Best Value Car for under 20K

I'm currently in the market for something that's reliable, new and cheap.
I've no preference for brand as of yet, but I assume Japan/Korean/Thailand vehicles are the way to go in this price range.

Edit:
No size requirement, as I only need it as a daily vehicle.
Would need to be Automatic, as my partner may need to drive it.

don't buy toyota. worst in sales and after sale service. my own experience at cornes toyota adelaide. dodgy, liar and careless people, I seen in my life.

    • have to agree. My Corolla is going into CMI Toyota in Ade for a recall for a fuel line replacement. I asked the question "how much is the 90k service at the same time? Thought while its in I'd get it serviced"
      "$250"
"Nah ill leave it for now"
"we offer a recall service for $99"
      Thanks you potato. Scamming assholes.

    brand new VW Polo

  • Personally I went with a Hyundai i30 Premium with Diesel engine 2012 model. A lot of spec for the price leather, panoramic glass roof, gps, reversing camera and great economy and reliability. Only con is hard to find not many in that spec

With that budget I can safely assume u don't work at westpac

  • HSV VRX Astra and Ford XR5 hold no value, can get a small car a few years old with 200+ HP for 10-15k
Kia Cerato and Suzuki Ignis (esp since Suzuki Swift 1.0 turbo never came to aus, most likely so people buy "sports" model) are both 20k new drive away

    • Swift 1.0T is just about to come out ;)

And that's not the Sport model. I believe the Sport will have the 1.4T from the Vitara

      • Ah didnt know, that car must run on fumes, car version of a scooter

Lol all the new Suzuki's do :)

Power/weight ratio is the new focus

  • User name doesn't check out

  • Plus 1 for used polo 1.2 tsi. They may have 5 years warranty ;}

  • Skoda Rapid takes the cake for me… Trickle down Audi technology with the same MQB chassis as the new A3 for under $20k… Ozbargain should be all over this car instead of the usual Camry fanbois

A used Renault Koleos may be the way to go.

Proven Japanese engineering from Nissan XTrail with low servicing costs (they share most of the mechanical bits).

South Korean built, so it's going to be quite reasonably put together.

French badge, so you will get a lot of kit for the money with depreciation associated with French brands taken care by the first owner. It is also a Renault, so it's going to be big on passive and active safety.

A mid spec 2.5 years old 2wd auto model will likely to set you around $18,000. Comes with most of the bells and whistles including leather trim, keyless entry, climate control, electric everything, Bose sound system, in built GPS, a whole bunch of safety gear, 6 airbags and 5 star safety rating. It should also come with the balance of the warranty and roadside assistance (5 year unlimited kms when new). Considering the Nissan components in the car, it should also have a long life left in it as well.

Insurance costs can vary quite a bit among insurers, so it would be worth getting a few quotes.

Also, it has a European badge and is not exactly that commonly seen on the road, so most people would think it's more expensive than what it actually is as well.

An overlooked brand in this country; a relative sales-flop model, and; a car that was pretty cheap to begin with.

Empty it into a well-greased used car yard, place it in a pre-heated marketplace and what have you got?

One of the great used car buys in a long time, that's what.

  • Get a used Mitsubishi Magna. I recently got a 2003 wagon for less than 3k. 130k on the clock. Though not luxury, it has lots of space and power. I think the used Mitsubishi cars are the most under valued ones. You can save $17k.

Big fan of Kia. We picked up the Cerato s with av pack for 19200 before trade in on one of their deals. Great small car. Cheap to run. 7 year warranty and I liked the internal styling way more than Hyundai or Toyota in the same price range. Take a test drive and check it out versus the others u are considering.

I'd highly recommend checking this site out before making a purchase:

Another +1 for a Kia or Hyundai here. Or Mazda

  • get a demo mazda 3 auto

  • Mitusbishi Mirage,

Way under $20k brand new, 5 year warranty, 5 star saftey rating, fixed price servicing, most fuel efficient car you can buy without going to hybrids.

They've had some poor reviews by the professional reviewers, but if you vist the many forums with people that own them you'll find heaps of people that love them. Infact they have one of the best ratings on product review dom com dot au.

Can't recommend them enough as an ozbargener they are a wise choice

  • If you're after fuel efficiency and cheap to run, get a Ford Fiesta diesel. Get a couple of years old one for like $10k and you're laughing.

My office moved 50km up the highway, and my modded performance car that gets < 400km to $80 of petrol wasn't going to cut it, so I bought a diesel fiesta as a daily and it's amazing. $40 gets me 800-900km. Zippy little thing too. Would recommend as a daily to anyone.

  • $20k will buy a decent classic car. Something that is likely to INCREASE in value. The extra you pay in fuel will be more than offset by the increase in value and you'll have a car that is cool as well. You could probably spend 10-15k and throw $5k of upgrades at it too and still get your money back.
