I can't recommend going to Hong Kong during their summer months. But good price for flights with baggage

    • I didn't check that bit. Let me guess, stinking hot.

      • +1

Humid hot and when you are on the streets you get blasted by the hot air from the countless airconditioning units.

        • Thanks

Sounds like NYC in the summer.

@GearUp: Not to mention HK loves their street food/cigarittes. During summer the streets just smell like crap. Though the food, sightseeing, nightlife etc is awesome. I reccomed going during the end of the year when its cold.

        • @GearUp: Summer NYC is fine. Feels like Sydney. It's the humidity in HK that gets you.

      • Swimming in a sauna hot..

    • same i can't recommend it more

I can recommend hardening up and if you get the time to travel to HK, do it. Great place, heaps to do and don't need too much time there. Also they have plenty of department stores with air conditioning and water can be bought from countless convenience stores. Obviously you're not going to be running around in the middle of the day, but as long as you pack smart and keep hydrated, you'll love it.

        hardening like a metapod?

      • I'm going for 4 days any major things you can suggest I should do?

        • +4

          Go to the peak
Eat street food and at bakeries
Go shopping (visit Shum Shui Po - there's heaps of gadgets, electronics, computer accessories/parts, etc. to be had)
          Travel around on public transport
Hong Kong Disneyland and/or Ocean Park (if you like theme parks)

          Awesome!

I was there 6 days last year in October; Suggestions:

          • Victoria Peak/Peak Tram Sightseeing
          • Hong Kong History Museum (FREE entry)
          • Department Stores and Harbour inc. Harbour Cruise (Symphony of Lights @ Night time)
          • Market Stalls (Jordan)
          • Tourist walk up and down Nathan Road

          PS:
Buy your water from convenience stores
Many road signs are in English and most people speak English quite comfortably.

You'll love it. PM me if you have any more questions.

@rawm: and the various night markets as well -e.g. ladies market

          @happychappy1:

I grew up and spent more than half my life in Hong Kong and I absolutely love Sham Shui Po! It is sadly one of the poorest districts in HK, but it has a whole heap of interesting stores selling gadgets, antiques. And it feels very Hong Kong to me, for some reason.

Also definitely try the trams (also known as 'ding ding')- a great (and cheap) way to see the city

  • For Sydney…unfortunately it is after the school break.

Sydney (SYD) To Hong Kong (HKG) - $718

    Return, Economy (Getaway)
    Departing 24/07/2017,
    Returning 31/07/2017

  • What are the Virgin international crew like, compared to say the surly, snooty and inattentive Qantas offering? I would need strong convincing to not use Cathay Pacific Airways.

    • I used to fly with Virgin from SYD -> HKG (a route that they have now cancelled). The staff were friendly, but I enjoyed the food in Cathay more and I also found the seating in Cathay have slightly more legroom.

That was Virgin Atlantic. Different airlines, comparison is useless.

Oops didn't realise that. But no need to be rude :)

          @fortunecookies:
Thanks for your input fortunecookies; they are all part of the Virgin Group so your opinion is appreciated.

  • I think Qantas is doing $610

    • Via third party websites.

Always book direct unless reputable company (flight centre, sta, Webjet)

The reason they are cheaper is they use advertising revenue to lower the cost of the flight, book the flight with your and their advertising money then give you a confirmation (then adding on their own fees)

In the case of something going wrong it's a hell of a lot easier dealing with the airline direct rather than some offshore below the table travel company.

Thanks GearUp! Booked for July and I'm looking forward to the heat.
