Video Camera for Dog While We're out (Howling)

Good morning
TLDR- we think our 11 month old dog is howling and screaming when she thinks she's alone, please recommend a camera (with audio) so we can check

I live in a townhouse with the wife and 2 roommates, we have an 11 month old pup.
She's always been quite a whinger (and always sleeps downstairs alone), but yesterday my roommate was upstairs and our pup was wandering through the house and howling and pretty much holwing and screaming so loud you'd think it would be painful. She recorded this to show us.
We are under the impression that the pup was doing it because she thought noone was home and was lonely. When the roommate came downstairs to make sure she wasn't in pain, they made eye contact, the roommate went back upstairs and the dog stopped, did a couple of usual whimpers and settled down.

With 4 uni students there is usually someone coming in and out during the day, we have never noticed this before but obviously she might do it only when we are out. This is the same howl she did as a baby when we left her to sleep downstairs, she did it once recently when we locked her outside when we had guests and stopped.

In addition to advice about this issue^, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a cheap video camera with audio, so that we can hear if she is doing it while we are out.

Thanks

Can't you just leave the house for 1 hour with your phone recording? Saves you buying a camera just for that purpose. Or borrow one from a friend? Even a point and shoot would work?

    Or laptop webcam?

Even just an audio recording would be enough I would think.

That's why I'm doing something about it… If you don't have something constructive to say, don't bother.
Both our neighbors love our dog and their kids often come over to play with her.

I'll ask the obvious….have you asked the neighbours?

  • what dog is it?

        my fav after golden retrievers

        • They are a fantastic breed
          , you're right
We certainly made a good choice

they made eye contact, the roommate went back upstairs and the dog stopped, did a couple of usual whimpers and settled down.

Sounds like the dog was singing because she thought she was alone but then got embarrassed when she realised she wasn't.

    • Wouldn't surprise me at all lol

I have a couple of these cameras:

    https://www.banggood.com/VStarcam-C7824WIP-720P-Wireless-IP-…

They are cheap, the video quality is good and it's PTZ which means you can move it around remotely rather than just pointing it in one place. You will also need a microSD card to store the recordings.

This one also seems to get good reviews and is a bit cheaper, but I don't have personal experience with it and it's fixed, so you can't move it around:

Also, because these are from banggood postage can be hit and miss and it can take some time to arrive. Hope that helps.

    • I have one very similar to the 1st link to keep an eye on our 2 mini sausage dogs in an apartment. It's a streaming web cam with 2 way voice and night vision. Mostly works for our anxious pets.

    • have the xiaomi….. pretty good for the price….. and is definitely not fixed….. once connected to wi fi, you can put it where you want…. can attach to power bank if no leccy supply near….
      Has 2 way audio

      • I meant you can't look around with it remotely once you put it where you want ;)

        • ahh….. it's a pretty wide angle lens though….

    • Just wondering if I would be able to use one of these to check on my home from overseas? Thanks.

  • What you might want to look into is something that connects via the internet, with appropriate security, so you can talk back to the dog as well. Other options might be to leave the radio or TV on, so it can hear the sounds of voices when you aren't there. The poor dog is probably lonely for company. Personally I think dogs should have another dog as a companion, but I can understand that might not be an option.

  • Sounds like the dog is lonely. Is it getting lots of exercise and human attention regularly?

    • And possibly has a bit of separation anxiety

    • Walks at least once a day and she's very much an inside dog hanging on the couch when we are home
Can't get a second dog for company for a few months when we move

  • Any of the dlink cloud cameras from jb hifi will do the trick, and no need to wait for postage. Easy to set up, good app for ios and android and can be streamed using any web browser. All include sound I'm pretty sure.

  • My recommendation, get an anti-bark collar. There are 3 different types and if you contact a decent supplier they will advise best type. Worked wonders for our young dog ….

    • How can a collar stop a dog from barking?

      http://kb.rspca.org.au/Should-I-use-an-anti-barking-collar-t…

Doesn't sound like the sort of thing you would want to do to a creature that you love

    • She actaully never barks at all, except this one problem. I think I will try other measures before resorting to an antibark collar
      Thanks

    • Please do not recommend vile torture devices be used on an animal's neck. These things are cruel and barbaric.

  • My friends use their iPad and MacBook to make a live stream to their phones. They talk to their dogs through it too. Sorry I don't know which software they use

  • My niece had a rescue dog with seperation anxiety issues. It came back when she moved and we were visiting just after the move. When were out to dinner, we saw it in action. She used an iPad and could see what Nova was doing at any time. She could also talk to her at any time to settle her. I could ask her what she was using. There may be an app or perhaps there was something in her bark collar that there was an app for.

My first thought from your title was that your hobby is going out in the evenings to howl. :)

  • Separation anxiety. The pup does not want to be alone. You don't need to video it; you need to fix it.

    • Fix it… I want to see if that's what it is…
I've spoken with both neighbours who say they've never heard it so I want to be sure
