Thanks. Been another huge day and ready to hit the sack. Alcatraz tomorrow :)

      • +2

Quick Alcatraz tip, a lot of the scenes from The Rock were NOT actually filmed there! [Much to my disappointment when I asked where the shower scene was shot. :(]

        • [Much to my disappointment when I asked where the shower scene was shot. :(]

plus, the prisoners had a gift shop… so it cant have been all that bad back then ;)

Enjoy TA! Hope you have some good weather. Don't forget to take the ever popular photo just as you are under the bridge!

  • does $45 velocity price apply for multiple SIMs under the one account, or just the first?

also, after 12 months, where does the plan revert back to? ($60/MONTH), or will it keep at $45/mth/service?

    • +1

I would like to know this as well before I jump on the deal. seems like a really good deal :)

I managed to resist jumping on when it was advertised last time but seeing it again I'm tempted as usual.

Main thing for me is "plan price creep" for me, as I used to be on $30/4GB for a long while, then finally hopping on the $40/10GB with rollover. So this is an extra $5 on top, plus contracted for 12months. 10GB with the rollover has been "just" enough for me. It's only the odd month here or there I've cut it close.

It's like $1 for eternal happiness … but I think I'd be happier buying $5 worth of useful junk monthly from AliEx instead lol

    • +3

$1 for eternal happiness… Or $2 for happiness for two eternities!! Bargain!!

No but yeah, same situation. I'm on $36/mo for 10GB with Optus, but this is tempting… Though I doubt I even need the extra data, so really it's $9/mo extra for nothing…

  • +2

I'm wondering whether to go for this or a $40/10GB Telstra deal.
I'm in Sydney, live in parramatta and travel to the city for work.

Is Telstra coverage/speed worth the sacrifice in GB?

    • +1

      What's the $40 for 10GB Telstra deal?

    • Yes.

    • Well both are plans, so neither are really that "great".
And the Telstra deal isn't Unlimited calls… but that doesn't affect most people.

I guess the Telstra deal is the better deal, because of reception.
Optus' LTE network is really competitive, but Telstra has longer coverage of 3G network when it runs out. Useful on road trips or hard to penetrate building/areas. Don't get me wrong 17GB's is huge, but so is 10GBs. And all my years the max I've ever used up was 7GBs in one month. I think for most people 8GB's, Optus' coverage, and 1,000 hours of calls will more than suffice. So if you want one of these "premium" offerings, it really depends on what you would like to do with it.

These 12GB monthly allowances make the 2GB allowance we've had from 4 years ago seem paltry.

I think in the year 2020, we should expect Unlimited plans for ~$60 with 100GB allowances. It'll make getting a home internet connection questionable, and make Netflix/YouTube more feasible on carrier data.

      • In Switzerland they have Unlimited Mobile Plans. My Niece is using about 50GB per month. Price is about $80/month.

        • France is doing way better: unlimited 4G (reduced speed after 100gb) for only 16euros a month + pretty much unlimited calls (national and international) - and great roaming options incl. (5GB incl e.g.) See detailed post below.

    • +1

Assuming you catch the train, I go along the same route and have a plan on the Optus network. There are quite a lot of dead spots on the train route to the city so it may be worth getting Telstra. Usually it's tolerable but if you get stuck in one spot it can be a bit shit.

Up to you as to whether the extra cost is worth it though.

      • +3

Hated this when I lived in Sydney. I'd see the channel 7 building near redfern and my 3G would drop to 0.

Really gets in the way when you're trying to be #2 in the world in mario kart

        ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

        • This is why I switched to Telstra (but I'm pretty sure Ashfield Station is a Telstra dead spot)

  • OP - I think the cashrewards cashback is only for new signups…

    • +1

There's nothing on their site that says it's for new customers only. Seems as long as you sign up for a new account each time, you should be right.

      • +1

But how can you sign up new account when you're an existing client just wanna upgrade the plan?

        • Spoke to their online chat - you can upgrade directly to the $50 plan with 17gb but the 10% velocity discount is only eligible for new contracts.

As an existing customer on the $40 plan i could either

          1. Upgrade to $50 p/m with no discount
          2. Payout existing contract and sign a new $50 12 mnth commitment with the 10$ velocity discount
        • @tokio: I've spoken to them online too, and they confirmed the 10% and 2GB bonus will apply to existing customers who upgrade. Perhaps it's because you're on a contract? ie. I wasnt on a contract when I upgraded during the last deal

        • @homersyd: Correct - my understanding is that if you upgrade you keep the commitment of your current contract. If I were to sign a new contract the 10% discount would be available but the payout for me wasn't worth it ~

I had 2x tracked CR for Virgin when I pre-ordered the S8+ on my existing account.

