What do I need to consider when buying home security camers?

Hi All,

There have been a few robberies in my area during both night and day (with the person a few houses down having his boat and trailer stolen). I am now looking to buy security cameras for my home.

What do I need to consider?

I want something that can detect movement, easy to install (wireless?), night and day, storing of recorded vision, and access. Ideally, something that I can access from work on my phone to view the cameras.

A friend was telling me that some products make you pay a monthly subscription?

All help would be great.

Thanks.

EDIT:
I have security lights fixed around the home, will they interfere with the security cameras?

is there anything restricting you from hardwiring the cameras?
in my experience too many things can go wrong with wireless cams.

    • Im an average handyman but nothing really.

        if nothing then get hardwired.
just measure and have your supplier cut
cabling and fix heads to them.
        other things youll need:
        2 x step ladders, 2 x blokes, 1 x yellow tongue and a case of beer.

Subscription I have heard is only for if you want monitoring by an agency or third party of some sort for contacting the police or fire emergency service or whatever etc. From looking at Reddit most people say the subscription service is mostly useless and you are just overpaying for it.

But yeah I would also suggest 720p minimum.

Try here much more wealth of information.

  • From the videos I have seen, and for the price, The Xiaomi Xiaofang cameras for $30 do a good job. Only indoors though, but with some strategic placement they should work well. I guess you could put them outside if you have a battery pack/long power cable and can build a little enclosure for it too.

You need to consider the quality of the image (which i think you'll need a good 3mp at least), and the reliabilty of the camera.
I previously tried a d-link camera, which was easy to setup, however you got to use their cloud service. I usually only turn the camera on when I leave the home, the problem is everytime the camera is restarted, the motion sensor logic doesn't work.
Then i switched to a hikvision camera.
And although it is harder to setup, you don't need to subscribe to any cloud service, all monitoring goes straight to the camera, and it has never given me any issue since i use it.

  • Make sure they turn on.
