Samsonite 72hours Cabin Spinner

It seems that Samsonite 72 hours bag is pretty popular among Ozbargainers. I'm currently looking for light cabin bag to travel, and it seems that Samsonite 72Hr is the lightest there is out there. So my question is whether this bag is durable? I have found several reviews that the bag have poor wheel quality which makes it not stable when you roll it.

If anyone have this particular bag, would you recommend it?

Cheers

  • I wouldnt want a bag that can be unlocked by a single finger.

Why would you even have a lock on carry on luggage anyway?
I travel with thousands of dollars of camera gear in my checked bags and have never locked them.

      • Because you dont lug your carry on bag around when you go out and play? Other than being on the plane, the bag will either be in the hotel, the bus, the hotel luggage room, in the cab, somewhere unattended while you are outside sightseeing.

Locks don't really help, given suitcases can be opened with a ballpoint pen.
          You're only inconveniencing yourself

        • @Drew22:

Well it is your choice. Locks act as a deterrent for any opportunistic petty thief as a last line of defence. If they have the full intention of taking stuff, the thief would be well prepared with the tools anyway.

But the point is, if you want to include a lock with the bag, at least make it a good one not just one for show.

        • @KaTst3R:

The only tool a thief would need is a pen!
I mean, if you're wanting to deter opportunistic thieves then a shitty lock that doesn't really work is as good as any lock really.

        • @Drew22:

So you are suggesting manufacturers shouldnt include any locks for all luggage?

        • @KaTst3R:

If they don't actually provide any protection, then yeah they shouldn't waste money including them.

    $150+ for a bag?!?!?

    for carry on.

considering you're limited to 7kgs for carry on then why would you even need something with wheels?

35.5L Duffle Gym Bag - Black $20.00 Kmart

    $150 - I've paid less for 2 return tickets Bris-Melb

    • Because I'm such a lazy person who don't want to carry around 7kg with me.

    • I have a nice brown leather duffle which was about $400, totally worth it.

    Ahh the Samsonite 72Hr 55cm Cabin Spinner @ 1.7Kgs
Have one. Love it. Highly highly recommended.

I've done over 200 segments in 3 years (plus a bunch of other travel in cars, trains and boats). Still looks good. Yes this is OzB and the discussion for carry on luggage usually goes something like this:

derr take a duffle bag: so cheap, so light
derr get a super cheap coke backpack for $1
derr take some shopping bags, get them free at coles, just buy things and return them, then keep the bags!
derr I don't have water connected at home, I lick leaves to collect water for free every morning

But none of these people understands the convenience of using a spinner in airports, makes travelling so so much easier. It's the lightest spinner around at 1.7Kgs, which is very important when some airlines are only giving you 5kgs now (China southern, Air China). You don't want to have most of your measly allowance used up by some hefty 3.5kg carry-on brick. It's a full pull up handle (not the stick with a knob type on the samsonite firelite), which means it takes an additional laptop bag on top easily. You can sometimes find it for $160-170, which is a bargain.

Also, ignore the crap about it being easy to unlock. etc
Firstly, the 55cm spinner DOES NOT COME WITH THE LOCK SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO. The zippers on the 55cm lock with loops on them, there is a combination lock that comes with the bag to put through the zippers or you can use your own. The picutres sometimes shown online (even on samsonite's own bloody website) are missleading, one of the other sizes comes with the pissy lock. I believe this is still the case, but I would check that the bag looks like this before buying
Secondly, it's carry on, so generally always with you.
Thirdly, any bag with a zip can be opened easily by a pro. It's a huge step up in weight and inconvenience for anything more secure.

Lets address the bad reviews on the 72 hours range. Most of these relate to the large sized bags in the 72 hours range. I think the criticisim is completley warrented because these are built super light and are probably painful in a large size for check in luggage. They'd be difficult to roll and wouldn't last.

    Some negatives:

    • There was an issue with the initial wheels it came with. They took a pounding when I had to check the bag in. Replaced them very cheaply myself and the replacement wheels were much stronger. I simply asked for wheels from a samsonite repairer. I think they were >$25 for the set. Samsonite repairer said they had modified the wheel design for newer models.
    • Handle is somewhat flimsy, but that's the trade-off for a 1.7kg spinner. You only really notice this when the bag is 10kgs and you've got a 5kg laptop bag ontop of it. Then it starts getting more difficult to control, but still better than trying to manage a 10kg duffel and 5kg laptop bag.
    • Wow, thank you so much for your review. Btw its 1.5kg not 1.7kg(Unless you're talking about real life weight of this bag which I don't know). However, I decided to go with a newer model Samsonite Uplite(https://www.samsonite.com.au/uplite-spl-55cm-spinner/80245-5…) which weighs 1.8Kg, its a little bit heavier but I really can't tell the difference. It has the same price like 72hours model with sturdier wheel, expandable size and come with in-built lock. I'm so happy with my purchase now.

      • Thanks for the uplite model suggestion, about to purchase 72hrs model but saw your comments and decided to choose the uplite model instead

  • My Antler is great. Very light, 4 wheel drive. As I only travel with 'cabin baggage' (Air Asia no check baggage costs) weight of case is of utmost importance. I know that it will not last forever, but as it is cabin baggage it is only handled by me and not Gorilla baggage staff, and so it should have reasonable durability.

  • I got their firelite in recent Myer sale and can't complain, a hard shell cabin @ 1.9kg is the best you can get.

    • Good for you mate. However its too expensive for me.

  • Family have a $20-30 no name hardshell carry on 4 wheel case from Kmart that has done 20-30 overseas flights as a mixed of hand luggage & checked luggage and its still in good nick.

I bought a cheapy hardshell carry on case in Europe for about $25 last trip, and despite checking it in for the last few flights, it still looks new. Even if it breaks/cracks/dies, big woop - its $25.

Spending $150 IMHO is excessive for a roller carry on case.

  • This one is so ugly, but all the beautiful cabin luggages for Samsonite are oversized. For example, COSMOLITE 3 55cm(40cm width)