    • Does an existing Virgin Mobile customer qualify for the Cashback if they contract to this new plan?

  • Do they have unmetered streaming music (e.g. spotify)?

  • What does it take to become a Velocity member? Is it free?

EDIT: Never mind, found it (before someone posts a GIYF link): https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Joinfree/?gcli…

So yes, its a free membership.

    • Qantas Frequent Flyer ostensibly costs $89 to sign up but there is always a deal going somewhere that 'waives' this 'fee'. At least Velocity are up front about it.

      • +1

Qantas in the not to distant past (early 00's) charged a membership fee and didn't have free promotions. But when Woolworth introduced everyday rewards it became trivial to get it for free and it's been essentially free ever since. But at least the fee does have some historical basis (pity they've progressively made points almost worthless while making the program free).

    17gb per month?
Can't quite tell if it's that or for the whole 12 months. Based on the price its impossible if its per month, yet far too expensive if it's per year.

    • +3

      Yes, 17GB per month.

    • +1

It is $45 per month, 17GB per month.
      ($45 x 12 = $540)($540 - $50 = $490)($490 / 12 = $40.83)

Once you compare those rates and charges to some other countries, you'd be thinking: What a ripoff.

      • Then compare those rates and charges to other countries and you'd be thinking: Man, plans in the USA are really expensive.

        • See altomic's response below vvv

When I was in Vietnam recently I paid $13 for unlimited 4G internet for a month.

    • +5

But this isn't Vietnam and people here don't work for peanuts.

    • +4

As a comparison, I just paid US$75 + taxes for a one month unlimited SIM with T-Mobile. It's about as cheap as you'll find for unthrotled LTE in the States.

      • How are you finding the speeds/coverage of T-Mobile?

I'll be going to the States for 3 months later in the year.

I'm told the congestion gets pretty bad in the States because of unlimited.

Can you use past 30GB? Curious to see how bad the de-prioritisation is.

        • +3

Coverage has been awesome so far. Only time I had no coverage was for about 20km between Salinas & Santa Cruz on Hwy 1. Data speeds have been rock solid. Been watching the footy and uploading stacks of photos & videos to the cloud in no time at all. Can't fault it. One thing though, tethering another handset to it works, but the tethered handset is VERY slow indeed at both uploads and downloads. Not sure why?

        • +1

          @tightarse:

From what I understand, you have to pay an additional fee for LTE-speed tethering (up to a limit of 10GB/month) for another $5/month.

It used to be free, but the plan changed.

        • +2

@StrayfireX: Ah, so that's it! Thanks. Also, another option you may want to consider is Cricket Mobile. They resell AT&T and have a similar plan to T-Mobile for $60 with unlimited/unthrotled LTE. Catch is you need to pay a one-off $15 SIM fee, so $75 + taxes in the first month then $60 recharges.

        • +1

          @tightarse:

I looked into them, turns out Cricket is limited to 4Mbps on HSDPA+ and 8Mbps on LTE.

Now that you've told me coverage is pretty good, I'm probably going MetroPCS Unlimited + 10GB hotspot(T-Mobile) $60 (tax included) + $10 SIM.

          https://www.metropcs.com/shop/plans

          That or Mint SIM (T-Mobile) 10GB/month for 3 months: $60 + ~$8 (tax/post for NYC):

          https://www.mintsim.com/

        • @StrayfireX:

I would stay away from MetroPCS. We got their SIM during our trip few months ago and it was horrible. Threw it in the bin after 4 days and got T Mobile. This was in LA/SF.

          T-Mobile was quite good.

        • @zafayar:

That's really strange, MetroPCS is supposed to be a subsidary of T-Mobile and should be the same network.

Thanks! I'll probably follow TA on T-Mobile Unlimited then.

No country can beat India when it comes to mobile data plan prices. The data allowance there has moved from per month to per day. It started when India's wealthiest man launched a new network named JIO.

You can get 1GB data per day, unlimited SMS and calls, no national roaming for around Rupees333 or $7 per month. And under their "offer" which has been running since they launched in September last year you get the $7deal for 3 months.

