  • Good deal for $100 dash cam, viofo has some great review on youtube.

  • +1

8% Cashback, basically pays for shipping.

  • Theres also a CPL (polarized lens) for the Viofo which helps for glare. Unfortunately its like $20+

    • Ouch - got the VIOFO A118 for just au$11 in deal. I'll go without the lens.

      • which store ? looks like pretty good deal.

    • +1

I got that lens for my A118. The camera is indeed brilliant quality for the price. The lens however, does not in any way clip on, it just sits over the front and is ver easily knocked off. In a smooth riding car, it stays in place, but it is worth noting it does fall off very easily.

A bit of bluetac would probably do the trick.

      • It clips on for the A119 and A119S.

        • Ah, ok, good to know.
          Cheers.

  • Thanks OP, awesome deal. Any idea where can I buy the GPS module? I already have the A119.

  • -6

Can buy a Xiaomi phone for that that will do the same and more, could even be left recording for hours while the car is off

    • +1

I see what you're getting at but hours of video recording on end? It'll probably run out of battery if the car is off..
      Oh and no wide angle.

      • Aren't mobile camera lenses fairly wide angle anyway?

    • +3

I would not want to risk leaving a mobile phone on windscreen or dashboard when the car is unattended. More likely to invite thieves trying to break in.

      • Yeah, I don't think anyone is breaking into cars to score a sweet Xiaomi.

    • +15

Can buy a Xiaomi phone for that that will do the same and more, could even be left recording for hours while the car is off

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. What you have suggested is utterly pointless and absurd and you may as well stick a potato in the window for all the good it will do.

Have you considered heat? How it stops and starts? How it recycles space? Clearly you don't have a dash cam and you're totally oblivious to the issues that dashcams face along with no idea of what the purpose of a dash camera is.

      • Caroo is an app that works pretty well and covers most of the issues you mentioned, for shorter drives.
On longer drives having the phone constantly recording, charging and being in direct sunlight will cause it to overheat and shutdown.

        • +1

I have a xiaomi mi max… I will give Caroo I try as a dash cam. What type of mount are people using when using their phone as a dashcam?

        • @curtbruce:

I don't use my phones (even superseded ones) as dash cams but those Belkins (30 bucks) and this cheaper one Basus (about 10-15 bucks but with super rigid metal arms) http://www.imediastores.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Baseus-Curve-_Car-_Mount-2.jpg are pretty good.

One thing though during the summer it is less than ideal to leave your phone on the mount under direct sunlight, you will fry the phone in no time (happened to my SGN 1 though it was already 4 years old by that time).

        • @curtbruce:
I use a logitech + drive which works well, but how well it works depends on the phone.
Caroo has a really generous free trial. You can launch it 100 times before the trial ends, then you can uninstall and reinstall to reset the counter.

    • A better solution is to use a usb car charger and use that to charge a 10000mah battery pack, and then have your dash cams attached to your battery pack outputs. You'll get always on recording without needing to hardwire

      • Most battery packs I've seen won't output while they're being charged, so in that setup as soon as you turn the car on the dashcam will lose power.

        • Mmm, only some battery packs will work for this.

        • The Xiaomi battery packs have passthrough charging - ie, they supply power to the device while they are being charged.

  • A119S has better night video recording but lower resolution than A119, hmm..

How would these two models compare to those popular ~$50 ones that come up on here from time to time?

I assume between these the A119S is superior.

Does anyone know if either of these has a function where you do a quick save of a recording?

Can these connect to an app like Blackvues?

    • +3

Got 2 A119S. Watched plenty of reviews between A119 and A119S, the S won over because the wide angle and high res of A119 weren't really all that helpful in providing more accurate videos in daytime, and A119S was quite a bit better in reading plates at night time (huge plus imo).

Check out this vid for a detailed comparison between the 2:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzG576-IG8I

There's a button for saving the current footage as 'important' on the camera so it doesn't get recorded over.

