Apple TV with 160GB Drive (Just Superseded) $199 Free Shipping from Apple

Apple TV with 160GB drive (just superseded) $199 free shipping from Apple. The new Apple TV is out and its only $129, so why is this a bargain? Well this model was $329 I think, it contains a 160 GB hard drive and does 1080i that the new model does not. Yes there are better media players out there (though not more attractive ones) and most of them come with cables (my bugbear) but if your looking for an Apple solution then this is a good price I think. Having said that I am an Apple fanboy and I chose a WDTV a couple of years ago. You can mod it for more functionality as well.

  • Very nice unit with XBMC installed.

  • HD can be upgraded however it is a PATA interface so 500GB is biggest option at present.

    • +2

PATA! When was it superseded? 2005?

    • I believe the HDD is IDE, therefore the largest is 320GB

  • Neat little box, but is it really worth even $200!

Can you setup a USB hub, and run a TV tuner/external HDD off these with XBMC?

  • too bad it cant playback 1080p

    • +1

It can play full 1080p; you just need to purchase a BCM70015 or BCM70012 card and install it in place of the wireless card.

And then run the linux ATV image which can be found at
      http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?f=56

logicsupply.com sells the genuine bcm70015 card too.

I'm personally trying to buy a few of the ATV second hand from craigslist in the US and get them sent over.

      sfbay.craigslist.org

I just missed out on a 160gb this morning for $50 USD.

      • negative votes; reason?;
man there are some tossers on this site

        • Well, you probably lost a lot of people at "you just need to purchase", in order for this product to perform a fairly routine task for most media boxes! ;)

A lot of us would tend to think that buying something, only to have to upgrade the hardware AND softmod the hell out of it to make it do what many cheaper boxes will do out of the box, would be the mark of somebody tossing something themselves! :p

And yeah, I always man up to my negs, one was me…you're trying too hard to sell the "advantages" of this, when quite frankly there are few…unless you're a fanboy! :p

          • @StewBalls: mshannon gives information. I wouldn't do it, very few would but it's nice to know that it can be done. He gave the part names and even a link.
You are free to neg though- but I disagree with you. Information like this is useful for some.
Btw, this comment, "Well, you probably lost a lot of people at “you just need to purchase” "- means not "a lot of people" but you and 1 other negger definitely.
Anyway not being critical, just I appreciate the info mshannon.

            • @Bargain Seeker: Well, 728 clicks and 4 +ve's means a lot of folks didn't really find many redeeming features in this deal, now doesn't it? Those numbers also mean not everybody votes or comments either!

Fair point about the info, but we all contribute from time to time; sometimes we're lauded, sometimes pummelled; deal with it! ;)

Now, you tell me, since you haven't +ve'd the deal yourself; do you think it's acceptable to effectively negate a valid comment too bad it cant playback 1080p, by suggesting expensive, time consuming, convoluted ways to eventually do it; no, of course not!

The simple answer is NO, as sold this device cannot play 1080p content!!! At least I was honest! :p

        • I plus vote you. Don't know why you would be negged. Honestly you give a solution to a problem. Some people are bored but your information is helpful, just so you know.

  • can it play mkv?

    • yes with the XBMC software installed. You get 720p max resolution using the native ATV build; You can get full 1080p running the 'CrystalBuntu' (aka Ubuntu Linux on ATV) build.

      • +1 Correct. I bought the Crystal HD decoder and found it would only output at 720p and the 1080 playback was choppy at best. Don't waste your time with this unit if you want a media player, your better off with WD TV live.

      • Once again thanks for the info.

  • +1

    WD TV Live HD ftw!

If you hack your Apple TV, you void your warranty.

    • +1

Can you name a device whose warranty is NOT voided by hacking?

      • +1

Mores the reasons to buy a media player that doesn't need to be hacked in order to support popular media formats, and HD resolutions.

        • I agree- although for some hacking the appletv is cool as it's sooo pretty. WDTV is functional and that's it. Won't win a design award

    • Apart from warranty, how is this with Boxee or XBMC not better than WDTV?

    • And if you restore it back- what then? If you restore a jailbroken iPhone back- what then?
Then it's all fine. Easy as that.

      • What then is if you brick it…I know where Apple will tell you to go mate when you want it fixed! ;)

  • My local JB HiFi (Werribee, VIC) had one for about $198.

  • Bought one from JB HiFi for $185. Just corner a floor staff and demand a further discount!

    • Can you post a copy of the receipt? Cheers.
