Where is The Best Place to Buy a TV?

We are looking to get a new TV and hubby has pretty much decided what model he wants and what price he wants to pay.
Most are advertised at slightly above the price so hubby is sure he can negotiate to get it at the price he wants.

Question is - where is the best place to buy? Regarding negotiating on price, service, reliability etc.
We have looked at Retravision, Harvey Norman, JB HIFi and Myer. We haven't yet looked online so suggestions for retailers there would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

What TV is he looking at?.. perhaps we can find somewhere you can get it from cheaper.

BTW, a trick I use often is price matching between HN stores.

Store A will never question, or call store B.. so once you have your price, you call store B say store A can do it for $100 less and ask for a price match, for large items it's also good to throw delivery into the price.

My experience has been that HN never can come close to anyone elses price, plus it usually takes ages to find someone to even help (Myers is even worse!), so I no longer even bother checking there anymore.

Retravision were TOPS in matching prices. I'll always try them in future as they were good even though their catalogue prices suck.

Dealing with JB can be hit or miss depending on the sales guy. Sometimes there you wonder whether they want to sell anything at all! There are some seriously inflated egos walking the sales floor at my local JB.

Find an empty, dead store where the staff will need to make up their number for the day and you are more likely to wangle the best price.

      • I will try to find the best price online, or through forums.

Then approach HN and ask them to price match, the phone works just as well as in person. Once you have that then just apply the above method a through a few stores (if your game) and you can be pretty confident that you've got a good price.

  • I've bought a couple of TVs in Melbourne.
I go Harvey Norman in QV to Myer then to JB Hifi on Elizabeth/Lonsdale and Sony Store (if it's a Sony) across the street. Always ask for their best price, don't compare sticker prices.

  • Thanks for the replies so far.
He has set a budget of $1000 and is looking at the Samsung Series 6 40" LCD (LA40C650). He would really like the same in the 46" (LA46C650) but we are not sure our budget will stretch that far.
We had had a hit with a sales person at JB and also found Retravision good whilst information gathering.
