Can confirm my ANZ travel Adventures card is attracting a 50% bonus. Woohooooooo

    • +1

      very nice!!

    • +4

      That is ridiculous(ly good)..

    • I believe ANZ 35% Booster Offer need to set up auto-redemption ?

      • +1

Set it up, let it transfer, cancel it before the end of the month. That's what I did last year (and will do again this year).

anzrewards.com appears to be down right now so I can't log into my account and verify it, but every reason to believe it will be the same as last year.

      • +9

According to this works for either manual or auto redemption.

        1. ANZ 35% Booster Offer: The ANZ Booster Offer is available for every successful manual redemption or Auto-Redemption of ANZ Reward Points to Velocity Points made from 1 May 2017 to 31 May 2017.
        2. Velocity 15% Frequent Flyer Offer: The Velocity Frequent Flyer Offer is available for every successful manual redemption or Auto-Redemption of ANZ Reward Points for Velocity Points made from 1 May 2017 to 31 May 2017.
      • Does not need auto redeption for a total 50% bonus for ANZ travel adventures card

      • +1

Thanks heaps doublezero1! Was wondering as well!

    • Just transferred 130,000 points from my ANZ card to velocity 3 weeks back as I was closing the card. Dammit.

  • Does Velocity point expire?

  • +4

Anybody here on OzBargain up to 1 Billion Points yet ???

    • +9

There's that guy in the classified ads always buying points. I'm sure he'd be close by now

    • +5

      Yup.
I'm almost up to 1 Billion points.
      Just 999,999,99° go!
      Wait.
      American billion or British billion?
      :)

  • Noob question:
I know upgrading to business/first class is the best way to use points and I have over 200,000 amex points.
Would like some advice on what to do.

    • +10

I know upgrading to business/first class is the best way to use points

No it's not, that's a waste of points… It means you'll go on less trips for free…

      • +1

dont upgrade its a waste just get more free flights

        • Just use those points on another flight.

        • +2

@0p: depends on the flight, I find it very worthwhile heading to Perth for instance, particularly if it's overnight.

        • @mackaxx:

Exit row does fine for this, I did it on Sunday night.

        • @nafe: exit row has fully horizontal reclining seats, business studio, nice food and fancy champagne? Didn't know that?

        • @mackaxx:

It's an overnight flight, all you need is to be able to sleep. Fancy food and champagne at 4am Sydney time?

        • @nafe: food and drink aside, horizontal sounds good to me at 4am.

    • +6

Really depends what you're interested in!

I'd recommend taking a look at http://www.pointhacks.com.au - they have a number of guides with ideas on how to spend Amex points.

    • I think he really wanted to know if it was better to have 230000 velocity points vs 200000 qantas points not criticism on his opinion. So hopefully this helps a bit qff vs vv points

      • +1

You can't transfer Amex points to Qantas unless you are on the Ascent Premium program (Platinum charge card or similar).

So not likely what mmd was asking…

    • +1

If you plan on doing long haul international upgrades with virgin, make sure you are at least velocity gold, otherwise you will be ineligible. Domestic is no troubles. Also virgin has very limited route options internationally.

      Have areas of this
      http://www.pointhacks.com.au/velocity-points-virgin-australi…

    • +9

I would use 180,000 of those points and transfer to 270,000 Marriott Rewards (via SPG). That will give you a voucher for 7 nights at a category 5 hotel and 120,000 American Airlines points (redeemable on OneWorld with very little tax/fees). If American Airlines is not your thing, you could also opt for 85k Qantas points instead. More info on this in last months AmEx Explorer thread.

      • +1

Noting that 120k AA points can be redeemed for way more than 85k QF points - the Marriott deal can be exceptionally high value, I just wish I could get up to the 180k mark!

        • +1

Just keep on spending! As an existing AmEx cardholder, I still managed to get my 100,000 bonus points. Also signed up my other half via my referral link so that's another 130,000 points. Very true about AA points but this freq flyer game can be a bit overwhelming for some hence my comment you can also just go for the easy option of Qantas points instead.

        • @bozbargain: My total CC spend, across both Amex and Visa, is about $1.5k per month, so that might take a while. :P

        • +1

          @ajdlinux:

Buy the points through SPG. Sometimes they have 30-50% discount for 30k block. Buy for both you and your partner and with the Amex Explorer bonus you should easily get the Marriot Package with points to spare.

        • @nightelves: that's true - I'll have to do the maths but it could be worthwhile indeed…

(I wish I had a partner to take with me…)

        • +1

          @ajdlinux:

Happy to be your +1. I'm pretty cheap to look after

      • By the way this is only in the US and Canada, right?

        • +1

Not sure what you mean but you can redeem the Marriott voucher anywhere in the world and as an Australian, you're also free to have an AA account and keep/redeem miles as anyone else.

        • @bozbargain:
Ok, I thought it was only applicable to Hotels in US and Canada. Thanks for confirming.

