USB OTG Transfer Still Not a "Thing" on iPad/iPhone?

Hi

Just wanted to confirm if this is still a shortcoming of iPad's and iPhone.

On my Android device i can otg a 128gb thumb drive and transfer video files on to Andorid device. However, I still cant do that with iPad or iPhone, right?

I saw they came out with a Sandisk iXpand thumb dive but that is to play stuff off the thumb drive and via the iXpand app only (cant play it in VLC on iPad).

So yeah, to transfer stuff on to a iPad (video files format mp4 size 3gb), you still need a computer and iTunes?
What about those lightning to usb attachments or is that only for cameras to transfer photos and MOV vidoes

Or is there a WIFI transfer app that will allow me to transfer videos from Android device to iPad and play content on VLC on iPad?

EDIT: Just found the app Xender, could this be the iPad WIFI equivalent of an Android OTG cable?

I know right! It supports micro SD cards and includes a file explorer so why not OTG. OTG drive can be treated as a micro SD card that connects via the USB interface. Ok, maybe I am simplifying it too much.

  • IOS lacks a proper file system which is why files have to be stored in a specific app for that particular app to access it and there is no way for other apps to directly access that file. That's probably why files are only accessible via the ixpand app and not vlc. At least that's what I noticed when I was using an iPad. I had to copy files specifically into vlc using iTunes for vlc to be able to play it. And if I wanted to use another app (vlc did not support subtitles at that time) to play the same file, it wasn't possible unless I reconnected my iPad and copied another file into the other app using iTunes which was annoying.

    • It has a filesystem, but apple in all their wisdom decided to lock it down as much as possible because overarching whitelists and general restrictions are far better than actually fixing your horrendous security and letting the user do what they want.

      • Ahh, fair point. Security is probably the reason why the file system is not user and/or app accessible.

  • Apple wants you to pay a premium on their 128gb model instead of 16gb.

No way in hell they'll allow otg to work on their products, let alone memory card expansion feature.
