  • the Philips (Xiaomi) EyeCare Connected Desk Lamp is better

    • +3

I have both, the Philips lamp is brighter and is much more flexible in terms of being able to direct the light.

However the Xiaomi one is way more stylish and looks nicer in the desk.

    • Seems like the Xiaomi Philips Eyecare lamp isn't available with AU plug…

      • Which plugs do they come with? I thought that the Chinese plug is basically the same as ours, just upside down?

        • US plugs (aka flat plugs).

        • Upside down Australian plug is only for earthed appliances.

If the appliance is double insulated, generally it will be two pins flat (US/Japan)

    • The Phillips eye care lamp just has an ambient light sensor to adjust the level of brightness.
The led lamp on the other hand actually takes the PMW flickering power source and stabilizes it to a stead light source. Plus it has colour temperature.

      Not with shipping it ain't.

  • Got this for a birthday, awesome lamp

  • Got two for my kids and one for my mum. Awesome awesome lamp. Very fast shipping too from Gearbest. All three lamps received within 7-10 days from ordering.

  • i am using this one pretty good one
especially when you laid on bed and using your smart phone apps to turn off the lights
good for lazy people like me

Is the lamp not right next to you? All you'd have to do is press the button. I imagine this would be quicker than whipping out the phone, unlocking it, loading the app, and then switching it off?

      • Look lostn, can you stop being so darned logical? They need to sell this lamp at this over inflated price, pronto, K thankx.

      • Not only can you press the button to turn it off, but you can also interact with it using the phone.

        • Well now I'm sold.

        • @lostn:

You can schedule it to turn on/off etc using Mi Home app. Very cool.

        • @dero: Can also turn it off when I don't want it. If I'm not home, or I'm asleep, I don't need it on during that time anyway.

        • @lostn: Can it turn off with a regular switch, i.e. so I don't have to use my phone?

        • @northernculture: If you turn it off with a regular switch, it's equivalent to unplugging it. Also, from reading online comments, I believe that if you turn it off with the wall switch, just flicking the switch back on will not turn the light back on. It's not the suggested way to use this lamp.

I'm saying I can't think of a practical use for turning it off via your phone. If you're going out, do you leave the lamp on before you leave the house? I would turn it off manually. If you're about to fall asleep, would you not turn it off manually before you sleep? You'd leave the lamp on as you dozed off?

I don't know about this model, but I have the Philips Eyecare 2 version and there is definitely a capacitive button on the lamp for turning it off without your phone. And it does turn back on when you press the button for turning it back on. You do not need to use the wall switch.

I use my Eyecare 2 without installing the smartphone app. I just don't have any use for it. I see 'smart' functions as gimmicks because the use case for these things never applies to me.

        • @lostn: His question was about what happens if you do use a wall switch. Obviously it should work fine if you don't use the wall switch. But it doesn't seem to be able to be used in conjunction with a wall switch. I don't have one myself, but as an owner, you could confirm that if you turn it off using a wall switch, the light does not turn back on when you switch the wall switch back on. So I'd be curious to know the answer.

It should be possible for the light to have a memory of whether it was on or off before it was disconnected from the power. But the question is whether it does. From Xiaomi customer service, the answer seems to be a no. The light is too smart to be used with a wall switch.

He is saying that turning it off via the button is like unplugging it. This is not true at all. At least in my model. There is a button on the lamp for turning it on or off, so it is not necessary to unplug or use the wall switch. And I never suggested using it that way.

I don't understand why he would use the wall switch in the first place. Not only is it a longer stretch to reach than your bedside lamp or desk, it isn't necessary because there's already a button on the lamp. His comment was a reply to mine, regarding turning it off at the lamp. I made no mention of wall switches so bringing that up was irrelevant. I don't know why he mentioned that when my question wasn't about wall switches. If you read our comments in context and in order, I think you'll be puzzled too. I actually assumed with this model that the wall switch must be the only way to turn it off without the phone.

I don't have one myself, but as an owner, you could confirm that if you turn it off using a wall switch, the light does not turn back on when you switch the wall switch back on. So I'd be curious to know the answer.

I haven't tested it, but I would assume the light does not turn back on after using the wall switch. The buttons on the lamp to turn them on and off are just that, buttons, not switches. A switch will let it remember its on/off state when the power is off. A button has no memory of its state. This would be like turning off your desktop PC from the wall switch. The button that powers on your desktop case is also a button and not a switch, so it does not have an on/off position. The button will alternate between on and off, but will not remember where it is supposed to be if your power goes out. You would need to manually turn it back on once power is restored. Old computers from mid-90s and earlier had their power buttons as a switch. The button would be recessed when on, so it would have two states and remember when it is supposed to be off or on.

It should be possible for the light to have a memory of whether it was on or off before it was disconnected from the power. But the question is whether it does. From Xiaomi customer service, the answer seems to be a no. The light is too smart to be used with a wall switch.

This is working the way an electrical device is expected to behave if it has a power button and not a switch. Your phone and tablet are the same. If the button has two physical states, it should remember to stay on when the power is out. Monitors have switches without the button looking like a switch. There are two physical states even if you can't feel them. But a device with a capacitive power button as opposed to a physical one, I have not seen have two states of ON/OFF. My capacitive monitor is the same.

The question is, why are people turning off their devices from the wall switch? To me it seems like a non-issue.

What app is it I tried a few but couldn't get it to work

      • Mi Home and/or Yeelight.

    • The recent update now supports ifttt. I'm using Amazon Echo to control brightness, colour temperature, setting to sleep mode, and fade in to wake up in the morning.

  • Are you able to set a scheduled on off timer on the app or just remotely control on and off? Example I just want to have this in between 6pm to 10pm. Thanks

    • There's a schedule option in the app, so I assume yes. Don't use it though.

      • I have found that the "Schedule" function on the Mi Home app doesn't tend to work for me, but the same function on the YeeLight App did. Also you need to try out a couple of timezones as it is not always clear whether the app takes the local time, or the China time.

    • You can do that with Mi Home app.

    Fyi, no band 28

  • can you rotate this so that it goes up? I illumiate the wall behing the PC..

    • Nope, only goes up 45 degrees from horizontal. Can go down near vertical though.

  • Philips Xiaomi lamp (white) also available at gearbest and only another AU$12 or so - http://www.gearbest.com/table-lamps/pp_393727.html

    • More expensive and looks uglier… no thanks.

    • According to the specs, the Philips is 1200lumen whereas the one in this post is just 300LM. I can't imagine using less than a 40W incandescent in a desk lamp.

  • I bought one and it turned up broken, anyway I did the Gearbest video upload to provide evidence for the warranty and they just sent me another one without much fuss!

    I love lamp

  • Why are they asking for $1.89 priority shipping in checkout?

  • Just to confirm then. This doesn't ship with an AU plug so you'll need a converter to use it?

    • Would like to know this also.

  • FYI, anyone finding that the device won't connect to the network, with an error such as, "Public networks aren't supported…" I was able to solve this by switching the region to Mainland China. Not sure why but it worked fine after that. You may also set language to English rather than Default.
