How Do You Trust a Business or Buyer Solicitor?

I'm looking for a buyer solicitor and found one on Google with cheap price, they have a com.au website with ABN but is that enough?
I've never done this before and planning to put huge deposit in, feel a bit insecure.
Should I be paying by cheque or deposit? What are your countermeasures? Thanks

Check the Law Society in your state.

    • Thanks! just what i needed.

  • Take this advice - trust no one!

I agree with the first poster though. Also search the hell out of them online via a few different search engines. If you are going to contact them go to the whitepages.com.au - don't contact them from the 'number' listed in the search engine.

Otherwise go to the law society in your state to check that they are legit.

In fact I'd just go straight to the law society in your state or territory for a recommendation of a lawyer / solicitor.

I wouldn't trust a google search for something so important of a property purchase for love nor money.

Ask around your friends, family, work colleagues etc., I'd trust word of mouth any day before I trusted an online search.

      Good tip.
She is listed on the Law Society website but I will make sure I contact them via that the info listed on the law society website.

  • You get what you pay for - if they are one of the cheapest (eg. those that advertise based on price), their service will generally not be as good/thorough/etc. This is not to say they won't do the job, more to do with how much attention each client gets.

A house is very likely the most expensive thing you will ever buy, so spending a bit more on a well-known or recommended solicitor makes sense.

My suggestion is to try and talk to the person who will actually be looking after your matter, to make sure you are comfortable with and confident in them.
