  Before you buy, check your local library for ebooks of the ones you are after. Through my library I can download the ebook I want just before travelling so I have it on my phone (in the OverDrive app) while I am away. I ntoe that they don't have every ebook, but I wouldn't buy one that I can easily get 3 weeks access for free.

  Do people still use them?

  For Asia I found Travelfish guides much better and they were free.
  But these days with ubiquitous internet, you can just scan the forums
