  • 27" or 29"?

your description says hot price on the 29" panel but everything else points to 27"

Also 6ms for such an expensive monitor hmmm

Also 6ms for such an expensive monitor hmmm

The monitor is an IPS panel which is why it is expensive.
They are much better than the TN panels in cheap monitors.

Tell me something i dont know :), no wait please dont!

The sky is blue and water makes you wet :).

Not everyone knows what an IPS panel is and i wasn't sure if you were one of them.

I am not sure if IPS panels generally have a slower response time than TN panels but from 6ms to 2ms i dont know if our eyes would really notice it.

          • +3

@anthony: Also, it's great for people working in design or photography as it has 110% color gamut. Resolution is higher than typical 27" too. It's really well priced for what it can do. Reviews rave about it :)

I got one a few months back when it was on special from Dell.

  • First it's a 27" monitor not a 29". Second it's an IPS panel not an ISP.

  • yes pays to review what you type and not to rush. Perfect for business applications where 6ms isnt so important but true colour and Dell Warranty & Service is: Get peace of mind with a 3-year limited hardware warranty and 3 years of Dell’s Advanced Exchange Service

          • @Mikinoz: if i was working as a rep i would be posting everyday, i post when i think i see a great deal, by the way i think you should invest in one of the screens lol

I have the old Dell UltraSharp 2709W. Its freakin awesome!!! It beats my 40" Samsung LCD TV EASY! in terms of colour, black levels and pretty sure everything else.

    • black level too? thats interesting

      i measured my 2711 to be 1:1000 and sony 46W5500 to be 1:4000 (+/- 10%).

either the 2711 has average blacks or the tv has awesome blacks lol

      • lol.

I got the old Ultrasharp 27" LCD btw. This one should be better I suppose.

I really don't know how to measure the black levels from the Dell monitor and the LCD TV. I just compare by watching the same media on both screen and the difference was very noticeable. On the TV it is extremely dark (even when the setting is on high) compared to the monitor. You can't see half of the persons face on the LCD TV, its just black. horrible!!!

Another noticeable difference was the colour as well. Much better on the Dell monitor.

thats not the black level. thats got nothing to do with contrast ratio either. what you're talking about is shadow detail and i'm not surprised an ips monitor is better than a tv in that respect.

contrast ratio is the brightness difference between full white (input 255) and full black (input 0). you measure it with a colorimeter.

One review found the U2711 cr to be 950:1, while the 2709W to be 2500:1, so yes the older monitor has a better CR. However that has little to do with the black detail, which reflects signal processing and panel quality than contrast ratio.

          • @kimmik: LOL.

            My bad. Thanks Kim.

I always thought that was black level cause the screen is pitched black! compared with the monitor. lol.

I guess the shadow detail on the TV sucks then. Hate it.

Would you know any aspect of the LCD TV that would beat this monitor? Cause to me, it seems like the monitor beats it in every way. I don't know how to test, just by sight.

            • @shopbot: yeah that monitor is king. picture quality wise the tv has nothing better to offer. to do better than the 2709 in every aspect of pic quality you'll need a calibrated high end such as eizo and nec (starting price around 2k for the same size)

oh and, you probably have the tv setting wrong.

tvs usually default to limited RGB input, where as monitors use full RGB.

unless you set the TV to full rgb, using a computer on the TV will cause very bad black crush and blown whites.

i suggest you look into this.

          • @kimmik: Hey there Kim,

I actually connected my computer to the TV via HDMI using a 512mb ATI 4850. Thats how I'm comparing the media on both screens. And via DVI to my monitor.

I stayed away from RBG cause I thought that was analogue or something.

            • @shopbot: actually this means the tv is almost certainly in the wrong setting.

by RGB i think you meant VGA analogue connection. that shouldn't affect the colour significantly.

what i mean by RGB is the signal format. HDMI and VGA all use RGB format.

full range RGB means the monitor receives a value from 0-255.

limited RGB (which most TVs use by default) is 16-235. http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/622671-rgb-fulllimited-dis…

Your computer definitely, and invariably outputs 0-255. This means, if you TV is set on limited RGB, everything below 16 is displayed as black, leading to black crush. everything above 235 is displayed as full white, leading to blown white detail.

I can almost guaranty this is the problem you're experiencing, as i had this problem with my sony tv before.

I suggest you look in the manual of the TV, or in the display settings of the TV, to find the option of changing the HDMI input of the computer to fullRGB.

then the black crush you were describing should be immediately fixed!

              • @kimmik: lol.

Sorry for all the noobish questions.

When your talking about the RGB, are you talking about the settings inside the TV?

Because I also have an RGB input on the back of the TV, which you would use the VGA cable to connect the computer to TV.

So are you talking about the using the RGB cable and not the HDMI cable OR the settings inside the TV?

On the back of the TV, I have a HDMI in, RGB in, and also a DVI in. I chose the HDMI input to connect with my computer.

                • @shopbot: yeah when i say full RGB vs limited RGB that's a setting inside the TV

when you say RGB input on the back of the TV, what you mean is the VGA input on the back of the TV.

RGB is red green blue, a format of video signal. HDMI and VGA and DVI all use RGB (in most cases).

If you want to test whether your TV has black crush and blown white, do this:

in Firefox or Opera (only!) open: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

go to the section "black level" and follow instruction.

If you cannot see the squares less than 20, then the TV is definitely in limited RGB mode. ideally you should see every single square down to 1.

Some TVs dont have a full RGB mode. in that case i dont really know how to help you. Maybe htere's a setting in the graphic card to output limited RGB to your TV, but you'll have to look that up.

                  • @kimmik: Woah. Thanks Kim.

I will give everything a go and that I understood it abit better.

                    Thanks.

    • Samsung make a panel called an AFFS which they probably use in their TV's.

AFFS is supposed to better than IPS

  • man that much and no touch screen even!

    • It is an IPS panel

      • yeah i noticed from the comments above!

but would it kill them to put it in :P (touch screen)

        • Personally I don't think I will ever get a touch screen monitor.

It drives me nuts each time a co-worker comes to my desk to show me something on my screen, and in the process of pointing on my screen they leave finger marks all over it….

          • @BlitzR: its called electrified touchscreen, wish i had one! :)

    • If you don't know what an IPS panel is, you probably don't even need one.

  • +2

I'm very very tempted to buy this since I missed out on the EOFY deal dell had for $679…. The closest I could get to that deal was by using the 15% off discount code :(…. Wife isn't going to be happy with me :/

    • maybe you could skip the 2711 all together and get the 3008, which will be on special in the coming 2 wks. possibly a big discount too, and possibly stackable with 15% coupons

      • to late… Impulse kicked in and I picked it up 30mins ago :/

        • Sweet Blitz. I doubt you will regret it. Awesome monitor!!!

  • Yeah, still a bit expensive for me; but shipping is fairly cheap! $24 for 2 to Brissy!

    • cheaper to pickup since there are 10 units at Fortitude Valley

  • I purchased one of these on a previous deal for $679.32. Great panel. Touch sensitive buttons take some getting used to. The only real negative for me is that the built in card reader doesn't do CF cards, but that's a non-issue for most.

    • LOL. Really? Even my old Dell 27" Ultrasharp supports CF cards. Weird. Would have thought the newer model would include it as well.

  • Does the card reader do SDHC?… Should do.