No apps I'm afraid since neither has wifi or BT.

      • seems like xiaoyi is kind of better after watching the youtube
        hmmm

    • +4

Are you talking about the ~$50 G1W-C? These A119/A119S have slightly better daytime video quality and much better night time video quality, plus they are smaller and more discreet, unlike the G1W-C which has large front facade and stick out like a sore thumb.

      • Yep I was referring to the G1W-C. Thanks!

      • Interesting. I was wondering how it compared to the G1W-C as this has been the go to camera for a while. The design is getting a little old internally and externally.

I must admit having WiFi on these cameras would be handy for transferring any highlight files off the camera as this is pain. I sometime forget to put the SD card back in the camera.

      • G1W-C FTW.

    • Better night recording because even though res is only 1080 (not 1440) the FPS is 60, up from 30. Higher frames per minute, clearer images. Maybe the CMOS is a better one as well??

  • +1

Got one from ebay recently for $108 + $25 for a good SD card (lexar 633x) Very easy to install and seems to work well so far.
Reviews are good, but I have nothing to compare it to being my first dashcam.

    Not a good deal.

The A119s with GPS was US$95 free shipping just 2 days ago:
    https://slickdeals.net/f/10118080-viofo-1080p-dash-cameras-v…

Since Zapals conveniently doesn't specify which, these are probably the recently superseded V1. V2 has an improved GPS mount, V1 and V2 cameras and mounts are not compatible.

    • I dont think it says V2 on that page anywhere? and its gone up to $159 AUD now :(

Why would I when it's problematic superseded stock that I didn't think was worth buying… Notice how that "deal" had zero upvotes?

“And nothing except laziness is stopping you or anyone else from looking at slickdeals yourself.”

Well.. I am lazy and fat so best place for me is ozbargain..

  • I got my A119s a few weeks ago for ~ AU $145 from eBay AU local seller with a coupon code. Good camera, I was able to hardwire it so I wouldn't have to worry about using the 12v power socket.

Driving during daytime, I HIGHLY recommend the CPL filter.

    • Don't the filter reduce the quality at night?
After all it is cutting out half the light coming into the camera.

      • +1

Correct, however the CPL filter will reduce the more annoying reflection from the car dashboard during bright daytime. It is a good compromise.

        • Obviously every car and camera mounting will be different, but I haven't found reflection to be a problem at all. If this was a problem I would be inclined to shield the lens with some matt black plastic below the lens.

        • @not a bargain: Not easy to shield the lens because most dashcams have wide-angle lens, shielding the bottom will block off significant bottom portion of the image. It is true not every car will suffer the same amount of dashboard reflection. So you can always buy the cam first without the CPL filter and if you find that your car does suffer from bad reflection then you can order one later on. Of course you may have to pay more when you order it separately.

    • OOC did you use any additional current device to prevent the battery from being dawn down? Or do you only use the camera during driving?

  • Zapals in Australia or they over sea? how long dose it take for delivery?

    • +1

30 days or so. bought a few things in the past and totally forgot about it then it showed up one day.

recently bought some ssd enclosures from the last ozB post on april 11. still nada. it comes. albeit very slowwwwwwlllyyyyy

  • Purchased the A119s from this vendor from one of their previous specials.

Here is an example video from a couple of weeks ago: https://youtu.be/z-dplIaIWgg

It struggles a little in bright light, traffic lights 'strobe' and it tends to flare and -at times- seems to be less than useful when it's dark. I was going to upload an example video from last night, however it appears that all of the videos from the last 2 weeks are corrupted.

    • You aren't by any chance using a Sandisk SD card? I usually view all the videos on mine on the weekend and it looks good (for a 1080p camera that is). For ~$150 I can't really complain.

      • It's got a Patriot 64GB in it just now, but I do have Sandisk cards too.

