What is the most you'll pay for your favourite foods?

I personally love all kinds of berries and try to include them in my diet on a daily basis. But there comes a point when the price of the particular berries is so exorbitant that my desire to eat them is significantly outweighed by my desire not to be extortingly ripped off. Like paying $7 dollars for a punnet of strawberries is too much for me. Today I paid $6 for the punnet and that's where I draw the line.

Avocados are a great example. Sometimes they can go up to $5 a pop. And it is simply not affordable to like avocados at that stage.

What is your limit?

I hope you are referring to the 1kg punnets they sell at Woolworths which should drop price very soon.

My local Woolies does a cool thing were for $2.85 you can fill in as much fruit, vegetables and herbs (from a selection of tubs) into a plastic bag. Other than that the fruit and vegetables that are on specials at Woolworths and Braidwood Farmers' Markets. What are you guys doing paying ridiculous prices for berries and asparagus?

    • +1

I've never seen Woolies doing this magic $2.85 all-you-can-fit-bag

      • +1

Yes you haven't. Its theft and they don't advertise it.

      • +1

In my area its $2 to fill a bag when they're having a clear-out.

  • Asparagus was $3.50 a bunch today…bit much for me!

We eat 3 or 4 bunches a week. I just can't justify that for vegetables.

  • 15 bucks a kilo

My favourite food is popcorn. Back in my day, Riviana popping corn was around 90 cents a bag or something. Then they "improved" the packaging and doubled the price. It was a sad day. It hurts my heart everytime I buy a bag now. Not sure what my limit will be, but hopefully I won't have to find out.

tl;dr I pay about 100% more for my favourite food currently.

    • +4

Are you living in my house?
We still call up the Riviana answering machine occasionally on weekends to remind them we remain disgusted at that price rise.
1800 814 800 if you also want to complain.

      • Do you also buy 6 bags at once and get weird/confused looks from people (especially children) at the checkout? It's bordering on unhealthy for me. My wife is supportive, but worried I will pass on my obsession to my daughter.

    • Buy it online in bulk?

    • The Colonial fruit and veg place at Chadstone was having a deal on popcorn today - if you are in Melbourne might be worth a phone call.

  • I do not exceed $1 per 100g for chocolate and chocolate covered items. I only break that rule for my wife's specific favourites. Instant coffee $4 per 100g; "proper" 100% Arabica coffee (beans or ground) $8 per kg; non-chocolate biscuits $5 per kg.

  • I am weird.. I can sometimes spend $25 on McDonald's in one sitting for one or two years which I just did then but I can't pay more than $5 a pizza at dominos.. go figure.. and when I go to get a pork roll its always two not one unless I am very full.. I am weird.

Potatoes no more than $1.50 / kg

Soft drinks always home brand no difference to me in fact I prefer the taste..

I've cream I can spend a little more just a bit above home brand but woolies and coles salted caramel cheapest price is really good recently nearly on par with connoisseur.

    • LA Ice Cola is nice, i agree!

      • Damn right son! Love the alternative brands they are pretty nice.

  • love the macas $2 chicken n cheese

I pay whatever it costs to get good quality fresh food, on the flipside i pay no money for fast food like dominoes and mcdonalds, so it evens out.

    • +1

except often fast food is cheaper than eating good quality fresh food =/ how warped our world is

  • $3, cheese burger, small fires and a coke

  • I bought a rural property that has a patch of blackberry that I initially thought was a problem until berry season, now it's magic.

While we were visiting Ellenbrook, a far north eastern suburb of Perth 35km from our place, a few months ago we found a store that sold JC's Golden Raisins. They don't look anything like small, black standard raisins. They are larger than sultanas, sweet, juicy and golden. We have sultanas and cranberries in our breakfast porridge so we bought a couple of packets.

When they ran out we made a special 70km return trip to Ellenbrook to buy more.

Sanity then prevailed and last week I contacted JC's. They gave me the address of a place 10km from our home where they said we could get them. When I checked out the address in StreetView I saw that it was a house. I phoned the number they have given me and the guy who answered told me it was his home address. He was the state distributor. He gave me the names of three places near us where he said we could get them. We have visited all of them and they don't have, and have never had, them.

I haven't got around to contacting the distributor guy yet but I'm not sure it's going to do any good if he doesn't know who stocks his product.

As you can see we have spent a lot of money, time and effort to try and buy our favourite food.

Inside my head I have a maximum price that I would pay for anything and everything. I know what is a good price for any food and don't go over it. You're not going to starve with all the specials every shop has!

    • Well put.

  • +1

I said I wouldn't pay more than $1.84 for cheddar grainwaves (half price special), but then the other week it was $2 (half price special), so they have upped the price now and this doesn't make me happy either.
