I'm trying to look for a SYD > HNL > SFO > SYD flight without stopovers using Momondo, but it looks difficult to not get something with a lot of random stopovers and looping back and forth. Am I missing something here or is it just easier to buy SYD <> SFO return, then separately add in a separate SFO <> HNL flight in between?

Yes - when I do this and select 'non-stop' for all legs I get ~$4,000 flying Hawaiian Air x2 and Qantas once :(
What are your departure dates for each leg?
Oct 4,6 and 11 - random dates but fairly close to what I'm looking for
flew something similar a few years back and found it was cheaper to land in lax from hnl and hop over to sfo that way but things may have changed

On Momondo.com you need to select Multi-city from the drop down menu and use Add another trip
input:
SYD-HNL
HNL-SFO
SFO-SYD
with respective dates of travel.
