New house need a lead in cable

Hi people,

Wondering if anyone can help as this is getting out of hand.

Just finished building a new unit behind our current house which we will be moving into shortly. Speaking with Telstra, whichever ISP I go with needs to be told to install a lead in cable(cable from street to house) along with the product I'm after.telstra has advised me that any ISP that uses Telstra network is able to do this.

The problem is. Telstra is to expensive so I don't want to go with them. I'm currently with Optus but was told by our builder that it has to be a provider that uses Telstra infrastructure.

So I've spoken to TPG who basically say that that's not there problem and I have to get Telstra to install the lead in before getting their service, but Telstra wouldn't just install the lead in, they want me to sign up with them for internet.

Has anyone been through this that can offer some advice?

  • you need telstra to install the cable, its that simple.
you cant get around it, sometimes the ISP you choose will install it and charge the cost back to you.

    • I'm happy to pay whoever to install it. Does that mean I'm stuck having to use Telstra as my ISP?

      • no, once its installed its free to be used with anyone.

        • But Telstra are saying they will install it if I sign up with a internet bundle with them. They won't allow me just to pay for the cable connection

        • @Jnr202:
Yup, had the same problem, and now stuck with Telstra 24 month plan. They didn't even entertain my request and once I agreed to 24 month plan, they happily installed within 3 weeks (fastest appointment to me as per Telstra)

  • Is this for NBN HFC?

  • try calling the Telstra Pre-Provisioning team on 1800 895 319

    • I did. They moved me onto sales stating that an order has to go through sales to begin the process.

  • Belong is a cheap and quick way to get started. However I am not sure of their early termination fee's - you might be able to disconnect for free if your argue that the quality of service is poor.

    • Can go month by month on Belong

      • I'm sure I checked and they are not available in the area. I'll double check

    • so checked with belong and telstra, apparently we are unable to be connected. I dont know how that works as there is a telstra pit next door. I'm currenty connected to optus cable internet. might ring them and try.

  • I thought whoever you signed up with, they (the ISP) would get Telstra to install it regardless since they owned the copper network…well NBN does now/soon or whatever. Try calling another ISP to see if they can organise telstra to install the cable.

  • I moved into a new home late last year. Similar issue (no lead in cable) I wanted to subscribe to a naked ADSL service (non NBN area), there was no way to subscribe to this without at least first subscribing to a voice service (to get the lead in) - on completion the voice service could then be cancelled.

Honestly a very inefficient system ….. My biggest gripe was that it took 2 MONTHS to get an appointment to get the lead in, on the day of install I sat at home, then went outside and notice a "sorry we missed you card" - I immediately called Telstra and had to wait another 2 months for a subsequent appointment - so all up 4 months to get a voice service I didn't really want - THEN - I had to wait to get ADSL provisioned on the service !!. Several months later I haven't got around to cancelling the voice service which has never had a phone plugged into it…. I guess thats their plan.

    • well i hope thats not the case with us.

  • I had the same issue. No matter who you sign up with will get Telstra to install lead in cable for you as all phone lines are looked after by them. I signed up for Optus and Telstra came out to install lead in cable.

    • Ring my republic mob. They're new and getting very popular already.
