Buying a High Capacity Micro SDXC Card

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knew of any retailers with decent aus stock/shipping times that would do 256 gb micro sdxc cards? Looking for the typical class 10, UHS-1 like the Samsung evo cards. I have used shopping square before and figured everything's arrived and looked genuine. I'm stumped though - why is this 128 gb evo $55 yet anything comparable on google is in the $130+ range e.g. officeworks, amazon etc.

I've never had problems with their cheap Samsung cards before but this makes me wonder? Are shopping square genuine?

More importantly - does anyone have suggestions of a 256 gb (I see there are some 200 gb options online by Lexar and pny) micro sd card? And retailer wise?

I've found it difficult to find anything. Even shopping square's 256gb sandisk and the evo+ (step up to evo) start at $179. So big price jump that I can't justify…

Or is my best bet sticking with shopping square - given $55 isn't too much for a 128 gb card. Still concerned as to why the pricing is so much cheaper than other retailers selling the same micro sdxc cards?

  • It's not that shopping square is cheap, it's that officeworks/HN etc is expensive. For example, if you check out staticice you will find most computer sellers have them for a similar price to shopping square.

Amazon is usually about the same as ebay (and ergo shopping square). I am surprised that you found them to be the same as officeworks.

If 128gb is sufficient then it is much better value than 256gb. The Toshiba exceria range of micro SDs are also great value and have a better minimum write speed than the normal Samsung Evo.

    • I hadn't used Toshiba before - but how is the reliability of a standard class 10? Just need to have no everyday use lag in accessing apps, photos, videos, recording these onto card etc - so I assume class 10 is sufficient.

But if the Toshiba is better value I can check it out. You are right, it appears 256gb is proportionately more expensive. Back when I got my 64 gb evo 1-2 years ago it was circa around thie $55-65 price too, now I'm buying double that capacity for the same price. One day the 256gb might be down too…

Well that's comforting that this price is the norm. I thought it was too good to be true and that somehow despite my checks once I received the cards I was getting jipped.

  • MSY has the Samsung Evo 128Gb for $59. They're good bunch for buying cheap components but their customer service can be hit or miss. They have shops in most states for easy returns/exchanges. They also have Sandisk Ultra 200Gb for $119. The Sandisk ultra's 128GB have different speeds which is why their different prices.

I've also bought from PC Byte Online. I got faulty Plantronics Backbeats but called them and went to their base in Newington and happily exchanged a new pair.
They also have the Sandisk Ultra 200GB for roughly $118 or Lexar 200GB for $139.

I don't know much about shopping square. I always get it confused with Shopping Express.

    • Thanks. So are you saying the sandisk ultra 128gb is faster or the 200gb is a faster class 10?

$119 is alright.. for 200gb. better than the $179 for 256 gb versions of sandisk and the evo+ samsungs off shopping square. MSY would also be local in WA (where I'm based) so I wouldn't have to wait for shipping I guess. ANd instore warranty/return if any faults would be a positive?

Haven't bought from PC Byte online though.

Between a Sandisk ultra 200gb for $118-119 (PC BYte / MSY) and the Lexar, which is the better brand? I assume all are minimum class 10s and will be as same specs as the Samsung Evo's? Who is Lexar owned by as I don't know much about them?

      • sorry might of confused you a bit there. MSY has 2 different sandisk ultra 128GBs. $69 and $74 - they are different read speeds 30MB/s vs 80MB/s. Big differnce for $5 which kind of confused me too, but I'd go with the more faster one at $74 between those two.

Now the differences between the SanDisk 128GB and 200GB, speeds are not that much faster according to specs in Read speeds 80MB/s vs 90MB/s. You really won't be able to tell the difference - devices can also have an impact on this which is why its not that noticeable. Main difference is capacity.

BUT if you really want faster speeds you should buy the higher models like Extreme, Extreme Pro for SanDisk or Pro or Pro+ line for Samsung.

        • Thanks. I wasnt aware ultra came in two speeds? I thougut ultra was around 80-90mb/s read speed as a base and write in reality is closer to 15mb/s correct?

I had previously used just a 64 gb samsung evo in my xperia z3 and found videos and photos etc recorded fine, no such issues with lag per se.

So i was hoping to get a large capacity to suit the new samsung s8+ i got. Would the ultra 200gb being 90mb/s read be equivalenr to the samsung evo? I've never used the high capacity sandisks so i could only vouch for samsung and was abit worried outlaying the $119 on msy for their 200gb.

Unfortunately samsung only go from 128gb evo to 256gb in the evo+ range and prives jump insanely to around 180. Same for other brands in their 256 gb cards. So next best affordability seemed to be in the 200gb cards which it appears only sandisk ultras do plus lexar and pny?

On another note re: MSY i missed their short sat opening hours to pickup. If i order online for delivery will i be able to return instore if any faults?

  • +1

I've had bad experience with Shopping Square with a fake Samsung micro sd card, and having trouble getting a refund.

Go with PC Byte, I went there instead and got genuine product.

  • Amazon. I went with the SanDisk Ultra 200gb but the 128gb is best value but honestly you only pay a tiny little bit. The extra $ for the 200gb is much better than the extra $ for the 256gb imho.
