  • Laphroaig

    someone pronounce that for me

    • +33

      Charcoal.

      • +2

        seems correct

      • Its smoky flavor does remind me of charcoal

      • +6

Not quite sure that I agree. Coir rope might be closer? I've got a bottle of this and it is being used to show people an example of hairy-chested whisky for people who think that bravado is more important than subtlety. I don't think that it'll every be finished.

Do yourself a favour and DON'T buy this. The more expensive Laphroaig whisky lines are better - but I'd rather drink something with more balance and depth.

IMHO, a good starting point is Highland Park 12yo (from Orkney). It's got smoke and iodine character - but in the most harmonious way.

        • +2

Another good starting point is Talisker Skye, a bit lighter on the peat but plenty of 'coastal' nuances.

        • +7

Strokes/folks. I like peaty whisky and I think it's pretty tasty. Not subtle, but I might prefer Laphroaig to Tailsker, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Well, maybe. They all have a place on my shelf.

        • +2

Personally, it reminds me of Betadine Iodine throat gargle almost exactly.

        • +1

@Chazzozz: Talisker Storm is acceptable as well

        • @v3l0city & @Chazzozz: Agreed! I've got a Talisker ready to go next (I think it is 'Storm') and yes, they have all the important characteristics without the need to hit you over the head with any one of them.

        • -1

          @machalel: Errrkk!

      • Flaming moss?

    • +5
      • +2

        Or https://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/how-to-pronounce-glen…

I like the peaty Islays. Will be getting a bottle. Nearing the end of my Lagavulin - which is a bit more refined - but time to give the Laphroaig a look-in again.

        • +2

If you ever get a chance to pick up a bottle of Laphroaig 15yo, I recommend it. I'm an Ardbeg man myself - the Uigeadail is a lovely expression, but even the 10 year old is one of the best value malts going around IMHO, especially when you can pick it up on sale.

        • +1

          @simulacrum:

Laphroaig 18yo is better but discontinued.

          Tried all
ardbeg 10 YO, Uigeadail & corryvreckan

and I like corryvreckan the best.

        • @GundamZeta: Yeah 15yo is discontinued as well (apart from teh 200th anniversary edition) I preferred it to the 18.. there was a short period when Nick's got their hands on a container and were selling it for 90 bucks a bottle. I got four but gave two away as gifts and drank the other two. I've seen them go for 200GBP now *sigh.. regret not having bought more. Up there with not taking a chance to pick this up when I had a chance to at a fraction of this price: https://www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/auctions/88_the-50th-au…

        • @GundamZeta: Supernova… ooh yeah.

    • +1

la-froy-ge and it is an excellent whiskey!!

    • Pronounced as Loth-brok…like Ragna Lothbrok.

  • Anyone had that 18 year old Glen Marnoch?

    • No, but has good reviews online. Australia's cheapest 18 year apparently.

      • +10

I don't know, I went to Kings Cross one night…

  • Suntory Whisky (if you're heading to Japan soon, this can be had for $15)

Passed on the Suntory Whisky. Is it good?
Enjoying the Yamazake from Super(market) here for about $50. Didn't shop around - just grabbed it.

    • +2

Definitely just a mixer. Fine in a highball.

Great price for the Yamazaki. Try the Hakushu too, that's great.

      • +1

Hakushu is next drop at same price. Not worth wasting a holiday on cheap booze.

        • +1

          Amen. Have a wonderful trip!

        • +7

          @undercut:
          Thanks🎏
Sitting on deck of beach house ($50/n converted artist‘s studio on Izu Peninsula SW of Tokyo, rented from artist & surfer husband), forest & mountain stream beside me, with view of ocean just 25m away… Yamazake in hand. Near perfection😯

        • +2

@Infidel: Sitting at work looking at the rain outside and wondering if there's some sort of teleport device to, like, be there instead. That sounds amazing

        • +1

          @Wampus:
It is bliss - just extended from 6 to 9 or 12 days. (Cancelled 6 of 9 days in Tokyo for this. Have previously spent ages in Tokyo.) Maybe I won't come home :-)

My generous landlords gave me some sort of smoked scallop in a tin (snacku to have with whiskey) - when I mentioned I was enjoying the Yamazaki. I am learning about drinking whiskey in Japan.

Cancel teleportation! Now in the forest, it is cool & hot sunshine of last week may be over. (Shouldn't have bought the sunscreen!) Forecast is similar to Brisbane :-(

Started raining lightly here yesterday, so hopped in very hot bath outside - made of stones from beach. Now the birds are singing, the rain has stopped.

Today I cycle (free bike at house) to one of the local Onsen (spa bath with naturally heated water) the area is famous for.

Will check out other whiskey at the 1 super(market) in the small village. Farmers market has great local produce. Then maybe pizza at the landlords cafe / surfing school by the river. They have different whiskey & whiskey snacku for me to try there.

But a few too many Aussies - Australian Embassy in Tokyo has a beach house here & it's a surfing place.

        • @Infidel: Yeah you're not helping my sulk btw

        • +2

          @Wampus:
But it is terrible here, honest! Its driving me to drink (with my coffee at 09:30). And it's a long bike ride for more supplies at the little village. The only bus runs twice a day in the other direction. It's so rural. The only people who speak English are Australian Embassy officials on holiday & I don't really want to speak with them. You'd hate it!! ;-)

        • +1

          @Infidel:
Google translate says this about the gift of 'snacku to have with whiskey'…
Canned food that will become a snack as it is, "Can tama"! (brandname) It is! I thoroughly smoked the scallops of the muddy fish. The smell of smoked rice and the taste of the scallops give rise to alcohol.
I agree - nice smokiness with whiskey, like smoked oysters or mussels.