Because of JIO, every other carrier had to cut their prices and offer daily data allowance.

      • meanwhile, the average monthly income in india is about $100/month, enuff to afford the $7 service fee for their mobile phone! bonus.

        • +1

I agree that it is relative to wages and cost of living etc but I also think the high prices we pay is due to the fact that we are such a large country which is sparsely populated outside the major cities. Hence it costs more to setup and maintain a network here than in other countries.

        • I don't know about India, but Indonesia (which is basically the same thing, right? /s) has some pretty terrible data speeds.

People always downloading rubbish in Indonesia…

That said I was paying $6 AUD for 12GB of data.

        • Source please ?

      • I think France is the one to beat - mobile.free.fr : for 16 euros/per month:
        - Unlimited domestic fix and mobile calls, unlimited mobile to USA, Canada, China and unlimited fix to 100 destinations
        - Unlimited SMS and MMS domestic
        - Unlimited FreeWifi at hotspots domestic
        - Unlimited 4G Data (reduced speed after 100Gb)
        - Roaming: Calls unlimited, SMS/MMS unlimited (domestic calls and to France) and 5GB data included for Europe, USA, South-Africa, Australia (!!), Canada, Israel, and NZ - all year long)

Great coverage - good network. This type of offerings is available since 4/5 years now and most French operators have followed.

      • Try France:

    • Thanks Charlie

  • Should I change from Telstra Freedom Plus to this? Currently pay $40 a month for 3GB, struggling and need more data. But I stream AFL (free subscription and data-free) plenty, and use the prepaid balance to subscribe to Google Play and Netflix. Pretty good value.

I do have a work mobile that's also on Telstra, which covers my AFL needs.

I'd just lose my "free" Netflix and Google Play if I go onto this plan. Google Play is data-free on this plan.

    Any advice guys??

Edit: Using Mi-Max, potential option for using second sim slot

Bring in $5 roaming like Vodafone and I'll switch. It is the one feature that Vodafone has got me staying with then.

  • this or Lebara's $16.8 for 5GB if not using much data ;)? so tempting with 17GB

  • Cashrewards can be very temperamental for these deals. I know others had their purchase tracked but I followed all the guidelines last time this deal was up and didn't get anything tracked at all. Don't count on the cashback when calculating your savings or you might be disappointed.

    • +2

Open a ticket via this link and as long as you have a clickout at time of purchase (My Account/Click History), the transaction will be added to your acct as pending while a query is raised with Virgin on your behalf. Also, please ensure Adblock is off before using CR :)

    • I fell like I should say that Cashrewards sorted this out for me after the ticket was raised.

  • Only very few companies offering unlimited International calls to 10 countries.
For now I will stick to Boost as it offers free calls to New Zealand on their $40 plan.

  • How's the porting process for Virgin?

I assume if I'm still with optus right now then it should be ok?

    • +2

      It's slow… Very slow.

Took me nearly 4 business days to port over from Optus.

Apparently, that's just the way it is moving from Optus to virgin.

Either then that I'm loving the huge data this plan offers and am going to sign up the misses tonight.

    • Port was near instantaneous from Telstra to virgin. I think it's easier to go between companies than transfer within them. Just get a $2 sim and port out and back in

    • +1

I ported from Optus to this Virgin deal last week. As stated, very slow. Took 3 days for me. If your in a rush maybe try porting to a $2 Telstra/Voda sim then to Virgin. Will be much quicker.

  • +1

How's virgins coverage? Years ago I got fed up with Vodafones coverage and went with Telstra even though it was $20/month dearer for the same plan. However I actually had coverage whereas before i didn't (I don't work in hugely remote areas but I'm outside roral cities by 40km)

    • It's exactly the same as Optus, with full access to all Optus infrastructure.

  • undeterred net flix?

    • Undeterred maybe. Unlimited, certainly not. But with 17gh is that really a big deal?

      • is it unmetered ? like the optus plans with an extra $10 a month.

        • No

  • Is Data rollover included?

  • Virgin's reception has been a bit choppy for me in the past.

If you're interested, the $50/month student package that Telstra offers (10 gig, $1000 calls, unlimited text) which is $40/month if you have a unidays account, can be had for $30/month if you're porting across from a different service provider (just speak to their online chat service and they'll arrange for the further $10/month to be credited back to your account).

  • Be sure to check your account, they didn't add music streaming to mine, wouldn't have known if I didn't check.
