Best Discount for a MacBook Pro? (Student)

I was wondering if anyone knows of the best student discount lying around to get a MacBook Pro.

Yes, before some Windows and Linux fanboys attack, I do have have a beefy Windows/Linux dual boot, however I am stepping into iOS dev and unfortunately Apple keeps their development closed off to Apple devices only.

So far I know of the following discounts for the 2016 MBP 13 inch (original price $2199.00):
- Standard Apple EDU pricing is barely a discount - $2129.00.
- Student Edge / StudentVIP - $2086.70.
- [REFURBISHED] Apple refurbished - $1859.00. (Risks of a refurb?)
- [Thanks holdenmg] Officeworks - $2047.00
- [Thanks LaScrooge] iFrog - $1939.91 (can pricebeat for 5% off at OW)

I was wondering if anyone knows anywhere else where you'd be able to get good discounts for a MBP. Potentially a general licenced retailer like JBHIFI would give discounts too?

  • Just wait for the returb. They have the same warranty as new and you can get AppleCare for it too.

Should wait to see if any new models are announced at WWDC in a few weeks, or if there will be a price drop.

  • Tbh, just install MacOS on a intel based laptop. Did it last week on a probook and its stable and fine.

Easiest guide when you don't have a mac: http://www.wikigain.com/create-macos-sierra-bootable-usb-ins…

My mother in law spilt tea on the keyboard of my partners mac, destroyed it, but in all seriousness a relative just had a probook just sitting around, and its specs were pretty much exactly the same

    • I did not know that a Hackintosh would have been that easy. I woll look into this later. Thanks for the tip though!

      • Yeah there's tonne of forums with info and an abundance of kext (driver) development and porting

  • Seeing you are a student, is it not worth purchasing a second hand MBP? maybe 2015 edition (to avoid all the USB-C issues and having to buy adapters and shit?).
I'd buy new if you were working (and can claim as work expense), but a second hand MBP might be a better option.

  • WWDC is around the corner. There could be updates to the newer kaby lake CPUs in the Macbook line which can bring down the prices for the current line if you're willing to wait. June 5-9 (early morning June 6 Aus time I think).

Refurbs from Apple are another great way to get cheap - its basically sold like a brand new Macbook but they can't tag it as brand new since its a returned/faulty item. They get fixed and tested properly and come with the same standard 1 year Apple care warranty in which you can extend. Only problem with refurbs are the stock and availability. You cannot customise them with more RAM/SSD storage like buying brand new. There's refurbs of the current line available.

  • Hi,

  • You could always price match iFrog through Officeworks.

    iFrog is 1939.91 inc shipping.

    -5% at Officeworks = 1842.92

You won't get lower than that as pricing never drops more than 10 percent from RRP generally unless it's clearance.

That price above is getting close to a 20 percent discount from RRP.

I don't think you'd find better for new or local stock. Margins on Apple are thin.

    • Any reason why iFrog is so cheap? They seem to be authorised retailers so it would mean their stock is legit from Australia as well.

And would OW price beat it even though iFrog are an online store (since I'm in NSW)

      • iFrog is a legitimate authorised reseller.

They just always price lower for all Apple products.

I price matched myself, and they do have a store in Queensland under the name Queensland Computers.

Officeworks will take in to account postage which I factored in to the pricing above.

  • LOL make friends with someone who works for apple and get the employee discount. That was what I did… though we had been friends for years prior. (; 😜

    • Where do I find this 'friend' think you speak of? I am studying Software Engineering, don't think i have time for that :(

    • Whats an apple staff discount these days?
