Should I Hire a Car in Vancouver?

Hi guys

Going to Vancouver for 7 nights 8 days in June.
Will be two of us and our 8 mth old child.
Just hoping for advice on whether or not to hire a car for whole time or part time or not at all?
I know the public transport system is quite good and I expect downtown parking to be quite difficult.
We are looking at getting an airbnb close to downtown (e.g. olympic village area) with parking space anyways.
We'd be looking to do all the kid friendly attractions and also consider a day trip to Whistler.
I also kind of like the freedom of being able to visit "the burbs" or any nice restaurants that aren't easily accessible by public transport.

Would appreciate any tips!

    no

  • No.

I hired a car in Vancouver last September and I can honestly say it was the worst traffic I've ever experienced. And this is coming from someone who regularly hires cars and drives around LA

There's one main bridge towards Whistler and it has three lanes for BOTH directions, and it's terrible.

The whole city is massively overrated IMO, for a shitty city of 600,000 people I don't understand how it's considered world class or why it has the most expensive housing IN THE WORLD.

Hot money from the other side of the Pacific, no doubt.

  • A day trip to whistler with an 8 month year old would be my definition of hell TBH, just take the 8 month old up Grouse Mountain in the gondola if you're so inclined, it'll still take you a long time to drive there even though it's 'close'

  • Yes, then you can drive to the Chief, Whistler, Deep Cove, Lynn canyon. All good spots that will be a pain on a bus. Or you can use there Car2Go service or similar which is where you download an app and it tells you where the closest available car is to rent and when you're done you drop it off at the closest Car2Go park and it's all pretty cheap.

    • Hi..thanks for this info.
I assume Car2Go is ok for international visitors?