Tastes great but the hangover ugh

    • +15

For relaxing times…. Make it Suntory time.

    • +2

I'm a fan of the Miyagikyo, give that a try if you find it there. It's nice and savoury, hard to describe, but not much of the usual dried fruit/vanilla flavours from most other scotch whiskies (even though it is matured in sherry casks from memory). Kind of reminds me of a drier Glenfarclas or Springbank

      • Will keep my eye & nose out for it.
4 weeks is not a long enough holiday to taste the local drops - but will try😀

      • +2

Plus 1 for this. Its pretty impossible to find Japanese whiskeys with an age statement over there anymore especially at a reasonable price.
The miyagikyo was my favourite easy to find NAS though. I thought had some salted caramel undertones and a hint of seaweed.
Delicious and reasonably priced either way.
There are also some super reasonably priced american bourbons including some limited edition japan releases that are excellent value for money

        • +1

YES! Seaweed! that's the savoury/salty taste I couldn't put my finger on. Sounds weird, but each time I drank it I would think "there is something savoury, almost umami about this whisky…." Now I can look for the seaweed note. And I can see the salted caramel now too. Good work, goodtimes :)

Also, excellent point on what you say about the US Bourbons - can pick up some premium bottles there for approx $30ish that sell in Australia for $75+. Kept talking myself out of the Elijah Craig 12yo 94 proof….

        • @carwashhair:
Seaweed! Umami! Oh now I've got to try it!!

        • Regarding disappearance of age statement on bottles of Japanese whisky - article said is due to the prior lack of popularity of Japanese whisky, & current demand.

There were few barrels laid down 10+ years ago, so just not available. Distillers have moved to bottles without age statement. But prior NAS bottles had older whisky in blend. Prices went up ridiculously$$!!

Guess the Miyagikyo just won't taste the same 😢

Sourced a bottle of Miyagikyo in local village liquor store. Only 1 bottle - I meant to come back for last night, but spent too long in Onsen (spa) & store was closed.

      • +1

Yes, I tasted this on my last trip and it was delicious, but went with a bottle of Nikka Premium 12 instead.

I was amazed how hard it was to find stuff that had been so common only a few years ago - yamazaki 12, hibiki 17, etc, really only in the single serve or 125mL bottles. Amazing what a bit of market pressure can do…

        • See above regarding unavailability of age statement on bottles.

The article is titled The ‘Nikka Shock’: Nikka Radically Restructures their Whisky Line-up - Nikka has changed its available range from last September😢 Nikka Premium 12 is no more.

Why wasn't I told how good Japanese whisky is? Have been visiting Japan for over 10 years, but only tasting the whisky this trip.

        • +1

          @Infidel:

Some of the less popular niche malts are really interesting (and a lot more ballsy than your typical japanese whisky). Get your hands on any of the "Ichiro's malt" line out of the Chichibu distillery or the Akashi White Oak releases from Eigashima.

        • @simulacrum:
Next trip… arrived back in Oz yesterday.

        • @Infidel: my condolances :p .. arriving home after a holiday from Japan was kinda a sucky feeling. Try to avoid local sushi takeaway joints for a few weeks haha

      • +1

Returned to beach house tonight with bottle of Miyagikyo. Impressed. Thanks for the advice.

  • Great price on the Jameson's Caskmates Stout Edition as well. That's a really nice whiskey, but the trouble I found with the last bottle I had is it ran out a little too quickly. (Testament to just how nice it was!)

  • Oh yeah! I just finished my bottle of Laphroaig. Perfect timing. Their Facebook page is worth following. Lots of great photos.

  • +2

For all the Laphroaig 10 fans out there, if you ever have a friend coming over to Australia from Germany, get them to grab a couple of bottles from the supermarket to bring you. Whiskey prices in Germany are very cheap compared to Australia - Laphroaig 10 can easily be had for between $40 and $50 a bottle (converted from Euros), and with the 2.25L limit for bringing alcohol into Australia…that's three bottles!

  • Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition such a great drop.

    great price…

  • +1

Ah, we pay so much for quality whisky here :-0
I'll be getting a bottle or two of Laphroaig from Aldi, thanks.

  • +2

    Glen Orrin 5 Year Blended - $34.99
Glen Marnoch Bourbon Cask Single Malt - $39.99
Glen Marnoch 18 Year Single Malt - $69.99

    What, no Glen Campbell?

    • +2

      He's in Wichita

  • Laphroaig is great.
Has anyone had Aldi branded whiskey?

    • The Highland Earl is very respectable, it's probably worth twice the price.

Personally I prefer single malts but I don't mind it.

      • I might pick up the Highland Earl then, it is only $28 which is cheaper than white label JD/Beam and Canadian Club.

    • Last year I gave their Glen Marnoch Islay single malt whisky a try. "$45? what the hell."

If you see it… stick to Lahproaig.

  • +2

Perfect for my ALDI geared ski trip

  • Anyone tried a price match with Dan Murphy's?

Aldi doesn't sell liquor in SA so this is my only option.

  • +1

I bought two of the Laphroaig an cuan mor recently and it's a tough drink! I suspect this Laphroaig would be much the same?

    • Depends if you like the smokiness

  • Suntory Time with Bill Murray from movie lost in translation

  • +1

isn;t this stuff bad for you.
    that's what gloin told me.

  • +1

Nice one.. and I like the comment on picking up Suntory for $15 if you happen to be in Japan. I was in England earlier this year and Laphroaig 10 year was going for GBP25 (A$43) in every Waitrose I was in - doesn't apply for most of us sadly, but if you happen to be heading there, you might pick up a bargain :)

  • Laphroaig is now $73 at First Choice, so Dan's will definitely price match.

  • So Dan Murphys has price matched for Laphroaig.

  • Any Laphroaigs left in Sydney?
