Important Notice about COTD sell Toshiba L510

Hi all,
I purchased a laptop from COTD,which is http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/30139.QQQ-COTD said two years extended warrenty will be covered by Toshiba.
Yesterday I received and ring up Toshiba ask about extended warrenty,Toshiba check my serial no.and say we just provide one year warrenty, Toshiba's system hasn't got any extendy warrenty, and after I emailed COTD, one of the service crew answer me "The extended warranty is covered by Catch Of The Day."???!!!
COTD totally provided wrong infomation. does somebody else who purchase this one meet this situation?!

Like many retailers and IT resellers we provide our extended warranty through a third party warranty expert with courier pickup, repair and return. In situation they cannot repair, there will be either a brand new replacement, failing that, a full refund. Its foolproof and just as convenient as a Toshiba extended warranty.

Just as convenient as… but not the same. The whole point here is you advertised something that was not accurate, shame on you. And depending on the worth of the item I would be chasing a full refund for misleading advertising.

Mate, what QQQ said is pretty much standard. Most major retailers (like David Jones, Harvey Norman, JB HiFi) provide extended warranties through third parties that match all the terms of the manufacturer's standard warranty. The real question is whether this was properly stated anywhere on their site when you agreed to buy.

Do you have a link or screenshot showing the wording they used?

does the extra warranty come with the same Complementary Courier Pickup and Return that the initial 12 months comes with?

      Yes

      That's the POINT

The point now seems to be that you totally have it wrong. The issue of who provides the extended warranty was never answered. It was asked in the deal thread but never answered.

So now I say… you are totally providing wrong information.

Save you some trouble - for anyone who is not clear and fussed, we will furnish a full refund for either the extra coverage, laptop or both. That's how we do things, and if there was a misunderstanding, we can word it clearer next time.

I certainly prefer a third party extended warranty to manufacturer as MOST manufacturer's will argue with you on EVERY point with any claim.

    • To give customers all the facts before they make a decision. What is the average turn around time for a repair with the extended warranty company you use?

I know for a fact that I can take my Toshiba notebook to the local Toshiba service agent, and get it back repaired within 2-3 days. Can you offer this?

    • +1

I don't think anyone could have cause to complain about QQQ & COTD's very decent offer! I think it says a lot about their attitude to customer service, a mistake or miscommunication or whatever was made, on either side or both (irrelevant really) and they're stepping up to the plate to proactively (buzzword apology) make it right! Speaks volumes, well IMHO anyway! ;)

"I certainly prefer a third party extended warranty to manufacturer as MOST manufacturer’s will argue with you on EVERY point with any claim."

I would vehemently disagree with this as a sweeping statement; however, that's a discussion for another day! :p

I guess you've never had to deal with the repair centre HP uses.

        • +2

Or Toshiba. We deal with all of them quite frequently when we need to chase issues on behalf of customers. Third party CAN be more convenient. Either way, the best solution is for them to make the damn thing so it lasts.

        • Fair point on HP, yes I have had that singular "pleasure"; but some third party "warranty" suppliers are easily as bad!

Just check in with our old friend, google…Choice magazine has some interesting comments on the topic on their site too! ;)

Please bear in mind, the policies you purchase are not actually warranty, they are essentially an insurance policy! We all know how insurance companies love to pay up, right! :p

I certainly prefer a third party extended warranty to manufacturer as MOST manufacturer’s will argue with you on EVERY point with any claim.

I have never had experience with extended warranty but wouldn't manufacturer extended warranty be easier?

The manufacturer can replace parts for you at their cost price.

A third party warranty business makes their money by insurance fees and not having to pay out claims.
For a third party service to have your laptop fixed they need to pay more than the cost price of the replacement parts.

So if all extended warranties cost about the same the manufacturer extended warranty can deal with your claim with the least cost where any other warranty service will need to obtain the replacement parts from the manufacturer where there will be a mark-up involved making it harder for them to make money from dealing with your claim.

      • All I can tell you is when I needed to get my laptop fixed the Hp Authorised Repair centre in Clayton did all they could to not fix my laptop even after sending it in numerous times.

They even went so far as to claim that I was intentionally sabotaging my laptop because my extended warranty was about to expire.

        • I feel for you dude, HP Australia are abysmal from a customer service & moral standpoint! Don't blame your local guys, the mandate comes from above, and we all know what usually rises to the top of any septic tank! :(

  • In relation to the warranty, when does this start from? I'm still waiting for my Tosbiba ordered on the 23rd August. An email response to my query suggests they have a small problem in the warehouse (which don't seem too worried about) and I will eventually have my laptop shipped and then have to wait up to 1 or 2 weeks for delivery.

So, my question is, does the warranty start on the 23 August or when I get my laptop, or some other date?

  • -2

lol, i cant believe some people think the extra warranty is going to be covered by the manufacturer

    • -1

It's not that funny dude, manufacturers do offer extended warranties - either for sale, or as part of a value-add package! ;)

      • -3

fact is, those people would know who is covering the warranty!

        • Not necessarily fact, but yes, possibly; however, as COTD found out though, you can't just assume everyone will! ;)

          • @StewBalls: google buyer beware!

            • -1

@infernal_max: Otherwise known as caveat emptor, yes I'm familiar with the concept! Do you reckon you can safely speak for everybody though? As grandiose as I can be at times, I would never make such a presumption! :p

  • What SHOULD we do now? Seeking a FULL refund of extended warranty's fee?

  • I'm having a different issue with these laptops….

They are advertised as having switchable graphics:
"ATI Radeon HD4570 dedicated graphics. Hybrid and switchable with integrated Intel HM55 chipset."

This however seems to not be the case. I've tried a number of things and bottom line is there is only one graphics card available (Ati) and no way of switching to the Intel graphics. Only one graphics card is present in device manager in Windows, and there are no options in the BIOS to enable "Switchable Graphics" as there are in different model laptops with this feature.

    • Tried reading the manual?

My laptop has a hardware switch to swap between the graphic devices. Maybe yours does too?

      • Yes I have read the manual and researched this the whole day today coming to the conclusion that switchable graphics is non-existant in this laptop.
And what laptop do you have? This one?

        • Mine is a completely different brand.

A hardware switch make sense to me as i would not think that windows would be able to change video devices through software while windows is still running. (My laptop requires a reboot to switch between the display options)

Maybe the second video graphics device is only for connecting a monitor?

          • @anthony: Depends on the laptop but with most "Switchable graphics" laptops (particularly the newer ones) it is possible to switch on the fly in windows. Like this Lenovo one: http://www.wfu.edu/~yipcw/lenovo/t400/switchable_gfx/
But we don't seem to have any option with this Toshiba, and it's not mentioned anywhere in the manual either.

            • @Merlinux: With some of the shudder HPs, you can disable the driver for the discrete gpu in safe mode, remove it & on restart force it to use the igp. Not a particularly elegant solution, but a workable one! ;)

Now, I hope this isn't the case, but IIRC some of the Toshi models aren't actually switchable, this feature is very much model dependent! This goes double if it's got an i5 & HM55 chipset, IIRC Intel pulled a bit of a swifty on some & didn't connect some of the igp pathways, so the gpu is actually disabled permanently! :o

You might also find the feature is tucked away in the bios though, I've seen them labelled as something really inane like "enable high quality graphics" or some such…sorry if that's a bit vague! Oh, I've also heard of them being being switchable in the control panel, power settings (yeah I know, sounds a bit weird)! ;)
