American Express Bonuses not applicable to cardholders that have previously held products.

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

I applied for my first Credit Card as American Express Essential just to test out the waters. I always thought of applying for an Amex card with bonus points offer when I plan on travelling sometime in the near future. It looks like I will not be eligible for any of the bonus points since I went for the no fee one. Am I missing something or is this how it works?

Yes that's exactly how it works.

Although prior to mid April last month, it was actually possible to still get the bonus on the new card (if you had an existing or closed an Amex < 18 mths) by using a referral link for the new card. There are others who have done this in the past, and I know for a fact too as I did the same and got the points. At the time I had a Qantas Amex, and I used a referral link to get the Explorer. Got both bonuses no issues. I have since closed my Qantas Amex.

The loophole got fixed and they are now very strict (even forthe Charge card) with the bonuses on new cards.

    • But this would still work if my old AMEX was a Bank issued one right? I'm planning to cancel my ANZ credit card next month and make the switch

Yes, bank issued cards are exempt. My statement above only applies to amex issue cards.

      • AMEX Australia wouldn't consider your bank issued AMEX card against you. They only worry about what they've issued to you earlier.

        • Cool thanks! :)

The only one you can get the bonus points whilst being a previous card holder for is the David Jones one - it explicitly does not exclude previous card holders in it's bonus terms and conditions. Annual fee is $99 from memory and you get 21500 Qantas Points or 30000 Amex points on signup depending which points scheme you enrol into.
