Help with GTX 1070

My GTX 780 just died on me, currently running a qnix 2710 1440p 120hz monitor so i assume a GTX 1070 is the best option for me, or is a 1060 enough? If its a Gtx 1070 does anyone know of any good deals on one, thanks.

If you have the cash to spend, a GTX 1070 would be the best option but most game play decent on a 1060.
Then again, it depends on what games your playing.

Have the same monitor running at 100Hz. The 1070 is more than adequate for most games at that resolution and frame rate - the 1060 will struggle noticeably unless you have all your settings on low.

EDIT: 120Hz might be pushing it a little, depending on the game. Overwatch typically hits my frame rate cap of 105 with all settings maxed out.

It is not more than adequate, you will not be able to hit anywhere near 120FPS on most AAA titles without significant image quality compromises.

Which leave you to aim for 60FPS - which is easy - or put up with screen tearing with higher FPS - unless you push FPS to whatever makes it dissappear. Say 120FPS… (this is assuming the QNIX has no G-Sync adaptive refresh - if it does then happy days and this doesn't apply)

If you're going down to the GTX 1060 territory, well there's plenty of competition from the likes of:
    RX 470 (4GB)
    RX 570 (4GB)
    RX 480 (4GB)
    RX 480 (8GB)
    GTX 1060 (3GB)
    GTX 1060 (6GB)
    RX 580 (4GB)
    RX 580 (8GB)
    ….it's a more Bang-for-Buck mainstream category.

Once you go to the GTX 1070 (8GB), there's less competition, so you'll definitely be paying a little more premium.
With that said, I think the GTX 1070's a great card, in particular the EVGA Superclocked/Zotac Mini versions.
It'll do VR titles much better. It can do 1440p/60fps/Ultra for all/most games.
And in the future, you can even crank it upto 4K/60fps (FXAA, Long Draw-Distance, Medium-4K-textures, High Settings) if your monitor supports it.
But one thing you should look into is to make sure your CPU doesn't bottleneck your system, and that your monitor supports FreeSync or G-Sync.

4k60 on a 1070 might be difficult, especially as games get more demanding.

      I'm running 4k60 on a 1080 and it still isn't a stable 60 on some games.

      • You'd think so, but its the actually the other way.
Games are becoming MORE optimised for 4K… thanks to Nvidia Pascal, PS4 Pro, Xbox Scorpio.
You can see this with 4K-Texture packs being released. And turning off MSAAx8 on 1080p, saves quite a bit of performance, when FXAA is just as good on 2160p.

Not to mention other benefits to 4K like 4K movies and streaming, bigger Windows desktop workspace especially for content creation and Excel worksheets. And of course VR!!

At this point, getting a 1440p monitor/experience is like getting a 720p TV when FullHD was out.
And a lot of people will say 1440p @144Hz is a better experience.
        I will say Nay.

144Hz (especially at 1440p) is just as difficult to obtain as 60fps on 4K. And the amount of 144Hz or even 120Hz gamers is STILL a minority and this doesn't seem to be changing.
And let's not forget that most game experiences don't really benefit going from 60fps -> 144Hz. Only fast-twitch games like League of Legends, CS Go and Overwatch benefit the most. Games are actually focussing more on dynamic environments these days; example Witcher 3.
Also let's not forget about the GAME DEVELOPERS. They usually start/work on getting their games optimised for 30fps thanks to Consoles. Or 60fps for most PC gamers. Very little care about >120fps.
Dirty ports make 1440Hz gaming impossible, whereas 4K can still be obtained on dirty ports with the faster hardware or even Community Mod Packs (see: GTA V).

So… 4K Gaming will become mainstream.
1440Hz Gaming will remain a niche.
Optimisations are there or coming for the new resolution.
1440p is a stepping point, and a good one to fall-back to when needed.
4K/60fps Gaming will be possible on the GTX 1070 provided the game is optimised enough and you adapt your settings for it.

