What to buy from Australia (Needless to say: with a good bargain)

I have a group of friends currently tourists in Australia visiting around Sydney and Melbourne. They have been continuously asking me to suggest something specific to Australia they could buy from here. They are in Sydney for few more days. I believe my fellow OZBargainers would be the best people to ask this question.

Your valuable input along with a recommendation of a place to find a good bargain for those would really be appreciated.

Few things popping up in my minds are:
- Opal Jewellery
- Original Sheep skin rugs
- Australian Nuts

I went to the States recently and gave some to my American gf's parents, then when we went to the supermarket they were on sale there! They're making a push to sell them there and had a competition to win tickets to Australia and everything.

    • As long as they are real Tim Tams. In Asia, they sell the fake ones and I am told they are yuck.
I don't think we (in Australia) sell fake Tim Tams with asian writing on it.

  • Dried or canned Abalone/Sea Cucumber
mangos (not currently in season though)
tasmanian cherries (also not in season)

    Ginger beer.

    Also Buderim Ginger Marmalade… https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/Browse/spreads-breakfast-…

What about Cadbury chocolate? You can probably get it in Singapore but maybe not some of the more novel flavours like Marvellous Creations.

Reject Shop has some awesome Australian chocolate-dipped shortbread biscuits for only $2.

Was gonna say pawpaw ointment but cheapbloke has that above… how about the 'australia's organics' (or something similar; I usually find them in IGA's) soaps - aussie made and should be under $5 for a 200-250g bar with scents like lemon myrtle, eucalyptus etc. Some $2 shops also sell smaller versions of similar soaps though these aren't quite as good in my mind

  • I found Opal watches interesting as well, looks like a good option and specific to Australia, any recommendation for shops around city?

  • If you're near an outlet store, RM Williams boots.

Lavender scented products from Tasmania, anything Made in Australia - like candles, Australian branded clothing, I Love Sydney t-shirts, beauty products from Priceline which are Australian brands like Australis, Nude by Nature, Natio, 1000 Hour, Face of Australia, Luma, etc. Things that are harder to get overseas. Vegemite and Tim Tams are a must.

Most of those I Love Sydney t-shirts are made in China though …

      • Only if you buy the cheap ones. You can buy Australian Made at the airport. You just want people to know that you love Sydney (and have been to Sydney).

  • Food:

Weet-Bix and Vegemite toast for breakfast! Then down to the local bakery for a meat pie and tomato sauce for lunch. Grab an Aussie cake whilst you're there such as an Apple cake, Cherry ripe slice (best slice in the whole world) or some lamingtons!

Then for dinner, its got to be at the local take away with an Aussie burger with the lot and some hot chips served with chicken salt (uniquely Australian), also grab a Chiko roll or some steamed Dim Sims with soy sauce whilst you're there :)

Then finish the day off with a nice home baked Pavlova and a drop of one of the many great local wines Australia produces each year :)

    An overpriced house?

Where are they from? Chinese love vitamins, sheepskin products, abalone, weetbix, natural Australian skin care products. Just walk down Swanston St for all the souvenirs you can get if you're in Mellbourne. For slightly cheaper souvenir shops there's one in Waterfront city that's empty. For larger quantities you could always go to Costco and buy Australian products there such as dried fruit and nuts. Chemist Warehouse for vitamin needs. Jurlique for high end organic skin care. There's also markets with Aussie stuff and some more upmarket design shops such as Melburnalia (?) on Bourke St up past Virgin Active.

For Sydney I'm not sure about where to go.
