What to Do with Old DVDs

The other day someone offered to lend me a DVD, and I realised I don't even have a working DVD player anymore - despite a pretty extensive, but old, library of DVDs (mostly movies, some TV Shows).

What can I do with them?

  • Try to sell them bulk on GumTree/E-Bay (does anyone buy second-hand DVDs anymore?)
  • Dump them at Cash Converters?
  • Just dump them?

Any other suggestions/possibilities?

Capture them into an appropriate format and then dump them at the Op Shop.

No need to capture as I never feel need to watch them anymore (too much new stuff coming out) - but I like the idea of taking to Op shop.

      • I try to donate stuff that is surplus, and in reasonable nick, to the Op Shops. I like the concept of recycling and that someone in need might get help.

I've bought a couple of DVDs from Op Shops; they are usually $2 each and $8 for the sets. You just need to check they aren't scratched. If I was you I would still do the capture - every now and again you think, it would be nice to watch …..

Our local Op Shop also had smallish china bowls for 50c each. They were the perfect size for cat bowls and easily stacked into the dishwasher; we bought a heap of them. Plastic cat bowls never clean properly.

    Our local council recycles DVDs

The Bayside Council Corporate Centre accepts domestic volumes of soft plastics for recycling as well as fluorescent tubes, light globes, household batteries, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes and mobile phones

I'm sure you could sneak some Beta tapes in as well.

TV series on dvd that are out of print can fetch a decent price on ebay, so worth checking before you give them to the op shop.

    • Thanks for the tip - Might check for any of the large complete series I have.

  • What do you have? I'll take some donations!

If you have a Freecycle group in your area, advertise them there. They might be to somebody's taste.

  • Reuse as frisbees*

  • Sell them to the predator in predator 2

  • Merged from Best way to rid of DVD and Blurays?

    Hi all,

I am doing some clearing out and have a pile of 100 or DVD movies and blurays I no longer need. They all like semi-recent movies from 2000 to 2010

What best way to get rid of them?

Putting in ebay too much hassle with postage and I haven't got the time to list each individual title.

Same with gumtree, take too long.

Is there anywhere I can donate them or sell them in one big lot?

    • Freecycle maybe?

    • Obvious places like CEX / Cash Converters will take them.. you can see what you get online. (not much but will be something).

You may literally get 10 cents per DVD.

Or try your luck as a bulk buy on Gumtree / Ebay

  • Can post an update here. Cash Converters told me they would give me 5 cents per DVD and a bit more for box sets.

It's amazing how much physical media has dropped in value.
