Would you pay more for a game that comes from a legit supplier?

Hi Bargainers,

Quick question and short story.

I'm setting up an online game store (more of a passion project than anything else at the moment) and I have a little question for the community that's been itching the back of my head for a few days.. Is there even a place for me in the marketplace ?

In short, many people shop from greyish stores like kinguin & g2a at a much cheaper price. Others only buy from places like steam and origin paying full price. If you could buy from a place that has legit games, pay a little more than kinguin but still less than steam prices, would you even consider it ?

Or am I running into a wall?

Thanks everyone in advance !

  • It sounds like you're talking about PC Games only, not consoles? Personally depends, I don't buy from Kinguin or g2a at all if I can help it, they're both very much seen as fairly dodgy in my eyes. If its a couple dollars more I'd definitely buy from a legit supplier do doubt.

Typically for me, I'd wait for a steam sale to come on, so thats usually a big thing to be able to beat. Besides a steam sale my usual journey is going to here: https://isthereanydeal.com/ checking out the sites on a games cheapest history and site to buy from.

  • +1

Honestly I think if you're more expensive than CD keys, you'd get negged to oblivion.

Just what I've seen that's all

    • True
If his site sold legit keys then that would be a step in right direction when compared to CD Keys

    • I agree, but I'm thinking more about repeat buyers. I'm able to beat CD keys on price for promotions and OB deals (with 0% and even negative margins) but the challenge for me lies with how many people would come back because they were happy with the process opposed to how many would never return until another OB promotion. As Azrael169 said, he only buys the cheapest, regardless of where it comes from.

I'm looking forward to see what more people comment about this but really for me is would you sacrifice a little on price knowing that it comes from a reliable source.

      :D

edit: jimbobaus Yep, looking at only legit keys. No dodgy stuff.

  • As a potential online game store you should be aware of niche markets; Steam traders are often more trustworthy and affordable - why bother with dodgy websites when you can skip the middleman?

    • Steam had changed the rules a little bit

While trades are still possible if there is too much of a price disparity between the two currencies (e.g you are Australian and you want to receive a Russian copy) steam will block that trade.

      Edit: reword my post

      • Wow, i'm particularly concerned about the Steam gift changes… they're really trying to kill the mass trading scene. Most of the bigger players left after the non-tradeable for 30 days nonsense was implemented.

        • yeah /r/SteamGameSwap/ just won't be the same ever again.

This won't affect the Cd key shops though, CD key are just like retail purchases, so Steam is still not going to do anything about people buying keys from distributors (yet).

  • As someone who has a massive steam library, price is the first, second and third consideration when it comes to buying games. I dont care how reputable the website is provided i get my key.

At one point in time i was even using a russian individual to buy games from the russian steam store and then gift them to me because they were so much cheaper (alot of games have since been region locked).
