfair Trade and the kitchen sink, I am disinclined to assist her at all. I was not ignoring you, I was actually working and sleeping.

  • WAIT UNTIL YOU GET A RESULT FROM EBAY ON YOUR CLAIM,I HAVE HAD 3 CLAIMS AND RECEIVED BOTH PURCHASE PRICE AND SHIPPING COSTS AND DID NOT HAVE TO SEND THE ITEM BACK,ANOTHER THING IS TO WATCH ANY SELLERS FROM USA AND THE UK AS EBAY HAS INCLUDED A FORWARDING AGENT/COMPANY CALLED "PITNEY BOWES INC"WHEN YOU SEE THIS NAME IN THE DESCRIPTION YOU HAVE TO PAY,THE SELLERS SHIPPING COSTS AND ALSO THE PITNEY BOWES SHIPPING ALSO WHICH CAN BE UP TO 3 TIMES THE COSTS, AN EXAMPLE I HAVE JUST FOUND 1 DVD FOR (USED) USD $0.75 CENTS PITNEY BOWES SHIPPING TO AUSTRALIA WAS $27.18 THAT IS MORE THAN YOU WOULD PAY FOR A NEW DVD AT SANITY,JUST SEARCH THE ITEM FULLY IN EBAY BEFORE YOU BUY,BEST OF LUCK

    • I have found pitney bowes shipping not too bad priced and then other items way up there in price.
But to be honest i have had items sent from sellers with there own shipping and thats been as much or more.
I have had items sent with pitney very fast not not so with sellers own.
And sometimes its handy to have it as not all seller offer international shipping.
While back i did get a couple of things from usa for kids xmas and most did not ship here.
Shipping was on the high side but they where large and at the time i read so many neg feedback about them unpacking items the seller used to send cheaper.
But to be honest i have never experienced this.
If something was 75c and shipping was $20 plus i simple just move on.
Just depends really what it is your buying etc.
But i cant fault them so far.
My issue with this item seller made error on what they used to send it in.