      • Btw, there is also currently a 25% transfer bonus when transferring from Hotel points to AA miles, so you would get 150,000 Miles !

        https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/partners/ho…

        • That would be even better but are you sure that also goes miles acquired through Marriott Miles & More? They normally feature that on their page (as they now do for United) but it still says 120k points for AA?
          http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi

        • @bozbargain:

Yeah it is. I have redeemed a similar offer for British Airways and United and both got the bonus transfer after it came across. Better off waiting for bonus transfer from Alaska Airlines. They offer better rewards redemption and allows 1 stopover per one way

        • @nightelves: Cool, would you mind letting us know when such a promo pops up please?

      • Can bank issued Amex does the same thing? Does AA points or Marriott Rewards have a reasonable expiry policy?

    • Mmd, how many of you will be traveling?

    • Subjective views, on a points to dollar basis upgrading to business (value differs by program) is a great way to use points if that is something important to you. As others have mentioned below however since you are here on Ozbargain we'll assume you want to travel further rather than travel comfortably ;)

  • +2

I've got about 500,000 points my my CBA card that I've collected over many years. Am I better off using it for other things or transferring it to Velocity?

15% doesn't sound like a lot. If it was like the ANZ bonus 50% then that's a no brainer.

    • +1

It's about as good as it gets with CBA and they only tend to participate once a year in this deal unlike the other banks. That 50% bonus isn't the norm. Given a number of the banks have already revalued their rewards programmes recently and the Commonwealth hasn't (yet), this may be your last opportunity to transfer them to Velocity before a devaluation.

    • +2

I just used 480,000 points on Velocity to get two Etihad business class fares to Europe (equivalent cost around $16,000) BUT got slugged for $3K taxes and fees. looking at the posts on Aust. Frequent Flyer, it looks like redeeming on Krisflyer with Singapore is a better deal with less points and less taxes/fees.

      • +4

I feel for you, those taxes are ridiculous (it's almost like they want you to pay for an economy ticket and use your 480k points to 'upgrade' to business)! Also, flying Etihad business class means you risk that the highlight of your trip will become the actual flight… Enjoy!

      • Ouch that's heavy. You could have flown Suite for that price with Singapore Airlines.

        • I did have some buyer's remorse after I booked Etihad, but it would have been 40K more points for 2 x MEL/LHR which is not a lot in the scheme of things, but availability was difficult with Singapore. I pretty well got the flights (A380) on all the sectors I wanted when I booked on Etihad. I did a redemption flight to Singapore in Suites once and it is awesome.

        • Actually I forgot about the 1.35 conversion from Velocity to Krisflyer, so Suites would have been an extra 232,800 points. Now that's ouch!

    • I have an option for you if you would like. PM me for more info please

  • +1

Good chance to move citibank signature rewards points before they devalue on the 15 June?

    The rate use to be 1.5 citi rewards = 1 velocity. Now it's 2 citi = 1 velo. After 15 June it's 2.5 = 1 velo.

    • Oh no I didn't know would be worse after 15 of June. Time to find a better card, we got it free for life though.

    • +2

I thought only the rate exchange for Kris flyer was changing, not velocity?

      • I think you are correct. I just assumed it was all FF programs.

    • I am with Citibank Rewards too…Have about 140,000 points….Not sure if it is worth moving them over….

    • Since you can book flights directly with Citi rewards, maybe compare where you can go with velocity's points table?

  • +1

There's also 25% bonus instead of 15% for people who holds AMEX charge card.

  • Just want to clarify, with Westpac it will be a 15% bonus setting up auto redemption…so is that on all the points I already have or just on what I earn for the month after activating it? Last time this came around it seemed it was for the month activated, not previous points…I could be wrong though.
    Thanks

    • It seems that on Altitude Rewards website, it says the entire accumulated balance will transfer over on every (next) statement period. Not sure if anyone else had prior experience?

      • Can anyone confirm or deny this please?

  • -6

I would be grateful if someone could enlighten me as I am clueless. Can I transfer my Qantas points to Velocity? How do I connect Velocity to Amex? I can't even find how to disconnect it from Qantas. Is it worth switching - I am not flying, just buying gift cards.

  • +2

Doh, transferred my entire ANZ Rewards balance only two days ago :(

    • +4

I just transferred my points last Friday and the status is submitted but not Completed. I called to ANZ service to ask for cancelling and it succeeded. If nothing unexpected happens my points will be back within 1 hour.

  • Is it worth transferring over some AMEX and Flybuys points to take advantage of the promo even if I don't necessarily have any plans to book travel with virgin in the near future?

    • I wouldn't think so. If it's ANZ's 50% then probably.

    • +1

      It depends on your situation.

I don't prefer to upgrade to first/business class.
I also find fares way cheaper via agents or IWTF during sale season compared to booking flights via points($0.01 being my conversation rate per point - OZB classified rate)

For example, you have 2000 flybuys points sitting in your account, which you can only use at Coles group.

      With this deal 2000 flybuys = 870 velocity points + 130 bonus points(15% bonus) = 1000 velocity points($10)… which is same value

If you want to offload those points by selling or family transfer, you have cash in hand in this case unlike flybuys points or dollars

  • Nice, have been waiting for this!

  • Ahhh I literally transferred all my point from ANZ a week ago… Anyone had luck in the past emailling to get any extra points? I'm gonna try and see how I go!

