  • NSW Only…

  • Don't ever buy these. The husk have been bleached to make it nice and white on the outside. Do more harm than good if you drink these.

    • Why are they bleached?

        'Why are they bleached?'

Did you not read the comment?

    • Wot?

    • +3

Did you expect them to be naturally brown? Drinking coconuts are green. They've shaved off the husk to reduce weight which is why they are so round. Now maybe they do bleach them, but not to get rid of the husk colour.

      • +1

Young coconuts do have husks that are not brown. One can also tell from the thickness of the 'meat' inside - young coconuts have thinner and softer meat.

        • What I wrote, they're green.

      • We have yellow drinking coconuts too back in my home country. Their husk is less brown. Not as white as the ones in the picture though.

        • They are white because the outer husk has been shaved off.

        • @greenpossum: Yes I know the husk has been shaved. I was simply pointing out that they come in yellow too since you mentioned drinking coconuts are green.

        • @Harshad: Interesting. I guess that isn't as surprising as the green oranges in Vietnam are to people who are used to seeing orange oranges.

        • @greenpossum:
          www.google.com/search?q=oranges+green+ethylene

You probably already knew that, but some others foolishly reading expired deals, today, might not.. :)

        • @Dne: This was Vietnam so they were naturally green. I've read about that they exist in the Caribbean too. Also the oranges here are local so don't need to be imported from countries where they are green and then treated to turn them orange.

        • @greenpossum:

This was Vietnam so they were naturally green.

That is what I mean. Link just for explanation as to why, chlorophyll v ethylene.

It is very easy to be misinterpreted on OzBargain.

ok everyone, please just drink the juice inside. Do not, I repeat, do not eat the husk.

Thanks for pointing out mate. Never realized the stupid lengths some people will go to make products apparently more attractive to consumers, despite the negative impact on their health.

The majority of supermarket eggs are bleached. Are they bad for you too?

    • +4

been bleached to make it nice and white on the outside

but still so asian on the inside…

    • i'll also add that this is just vegan fearmongering.

he's right but it's cosmetic until proven otherwise.

Just like an apple, once you cut open, it will turn brown. Same with coconut regardless of the type, once the husk/skin is cut, naturally will turn brown. Companies bleach them as its more appealing to people. It was reported in ACA as well a few years back.

    • yeah but u can treat an apple with something unharmful like salt so it doesn't go brown

Id be shocked if they treat coconuts with bleach even if its just on the outside since cutting open the coconut could expose it to bleach (if true)

      • Did you know that the pearly white garlic from China is bleached?

Hence I always buy Aus, Spanish, etc. onions that have purple and brown in their skin and are odd sizes, but bigger than the uniform sized Chinese ones.

        • Do you worry about the uniform sized apples or oranges?

I have always been told by my mum not to buy Chinese garlic too, but like the child I am to her I did some research, and have found articles about bleaching. Which is something that has to be true, since Chinese garlic is very white and unnatural.

But after a bit more research, I realised 80% of world garlic export is from china. So I wonder, if there is a health issue with Chinese garlic, it would seem like a lot of people should be getting sick from it.

        • @cloudy:

Various heavy metals and some other toxins just continue to build-up in the body to points where they cause disease. Cadmium is a very common contaminant in Chinese soil and just one of many that fall into that category. I enjoy the wording of this little abstract as relates Chinese peanuts - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25038268/

Another brief and fun read for you - www.theguardian.com/environment/chinas-choice/2014/apr/18/ch…

This will be a very rare occurrence for Harris Farm on an Ozbargain page, an overpriced/over hyped organic/wholesome store designed for the pretentious mob who reside in the Eastern Suburbs/Lower North Shore of Sydney. I'm ok to pay 80% less for 'synthetic' bananas.

    • +1

who reside in the Eastern Suburbs/Lower North Shore of Sydney.

I suspect the Harris Farm stores you're visiting are competing for that segment in that part of town.

Have you been to a Harris Farm outside of these areas? They seem to do a pretty good job of competing against woolworths/coles/aldi/independent grocer in most locations.

    • yes because since we live in such a rich area we are a pretentious mob of people with nothing better to do with our wealth.

Btw my parents "bought" their house 15 years ago when houses weren't as expensive and the area wasn't considered as rich.No shit we needed a mortgage.

  • I think I saw someone bought 4 from woolworths Ashfield today and the price on the screen was 6 dolloars. 4 for 6 today?

  • Whatever you do when you buy these and intend to drink them on a walk, please dispose of them responsibly. (Unlike the (profanity) who leave them on the footpath, fences and gutters in my neighbourhood of the eastern suburbs of Sydney).

Coconuts are fairly easy to open….just take a butcher knife chop the top off like a pentagon shape and insert straw,
drink and use spoon to scrape the coconut yum.

Durians….. all it takes 3 chops to cut in the middle and pry with your hands. Eat the many variety of durian types and wash your mouth after….it will be a death breathe when you speak to the next person.

Papaya…. slice half, clear seeds, dig in.
Interesting after coming here, I see paw paw instead lolz.

Pineapples are the harder ones to cut right….remove skin, cut diagonally to remove the thorny stuffs so your tongue doesn't stings when you eat too much.

Mangoes-teen …lovely fruit, peal skin with hands, eat delicious white flesh and ptoeeww! you get pea shooter ammos.

Jackfruit & Chempedak… oK here is the confusing thing when I got here as they only have jackfruit maybe in cairns but the actual fact Jackfruit is the more solid and more flesh fruit and Chempedak is the more pasty durian type. They both taste different are very delicious yum!

Starfruit …. nice looks like a star shape when you cut in slices and its a cool fruit.

Etc Mango, Watermelon, dragon fruit, and etc you can get here.

Its nice to have the knowledge from a tropical fruit country :)

    Must try them all!

    • allow me to add my 1 baht worth

      • coconuts: careful you don't miss and chop your finger off.
      • durians: easier cut from the bottom. going up to stem.
      • mangosteen: squeeze them at the bottom and split the skin to reveal inside. can suck out white flesh. sometimes harder with big ones with thick skin (that's what she said). TBH its easier to just buy the 100% juice. these are so much effort.
    • You forgot to mention that mangosteens are paired with durians.

    • Pineapples are the harder ones to cut right….remove skin, cut diagonally to remove the thorny stuffs so your tongue doesn't stings when you eat too much.

Actually, eating fresh pineapple can cause irritation because the fruit contains bromelain, an enzyme which breaks down proteins including the ones which form the tissues of your mouth.

      • is that what causes your mouth to bleed and be visible on your teeths when you eat to much pineapple?

        • That's never happened to me but I guess so.

  • In Thailand I remember they had the green ones or the black ones which had been burnt and cost a bit more. I asked them what the difference is and they told me that they roast some so the meat comes off easier for you to eat and so they're the ones I always eat. They also can just chop the husk off really easily.

How do people open the coconuts to drink and eat the meat? I am too chicken to chop it off so I have perfected using a holesaw just make sure you rev it up first and makes a nice clean cut… use a vice for safety if required but if you drill the hole in the centre it's usually fine and clean after that.

    • YouTube video referred to further up the comments. This is how I do it, takes less than a minute and is easier than you think.

    • I must be a savage by thinning the husk with an expendable knife and bashing in a hole with a separate butter knife. Gives me a good hunter gatherer satisfaction.

  • Love these. But it's hard to scrape off the young coconut flesh without stripping off some wood with it.

    • choc full of woody goodness.

  • Bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • stupid coconuts

    • they are dangerous
