What Gaming Keyboard Do You Use and Why?

I'm looking to buy a new keyboard after my Logitech G910 bit the dust recently. I'm not fussy about brand but I want something solid (I can be rough when gaming), RGB, mechanical, with G (macro) keys, and it needs to be wired. Media keys are a nice bonus.

What are OzBargainers using and why did you choose it? Are you happy with it and if you could get a new keyboard what would you go with?

I mostly play WoW and Overwatch but also play loads of other games casually like the Assassin's Creed franchise, Mass Effect games… a bit of everything really. WoW is the one I spend the most time on tho.

Just want to get some ideas of what people like before I commit to a new one. :)

  • Corsair Gaming K65 RGB Rapidfire Mech Keyboard Cherry MX Speed

I chose this over the larger K70 cause i like that it's smaller so that my hands are not so far apart.

If i could get a new keyboard i would get the exact same one either the MX speed or MX reds either is fine.

thought Logitech new keyboard certainly looks very nice imo, http://gaming.logitech.com/en-au/product/pro-gaming-keyboard .

  • Ive got this https://ebgames.com.au/pc-205077-Razer-Blackwidow-Chroma-Key…
I hardly game and if I do its a crappy simulation game. The leds drew me to it :P
But owning it for a few years a lot of the leds are either on their way out or out.
    I wouldnt recommend.

  • This one when it was on sale still goin hard

  • Corsair K70

Cherry MX red are my favourite switches due to their responsive feel, it's loud but not loud enough to be annoying, especially if you have headphones on. Would recommend.

  • I'm using a Aorus (Gigabyte's gaming/enthusiast brand) K7 Thunder.

The K7 is a Cherry MX Red, blue illuminated keyboard with mouse wheels to adjust brightness and PC main volume. It's small but pleasingly chunky and feels very strong. It has a super thick braided cord but no USB ports.

The K7's claim to fame is it's 20 key so called "macro pad" which is a detachable non-standard layout number pad. The macro pad can store 100 macros (+ the normal number pad functions of course) and is easy to program and setup provided you read the manual. The macro editor is good if a bit on the ugly side but it can do mouse clicks and pretty much anything you may need for macros.

It can be attached to either side of the main TKL (tenkeyless) keyboard or be used seperately using an additional USB cord. The macros are stored on the device which means no need to run software to use it \o/

The bad news about the macro pad is it disconnects much too often if it's attached to the TKL keyboard - much too much for me too recommend it if you want it attached, it just doesn't work unless maybe you never move your keyboard. I move my keyboard a lot and if you are OCD it will drive you bananas.

However I use it plugged on the right hand side of my mouse which is excellent. It's annoying to me that the cord for the macropad is not even braided let alone as thick as the keyboard cord but that doesn't affect function i just like braided cords. If you want a mechanical number pad it's one of a very small number that can be bought.

The Gigabyte Aorus K3 is the K7 keyboard without the macro pad and can be had for as low as $65.

    I use this.

  • COrsair K70 with brown switches
    pros
    1) brown switches have a "just right" amount of clicky feedback whereas blues are too clicky, reds are too smooth
    2) sexy as
    3) nice thick braided cord that looks like it won't fray and it's not micro-usb crap that gets loose over time and falls out
    4) USB passthrough
    5) easy to clean - there's no side thing so a few sprays of compressed air and all teh dust is gone
    6) RGB
    7) additional grippy replacement keys (WASD or QWEASD) for the super-hardcore-gamer that you know you are
    8) tilt adjustment front and back so you can have all sorts of angles
    9) separate media keys (i.e. not part of F1/F2/F3/F4)

    cons
    1) HAVE to install additoinal corsair software if you want any RGB customisation. software isn't very userfriendly.
    2) $$$
    3) shiiett i just read you want macro keys and k70 ain't got none. Guess that's a dealbreaker. ah well still excellent keyboard for anyone else who doesn't need macros

    K70 with cherry mx blue.
i have one at work and at home.

  • I was eyeing off the Corsair Gaming K95 RGB PLATINUM today at JB Hi-Fi but it's $350 and I don't think I want to spend that much tbh. The Corsairs are a nice bunch of keyboards tho. Thanks for the suggestions. Checking them all out to see if anything suits. :)

  • had a razor few years ago but it was all black with backlit keys which i could turn off and you cant see the letters.
i was mucking around on a game and i managed to turn off the backlight but now i cant remember how to turn it back on so it site to the side and im using my old dell thin profile keyboard that works well.

for value for money I would steering way clear of corsair/razer/logitech

    coolermaster/ducky/vortex is where its at

    • -1

"value of money", Cooler Master. lol
Corsair and Logitech have been in the game way longer than Cooler Master

      • logitech/corsair/razer use non standard bottom rows and and are often overpriced

In addition razer and logitech dont even use genuine cherry switches anymore

You can make your own decision based on "whos been in the game"

      • IMO Corsair and Logitech make terrible keyboards.

I prefer Filco for Cherry switches, can't do better.
CoolerMaster are my goto keyboard for cheap Cherry switches.

  • Corsair K70. Anyone who says it's a "terrible keyboard" is horribly misinformed.

  • Further to the original question, does anyone have any cheap recommendations?

I've got a Logitech MK710 which despite being an apparent best seller is one of the laggiest, rubbish combos I've ever used. My no-frills Officeworks mouse/keyboards work better than Logitech's set, so an affordable and functional replacement would be great.

  • I've still got the Logitech g510
Non mechanical, basic backlit and That trusty led display that stopped working.

No signs of breaking so should last a few more years I'm hoping!

    • I've actually got one in storage as a backup keyboard in case I'm completely without other options. Still working perfectly (LCD and all) too.

  • Something else I've noticed when playing Overwatch… the Space bar is the default jump button but on the G910 there seems to be a slight delay between pressing the key and the action occurring. By slight I mean milliseconds but it is pretty noticeable when I play certain heroes (Lucio in particular). My laptop with one of those flat keyboards actually responds better for this particular hero/action.

Just wondering what switches would be best suited to me based on this information? I don't want to go back to a membrane kb but I'm not sure if Cherry Reds are what I'm after either. I've read about the red/brown/blue comparison but it's really hard to actually imagine which is best for me without testing them myself. In your opinion, what mechanical switch is most like membrane? Don't worry, I've Googled it but once again I like people's opinions rather than reviews that may or may not be completely honest. :)

  • I had a razer blackwidow ultimate with MX blues, but that died so I am now using a Ducky shine with MX browns. Great keyboard.

I'm finding the brown switches a log better for gaming.