    • +3

With the bright light, try Angling the camera down a bit. It may record some of your bonnet but the picture will be much better with less bright sky being recorded and cars on the road easier identifiable.
I tried this with my A118 and the results were better

  • Anyone used one of these with a vehicle that has a DAB+ radio? I recently installed (and eventually removed) a GW1-CB in a current model HiLux SR5, and I found both the power supply and the cam pretty much kill DAB+ reception. I'm hopeful the A119 is more friendly with DAB+…

    • No issues with the built in DAB+ radio on my 2017 Honda Civic. I do have the A119s hardwired using add-a-circuit/tap-a-fuse kit eliminating the need to plug it in to the 12v power socket.

    • I'm hopeful the A119 is more friendly with DAB+…

The issue is likely the install and the crap electronics in your Toyota. Your radio shouldn't suffer from poor reception because of a dashcam.

      • +2

Not true. Radios (including good ones) pick up EMR, thats how the radio signal gets from the tower to you radio! Shoddy-made electronics (wrong switching frequency, poor shielding, missing snubbers, ferrites etc to save cost) can cause interference at the same frequency as the radio station (or multiple radio stations) stuffing your reception. Anything with switchmode power conversion can cause this kind of inteference - i.e. pretty much anything designed to run off 12V. Nothing to do with the quality of the radio or the car.

Utter rubbish, I've had around 25 different types of dashcams in my car and up to 8 running at any particular time with zero interference to any of my cars systems including the DAB+ reception. The car should be designed to handle interference without it affecting the operation of any of the cars systemes.

        • +1

@Maverick-au:Umm yeah, so you're obviously the expert, rather than someone with over a decade of EE experience. no way a radio can be designed to completely reject the effect of interference, google Shannon's theorem if you want to actually know something before you spout off nonsense.

        • @Maverick-au:

Switching power supplies and dashcam electronics both have high frequency oscillators inside them, as well as inductors and long wires/traces. All of these will radiate a some EM interference. A badly designed or shielded dash cam can and will radiate into the FM radio band.

Interference lowers the signal-to-noise ratio. Radios can cope with a certain amount of interference without audible problems, but past a certain point it will start to be picked up. Cars with the FM antenna near the dashcam will be more susceptible.

No matter how good your radio is, this can't be avoided. You can only transmit a certain amount of information with a given signal to noise ratio.

  • +1

Best thing about this camera it's size. So discreet and unnoticeable, especially if you run the USB cable around your windshield edge.
Settings are easy and picture looks good.

  • +4

Keep in mind that a new V2 version of the A119S and A119 has just been released. The difference is that flat springs are used for the connection between GPS module and camera, instead of the pogo pins used in the V1. The pin order has also changed, so V1 and V2 cameras/GPS mounts are not compatible. IIRC there is also some anti-vibration foam applied.

This change is to address an issue wherein the camera power is interrupted due to vibration, when powering the camera through the GPS mount. The cameras themselves are the same (aside from the pinout change).

    • Agree, you guys should wait for V2 if you want the GPS module.

I bought an A119S and met this GPS mount issue. It was annoying when I found 90% recorded videos were broken and the rest 10% were in car parks.

Although I am powering through the usb port on camera now, I am still not sure if the unstable mount would affect the video quality.

    • Is the issue really that bad? So the power gets lost due to vibration and ends up not recording?

      • Apparently. Don't own one myself. Keep in mind this is only when powering via the GPS mount. You can still plug the cable into the camera (and GPS will work), it just makes the install a little less neat.

  • Anyone know if insurance even needs GPS location? pretty sure the video it self would be sufficient. Same goes for traffic crashes for police reports.

    • The GPS also tracks your speed, which could potentially be useful in certain incidents.

    • -2

Anyone know if insurance even needs GPS location? pretty sure the video it self would be sufficient. Same goes for traffic crashes for police reports.

Insurance doesn't need video, insurance doesn't need speed, insurance doesn't need GPS, police don't need video, police don't need speed and police don't need gps.