(There's people pushing VR/4K on their mainstream RX470-4GB just to give you an idea !)

        • I'm not arguing against 4k60 (I'm using one!) but imo you really need either a 1080 or better a 1080 Ti to enjoy it properly. Doing so on a 1070 would work but it'd always be that little bit short.

I already kinda regret not waiting for the Ti… the 1080 holds at 50-60 FPS on many games. That little bit more would be perfect.

        • @elusive:
          Not sure why the neg.

But yeah, obviously the GTX 1080 will do better.
And its really less about the Clockspeed/Core count and more about the Bandwidth you get with GDDR5X/HBM2.
I never said a GTX 1070 will do 4K/60fps all the time.
I said the GTX 1070 is a great card, can do 4K, but requires some tweaking.
It's all about adjusting the Settings so that you can hit that mark without compromising the Image Quality.
The same applies to the GTX 1080, GTX 1080Ti, and Titan X… as I can restrict/bottleneck any if I went crazy with certain settings. Remember Crysis?

As it is, most games' Ultra/Very High (or Advanced) Settings will be very taxing on the GPU for sometimes quite a negligible/little improvements to the actual visuals. Games that are optimised and with finer grade of visual control are better for gamers; eg GTA V which scales very neatly.
          Why?
It all comes down to Optimisations!

The best* gaming experience you can have today is:
          - 1080p
          - 60fps
          - High Settings (MSAAx8, Medium draw distance)
….as that is what most game developers target. It gets you the best visual fidelity at the least performance expense.
You could easily run this on a Core i5-6400, 8GB RAM DDR4-2133, GTX 1050 (2GB).
It is what is MOST OPTIMISED at the moment.
Anything more is just extra flair that requires more and more performance, till you hit the point of diminishing returns.
It's an open-secret in the gaming community, hence why, you buy the basics then throw all your budget at the GPU !
Coming back to my original point: 4K is going mainstream which means the Optimisations will be coming too. Sure games will become ever more visually impressive but not everyone wants or needs those Advanced Settings (like HairWorks) but would rather games that are coded properly and optimised for their system. I mean what if you can turn on a Setting that gives "realistic shadows to character ears" but it reduces your framerate from 70fps down to 40fps would you still apply it? No, of course you wouldn't !

PS You shouldn't feel bad about your GTX 1080, since you would've had it from June 2016 almost 11 months ago! It's a very capable card, in fact, I sort found the 1080Ti underwhelming because of it.

*best in terms of "bang-for-buck" when discussing the efficiency/performance needed.
*no offence to those Ear-Shadow Fetish people

          I'm not sure either, considering I didn't neg…

1060 will struggle with a lot of titles at 144hz/1440p, if you only play eSports titles (LoL, DoTA, CS:GO) it will do the job however.

I'd definitely recommend the 1070, I have the MSI Gaming X 1070 and it is awesome for my 144hz monitor, obviously crushes the eSports titles and when you play AAA games the FPS can bounce between 60-100 but there is very little noticeable screen tearing at high refresh rates, it's only when it drops below 60FPS that screen tearing is a huge deal. The thing I like about the 1070 is when playing an AAA title you can drop the settings a bit and hit that sweet, sweet 120/144FPS whilst still having respectable image quality.

    Go the 1070 for sure.

  • Cheers for all the help everyone, i've decided to go for the 1070 does anyone have a good deal on one?

    • i have a GTX1070 on my 27" 1440p Dell LCD, always frame rates over 90-120 with high settings and around 50-80 on ultra

    • Interested in this too!

    • Cheapest 1070s I can find so far are:
      - ASUS $500 from futu (Ebay 20% deal) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232311798209
      - Galax $519 from Umart or MSY http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=gtx%201070&star…
      - The rest seem to be $550-600 looking at msy prices.

The Galax and Asus seem pretty uninspiring. Anywhere else to look?
