Wiki Suggestion for Union Shopper (Shopping Service) ?

hi folks, thought i'd put this to the forum for feedback/comments…

is there merit for a wiki page on the union shopper service? probably under "other pages". i don't know how well known this service is (a search shows that the only mention of it on ozb so far has come from me), so for those not familiar with union shopper, there's a summary (on my blog) at http://quop.blogspot.com/2009/12/union-shopper-united-we-sav…

more info is available on their website, most of which is only available to members, but there's some public info:
http://www.unionshopper.com.au/whatwedo.html
http://www.unionshopper.com.au/FAQelig.html

my reasons for putting forward this suggestions are essentially that this is another way that people might be able to save, especially when you know for sure you are going to buy something specific, and want to try to get it for as low a price as possible (and certainly not pay the normal retail price).

limitations would be that you need to be a member or know a member willing to help you, and it's not available for any/every type of purchase (but does cover a fair range).

if it's a goer, content wise i'd be thinking a copy paste of the info in my blog entry would be a decent starting point?

  • Hi quop, how much cheaper is the price in unionshopper?
For example, do they have woolies gift cards? How much are they selling those cards (incl. delivery)?

afaik, prices from unionshopper are not fixed $ or %. basically once you decide on what you want to buy,
    - you contact unionshopper with details like make/model/best price you've found/store details
    - they request quotes from their supplier network for this item
    - they then get back to you with the best prices based on the responses from the network.
so the actual prices will probably differ from request to request, though i would expect the variance to be small. based on my own experiences in the past (5-10 years of sporadic use) it's not unusual to save at least $50-100 on whitegoods compared to the best prices i have been able to find myself. i helped a friend buy some stuff for his new home recently, so here are some real life figures:
    - FRIDGE - fisher & paykel E522BRX stainless steel. the best price he found was $1800 from a Good Guys store. union shopper got it for $1624, saving $176.
    - WASHING MACHINE - fisher & paykel GW712. the best price he found was $830 from Good Guys. union shopper got it for $684, saving $146.
    - MICROWAVE - samsung ME6124ST stainless steel. the best price he found was $282 from Good Guys. union shopper got it for $229, saving $53.

yes they do have woolies (minimum $50) as well as coles (minimum $100) gifts cards - both are 5% off. postage is $4.50 by registered mail (coverage up to $100, extra cover/insurance can be purchased at $1.30/$100), so it's probably not worth the effort unless you're going to be buying several $100s worth at a time. IIRC the entertainment book gives you 5% off coles gifts cards and it's free shipping - don't think they have woolies gift cards though.