Is it useful to have? Yes because it removes doubt over the date and time as this is set by the GPS (assuming you're not too lazy to set the timezone like many people). Dashcam video is not just about crashes but also about what was seen, you may witness a violent crime, you may witness a vehicle acting strangely or something may happen in your street that causes you to go back and look at the video at a later date.

Of course it pays to have multiple dashcams because they do fail and reliability is always an issue but also to have one with GPS and one without GPS so you can choose the video that you supply.

      • Pretty sure you can strip out the GPS data by re-encoding the video

        • Pretty sure you can strip out the GPS data by re-encoding the video

How do your do this when you have GPS coordinates and the speed overlaid on the video without blurring or cropping both of which show as tampering of the video which reduces the usefulness of the video.

        • @Maverick-au: You can choose not to display it on the video but it will still be in the file's metadata which is what re-encoding strips out.

        • @groook:

You can choose not to display it on the video but it will still be in the file's metadata which is what re-encoding strips out.

Most dashcams store that GPS data in external files to avoid having to do that. The A11x dashcams store it in video like you said I believe.

      • +2

The need for video evidence depends on the situation. It can certainly very quickly remove any doubt in a situation where the other driver is contesting an incident. As for police, it again depends on the situation, but relying on the speed reading from the GPS to dispute a speeding fine is likely not to work. These devices are not a calibrated instrument, unlike speed cameras and detection devices.

        • +1

Agreed. Spoke to the officers at my station (I'm an Admin officer) they said they don't need it as most video footage provided is relation to an incident in their local district. They tend to recognize the land marks. They said exactly the same thing that the GPS is not calibrated but they can use speed=distance/time from the video footage to work out how fast the driver or person in front is going…

So can anyone tell whether these are the v1 or v2 variety?

    • -2

So can anyone tell whether these are the v1 or v2 variety?

Why don't you read the posts above the one you made where it discusses this in detail!

  • Want to buy this for parents who are not tech-savvy. Is this easy to set up? Where are they plugged in to for power?

    • Very easy to set up, insert class 10 micro SD card, set date and time and plug into 12V cigarette socket. When you start the car the camera automatically starts recording and stops when you switch off the car.

      • Unless their car are BMW or Audi which power socket always on even when machine is off :)

That aside, yes very simple. Bought and installed one for my neighbour (not tech savvy but very good mechanic in his 70s) , he been recording all his road trips since :)

        • Well shit, they do have a BMW - is this a trait shared with any/every BMW?

        • +1

@jikijiki: just check if the power socket still powered when car is off. 2015 M3 is off while a 2012 1 series is on.

  • Seems like good for value. Has anyone found that they needed WiFi capability?

    • Yes if you like to view the fed without needing to take the micro sd to a pc and forget to put it back again :)

  • A119 Review. i am not getting paid for this review from anyone.

ok so ive had the A119 for about 12 months and so far this is my experience with it. firstly it has very good video quality for a 100 dollar unit. the only thing i will recomend you do is

REMOVE THE G SENSOR setting, turn it OFF! disable it.

it is a horribly implemented software that when it senses even small bumps from speed humps and that it will lock and save the video you are currently recording which you cannot delete easily without formatting the micro SD card. thus it will eventually fill up the whole card with videos and when you want to actually look back in this situation none of your videos are saved and its all full.

other then this one problem i have had and easily solved this dash cam is the best bang for buck camera that has a low profile mount and the capacitor battery supply is awesome for our Australian summers. the sticker has good adhesion and hasn't come off to this day. the chord is plenty long and i like the tilt on the camera.

I rate this (8.5/10) only gripe was that g sensor which could have cost me dearly if i did not rectify the problem.

    • how do you route the USB cable

      • Once you stick it on the windscreen and connect the cable to the unit run it up to the top of the wind screen and pry it in where the window and roof lining meet then across the top to the frame meets the door then down the frame and into the drivers steering wheel then into your cigarette lighter

        • im too scared to break it lol
          jut bought a new car

        • @furythree: You can also use the cable clips that come with the dashcam to route the cable
