NZ Snow Trip Treble Cone July. Any Accommodation Advice?

Hi all, planing a snow trip in NZ for July. Never done NZ before just looking tips on:

Accommodation: looking at booking a jucy camper, but will it be too cold at night? Where would you park it at night? Or potential accommodation options for 2 maybe 3 mates. Worth booking a car as well as a camper to get up and down mountain (an extra $25 per day between 3)?

Gear: Got my own, but Jetstar now charge $100 over and above baggage to get it from Adelaide. Any good hire deals on snowboards?

Conditions: Mid July snow cover? Wind? Treble Cone contingency plan?

Food: Good eating options for an ozbargainer near Treble / wanaka?

Cheers all

  • Accomodation: Find an air bnb or something, you really want to sleep in a juicy van with 2 other blokes?

Gear: Hiring a full set of gear costs around $300. Less if you are just hiring a board/skis. Try taking all your gear but your skis/board and you might be able to hire for around $150.

Conditions: I think Treble Cone sucks, Cardrona is much nicer. If you stay in Wanaka you are pretty much in the middle of the two. You can get a 5 day ski pass which lets you into either mountain.

Food: There's a nice burger place in Wanaka. Forget it's name. 10-15 NZD for an awesome burger. Otherwise 2 min noodles from the supermarket. Make sure you take food up with you to the mountain because the food there is super expensive.

    • Cheers. Shared lasagne, tuna mournay, curries worked well in the past. Burger and a beer sounds like the go one night.

Was looking at the Jucy ski for free deal, but I think that is Treble Cone only for 6 days. Will do a Cadrona day anyway for a look.

  • I did the Jucy camper Treble Cone trip a couple of years back. Yes, it's too cold. The blankets the van comes with are pretty thin, and it got down to -6 while we were there. That was a particularly cold snap, but the average minimum is -2. We ended up borrowing some blankets from the caravan park. I'd recommend taking sleeping bags. You can also run the vans heater for five minutes before you go to bed, it really helps :-).

Glendhu Bay Motor Camp was the cheapest place I found to legitimately camp, it's on the road to Treble Cone about halfway from Wanaka.

Do you shopping at Pak n Save in Queenstown before you drive over to Wanaka.

July at Treble Cone can be dicey, you might not have much snow depth yet. August/September has more snow and nicer weather too by September. https://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/New_Zealand/Treble_Cone_…

PS: Treble cone has amazing terrain, but it's definitely more suited to the advanced skier. A blue run there is roughly equivalent to a black run at an average Aussie resort, so unless you're comfortable on the hardest runs on local fields you're not going to have much to ski over there.

    • Yeah the Jucy camper and lift pass for $70 is appealing. We have decent sleeping bags, so should be OK. Might as well get one each to get the lift passes.

Looking at council regulations you could Park off the track, just not a public place like a carpark.

Alternatively, maybe share a powered site. Not sure how many campers you can place on one site? How much was Glendhu per night?

Special Thanks for the difficulty info. Have ski'd most of Mt Hotham. So should be OK.

  • I would recommend one of the backpackers in wanaka.
base backpacker, yha, or wanaka backpacker.

I like lake wanaka, nice scenic place, especially up treble cone. and quite, but with something to do, but not too rowdy. and the waxroom is a great place to service your gear.

Now. treble cone as a resort.
I love it. I like how steep it is. It is not recommended for beginners, not much of a park. However I am not a park rat.
the terrain favours skiers a little more than boarders. It is also easier to assess off piste areas as well. You have to earn your turns though.

Save a bit of legs to get home from the second lift. It is more than 5km of piste from the second chair to the carpark.

If you stay in wanaka, you can split your time between wanaka and cardrona.

  • Cardrona is my pick if you're staying in Wanaka, we often drive from Queenstown and it's a great resort good mix of runs.

  • How's the road up the mountain? Take a camper up, or will a car be better.

    • You won't get a camper up the road to Cardrona, it can be a bit sloppy at times.

      • Cheers

        • Have you visited any NZ mountains before? The access roads can be a bit dicey, The Remarkables have done a lot to make their road safer by tarring in sections and adding more guard rails. I would say none of them are suitable for camper vans. Enjoy your trip.

        • @CLoSeR: Will be my first time in NZ mountains, only done Aussie mountains before. Fingers crossed for snow mid July.
