We bought an old house about 18 months ago which it has been renovated in kitchen, bathroom and laundry. There are big bang sounds from the pipes under the house every night or morning when someone opens a tap in the kichensink or flush toilet. Even when the washing machine is running. We have googled the symtomp and found the cause is from poorly installation. We do not know how to fix it completely but hiring a plumer wouls cost a lots so if anyone who has been in this situation, please share your thoughts.
It is really annoying!!!

Not always, sometimes it's too high water pressure.
You have several options:
Get a plumber to fit a pressure reducing valve.
You can try turning down the water from the mains tap, that may help but it really only affects water flow and not pressure (but it's easy to do and may solve your issue).
Fit water hammer arrestors but don't get the cheap ones, Sioux Chief are the best but they go for around $80 each and have to be fitted close to each tap that has an issue so it may be expensive.
Get a plumber to fit a vertical pipe that's sealed off that acts as a hammer arrestor.
- If you don't know what a hammer arrestor is, it's basically an air chamber that compresses and absorbs the shockwave caused when opening and closing taps.
thank you for your advises, really appreciate it ! I might try to fit the arrestor to the issue tap first to see how it goes.
where do I find Sioux Chief brand ? I could not see them in Bunnings. Cheers
Hi daywalker282, hope this message finds you well.
I was wondering if you ended up fixing this problem?
I have the same problem and trying to fix it :)
Thanks

Very common with old copper piping especially if saddles have given up and renovations with a mix of flex pipe.Try the DIY one first, if the problem persists ggo for a crawl in your void whilst someone is up top cranking the taps to search for where it is hitting the structure

Get a plumber to fit a pressure reducing valve. This what fixed ours. We initially had a 500kpa one fitted to the dishwasher that was noisy when the solenoid cut the water off which fixed that problem. Later had one fitted to the whole house to match the hot water pressure reducing valve. That fixed all the problems including variations in shower temperatures.
I had similar problem at my previous house. Changed the washer in the tap and problem solved.
Used these ones from Bunnings. Maybe worth trying this first before spending big $$

If you can get under the house - add a few saddles to secure the pipes to any beams that they pass over. This may reduce the hammer. I installed individual taps at each wall outlet (sinks, toilets, etc) to control the flow. mixer taps are notoriously bad for hammer, but i found the toilet was ccasing this as well, so simply reduced the flow when filling up the cistern after a flush and it works a treat.
Try turning off the cold water supply valve for the hot water system and then test again for water hammer, quite often the jumper valve in the hot water isolation valve will cause the water hammer, failing that, think of all the valves that are left In The on / open position, turn each one off and test for water hammer. 95% of the time the cause is the washer/jumper in the tap vibrating. You can replace the valve or remove the washer and pinch the stem with some pliers, this will restrict the Movement of the washer jumper and reduce the water hammer.
Good luck, hope that helps
I had this before and it lasted a year or so and then resolved by itself, super weird.