    • If not completed, you can cancel it by calling them.

  • -5

I have a myki… Can I get any bonus from transferring my (negative) balance?

    • +1

Yes of course you can. What a silly question! I can't believe you've been negged 3 times!

  • +1

RE: auto redemption. Once setup, check the date of auto redemption. Just checked mine and it says 2/6/2017. so beware.

    • Can you immediately cancel it to keep it as before?

      • yea, had to do that.

        • +1

I checked Westpac Altitude Rewards website, and it has a page for this offer with one of the T&C as this:

          1. To receive a 15% Velocity Points bonus, an Altitude Rewards customer must be a Velocity member and must be opted-in to Auto-Redemption between 1 May and 31 May 2017. If you set up Auto-Redemption after your statement cycle in May 2017, you will receive a 15% Velocity Points bonus on points transferred in June 2017. If you set-up Auto-Redemption before your statement cycle in May 2017, you will receive a 15% Velocity Points bonus on points transferred in May and June 2017. Please allow 3 business days after your credit card statement cycle date for bonus Velocity Points to appear in your Velocity Frequent Flyer Membership Account. 15% Velocity Points bonus offer is part of Velocity’s Billion Point Giveaway campaign, visit go.velocityfrequentflyer.com/billion-points/learnmore for full Terms and Conditions. 1 billion Bonus Point cap applies across all participating Velocity partners.

I set mine up and it says next date of redemption as 02/06/2017. From T&C, we should be fine…?

        • @lilkid28: you are right. need to opt in in that time period vs redemption in that time period. but not sure how much trouble it is to argue that point if it doesn't come to fruitition. but you are right. it should work. hope the points don't run out.

        • +1

          @scheps:

Best to save the T&C now as proof later if any conflict arises.

  • Does QFF have similar promotions? I have a bunch of CBA points and I'm tossing up which program to transfer to. I have both Velocity and QFF accounts.

    • QFF do sometimes have promotion like these. However, it's mostly for people who previously transferred points before

    • Can CBA points actually be transferred to Qantas? It is very rare that cards can do this.

      • They can be, but there are a few conditions (I'm on the Rewards page now so I'll paste below):
To opt-in to Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct you need to call 13 1661, there is a $30 annual fee charged for opting in. Please note that all CommBank Awards points earned prior to the date you opt-in cannot be transferred to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

From my own experience I would retain those CBA points to just use as Flight Centre $s

        • I don't have any CBA cards, but the usual setup would be where you just earn QFF points directly (via monthly sweep to account) - not sure if that is what the above refers to or not.

Very uncommon to be able to earn CBA (or any bank's) reward points and then be able to choose to transfer them to QFF at will.

  • Flybuys site is buggered, try again later on.

    • +1

Was earlier for me, but worked just now.

  • It's a decent deal and I've transferred points with the 15% bonus rate in the past.

If you're looking for business class flights though, it seems like it may be more worthwhile to hold onto your Amex/bank rewards points and transfer them down the line to SQ KrisFlyer or CX Asia Miles when you're closer to booking. Apparently Singapore and Cathay have much more favourable availability and redemption costs.

  • -6

If your goal is to get FF points into Velocity, and you also hold a Krisflyer account, note that it is typically better to transfer points from your CC to Krisflyer, and then transfer from Krisflyer to Velocity. The redemption rates for reward points to Krisflyer and Velocity are typically the same. ie. Citibank provides a redemption rate of 2 points per Krisflyer or Velocity point. But the kicker is Krisflyer provides a rate of 0.74 points per velocity point (it's 1.35 velocity points to 1 Krisflyer mile), thereby surpassing this 15% bonus.

    • +5

      No it doesn't.

      It's 1.35 Krisflyer -> 1.00 Velocity
      AND
      1.35 Velocity -> 1.00 Krisflyer

You have a reduction in points no matter which way you go.

      • +3

Pigey is right. Although sometimes it is cheaper to book awards via KrisFlyer than Velocity, so may be worth transferring there either way.

  • do they ever do 20% bonus or is 15% the usual?

    • never seen 20%, I'd say the usual May 15%, next is in October I believe

  • Has anyone done the maths to see if it's actually worth converting to Velocity?

Not sure if my maths is wrong because my brain has stopped working now that it's dark, but from just comparing Amplify to velocity and assuming $1 spent = 1 point (from CC), 5000 amplify points can get you a $20 gift card (3800 points worth) + 1200 balance. If you convert that 5000 amplify points to velocity, where 2 Amp points = 1 velocity point, you get 2500 velocity points, 2875 points after 15% bonus. To get a $20 gift card on Velocity rewards, you need 4500 points.

Perhaps check the conversion rate to calculate whether this conversion is in your best interest or not before making a move.

    • You can book flights with most CC reward stores (without transferring points). Perhaps check where you can go with that & compare to velocity's points table.

With other CC reward stores, the gift card option costs the most compared to other options, so it may not be the best comparison…

  • +2

Definitely not worth putting the flybuys across to velocity from what I can tell,

    • I guess depends what you want out of the points, if you just miss few to get a free flight might still worth it.
